Who do you like for Vice President ?
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 11:41 AM by The Democratic Kid
Here's my picks, 1 Bill Clinton 2 Jimmy Carter 3 John Edwards 4 John McCain. Who would be your choice to help Kerry crush Bush?

17. I like this lineup.
Kooch, Nader, or C-Mck might swing many Nader voters to our side.

I would like Howard Dean. The number two on the ticket needs to be a fighter and Dean fills the bill.

8. a long shot
Bart Peterson, mayor of Indianapolis in his second term.

Former chief-of-staff to Sen. Bayh, he's a popular Democrat in a very Republican city, in a very Republican state. Imagine how much the administration would wet itself if Indiana were in play!

Yeah, he's "just" a mayor. But he's a Midwesterner, with executive experience, and moderate without being a DINO.

Plus, if the Rove spin machine went off on the "just a mayor" riff, the Republicans' "Giuliani surprise" might not go as smoothly as they'd like!

9. ABC=ANYBODY BUT CHENEY
although i do have some personal preferences though i'm not really set on any 1 person. i like to think about how it might be with various candidates and what kerry needs to help him win. winning will mostly be based on john kerry himself, but the image and message he wants to present to the country can be helped with his vp choice.

34. Sure
Its a "secret society" at Yale - basically a glorified fraternity - mainly for students interested in public service. They do nefarious things like meet at odd hours of the night, drink large amounts of alcohol, and perform silly rituals. George Dubya and John Kerry were members at the same time (Kerry graduated two years ahead of Bush), although by all accounts they traveled in different social circles and had absolutely nothing to do with one another.

13. I don't care
As long as the VP is somebody who can step in and deal with the mess we are in, in case of emergency, which means to me someone who is extremely qualified in national security/foreign policy issues. Domestic issues will be addressed competently by any Dem administration. The reality is the world is burning and our country is at risk. Before anybody starts harping on me about Wes Clark, I'll tell you, although he fits the bill, I believe Kerry has to base his choice on many factors, so I don't advocate for any particular VP. I do advocate for one who can take over without having to look at a map of the world.

as it isn't Bayh, or Geph, I won't really mind -- I think Clark, Edwards, Graham, and Breux would give Bush a run for his money (that's the order of my preference).

21. Bill Nelson
Why Bill Nelson? Because of the Electoral College

Bush won the electoral vote 271-266 last time. Due to reapportionment, Bush would win 278-260 if he carried the same states as last time.

Which VP candidate could help swing the election?

Bush won North Carolina by a wide margin last time. I'm skeptical that having Edwards on the ticket would move the state into the Democratic column. He has moved to the left since he started running for President which hasn't exactly endeared him to Tar Heel State voters.

Bill Richardson's home state of New Mexico was carried by Gore last time, albeit by a very narrow margin. Richardson is not even halfway through his first term as Governor. His tenure as Secretary of Energy may also be an issue, with the problems that occurred at Los Alamos.

Some have argued that Richardson being a Hispanic would help the ticket. The are two problems with that argument. First, his name does not sound Hispanic. That is the reason that Loretta Sanchez switched back to her Hispanic-sounding maiden name before she ran for Congress. Secondly, Hispanics are concentrated in states that are not likely to be up for grabs. Kerry will win California and New York by wide margins regardless of who his running mate is. Bush is going to win Texas. The Hispanic voters in Florida are mostly Cuban, and tend to to trust Democrats for federal office.

It would be much more advantageous to lose NM's five electoral votes and win a large state that Bush won last time. If Kerry lost New Mexico but won Florida, he would carry the electoral vote 282-256.

How could he win Florida?

Gore's choice of Joe Lieberman energized Jewish voters in Florida. The state has been trending Republican, but the excitement of a Jewish Vice President made Florida one of the closest elections in 2000. A favorite son candidate may just what the doctor ordered to tip the scales this time.

Senator Bob Graham is pretty much openly campaigning for the nomination. He has an impressive resume (Marine Corps, state legislator, Governor, US Senator). The big problem with Senator Graham is his obsessive note taking of every mundane detail of his day. The press will have a field day with this. And you can bet your bottom dollar that someone is going to sue him for something, and try to subpoena those notebooks. There is a reason that Clinton did not use e-mail when he was President (Bush stopped using it as well when he was elected).

Senator Bill Nelson is the junior US Senator from Florida. He has been a state legislator, Congressman and State Insurance Commissioner before being elected to the Senate. He has been elected state-wide three times in the last ten years, so Florida state voters are familiar with him and are used to giving him their votes.

29. Wes Clark of course! No one else comes close IMHO.
There isn't anyone else I would be happy with or have confidence that they would help us win the election. But I will vote for and respect Kerry's choice. I just hope he is smart enough to look a gift horse in the mouth. I think he is.

I wonder how many times we are going to have to answer this question.

30. Edwards is by far the best choice
If this battle is about foreign policy, he can't pick Clark, whose supporters make so much noise on DU. Clark already videotaped the ads about why GWB and Team are his idea of stars in this area.

Battle has to be about jobs, health care, deficit, economy. That's where we win, and that's where Edwards is the perfect running mate.
(And as a member of the intelligence committee he has foreign policy credentials and experience.)

On Blitzer tonight he answered the foreign policy/military criticism of Kerry by saying that Kerry was a legitimate war hero and he trusts his credentials.

32. .
My personal faves are Clark, Edwards, or perhaps Graham if he can give us Florida.

People keep mentioning:

"Breaux, Landrieu"

McCain is more left wing than these Democrats, and I'd rather have him on the ticket than either of them.

I would love to see Kusinich/Dean Liberals and good McCain style moderates in his cabinet/admin...

Kerry will need to UNITE at least the moderates in this country- I oppose McCain as VP, but nothing wrong with picking moderates for admin positions...
