We need volunteers to help with the "Campaign Underground"
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 01:57 PM by Skinner
This year, we are trying to give our members more tools to get involved in politics. We decided that the first step would be to collect as much information as possible about politics and the media across the country. We are going to put all of this into an informational database for our visitors. BUT WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP.

We need a whole bunch of volunteers to help us collect information from each state. If you wish to help, you must first choose a state or states that you want to be in charge of. Post in this thread indicating which state you want. I will assign people to each state based on a first-come, first-served basis.

If someone signs up for a state first, you are encouraged to help out. Just contact the person assigned to that state and let them know that you want to help.

Once you are assigned to a state, you need to take the list of information below and find all the relevant information, or as much of it as you can find. Feel free to ask other DUers for help, especially if you are assigned to a large state.

The deadline to collect all this information is Monday, April 12. When you have collected all the info, we will provide you with access to the database so you can input all of the data.

Post in this thread if you have any questions.

48. Need Help?
I have a big feeling that Texas vis a vis Democratics is underrated. We need to get the word out, because all anyone hears is the Republican point of view. Any help, or organization to get the word out, is offered here.

E-mail me...

21. When you're finished, you and Leonard Cohen can take Berlin
FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I don't like your fashion business mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby ...

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I am guided

Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

143. A few links that might come in handy
This wasn't requested I understand, but it might come in handy if you're going deep into the state level.

election.dos.state.fl.us <-- you can look up campaign contributions for state officials at the Division of Elections.

I have to do a paper right now so I can't research anything other than what's off the top of my head, but hit my inbox if you need some more state-related links or if you need info on the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville, the Gainesville Sun, or the Independent Florida Alligator (University of Florida).

Let me warn you though, the FTU is a Bush parrot, so don't expect much help from them.

52. It isn't your fault
I am fed up with any criticism of Kerry no matter how fair being met with viscious personal attacks. If I am to have even an ounce of enthusiasm for politics left I need to simply vacate. I am never going to be mindless in my devotion to him and anything less than that will have my veracity and sanity questioned. That isn't your fault. Sadly though, it does kind of ruin this place for me.

80. I hope we can weed out the less serious candidates?
In North Carolina, there are six (I think) candidates for governor, and while I think most are a tad viable, some of them are just coming out of nowhere. Like the county commission of a county I've never heard of.

On the state governor question "Two-party vote in last election D/R", do you want votes *received* the the D and the R or votes *cast* by Ds and Rs? I'm guessing the first.

107. South Dakota info so far
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 11:09 PM by suegeo
In case I or my computer meet an unfortunate demise, here is the information I have on South Dakota so far.

ON EDIT:
I have stored the information that I've collected so far on a personal web page. I originally posted the location of my research in this post, but then thought the better of it. Meaning: Some rat bastard republican would likely take what I discovered so far and use it for their evil right-wing agenda.

While acknowledging my paranoid tendacies in these trying times, I would like to ask early on: Is there anywhere we can store our preliminary research, or do we need to wait until April 12, to enter ALL OF IT?

Thanks,

134. Question about Major Media
especially newspapers. There are a lot here in California. There are a lot of great papers out there in heavy populated ares which may not be considered "Major Media." Will we have room for a big list, or do you want us just to keep it to a few of the main papers out there?

I guess my question is "how much is too much?" :)

Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 06:57 AM by soup
Need a little clarification here, please. Not quite sure how to go about this.

Ah, Missouri. Who knew there was so much media? Coming across groups like this:

http://www.hereshelpnet.org/

They're everywhere, they're everywhere, run for it... :duct and cover:

How would you like these categorized? Should I track down the addresses and phone numbers individually by city, by station, or a blanket cover with just the main addresses? one for tv, one for radio?

Thanks in advance.

162. Just try to focus on mainstream, major media outlets.
Major newspapers, tv stations, etc.

We are setting up a database which will allow you to input all the info. You should categorize by individual media outlet. In other words, there will be one record for each newspaper, for each tv program, for each radio program.

167. Fax # and Radio Station Question-
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 08:15 AM by soup
It's me again. sorry.

Do you only want the radio stations that are news/talk/public radio?

Or do you want me to toss them all in - gospel/ contemporary/ religious/ country/ etc.?

thanks in advance

on edit: Most media outlets have a fax #. Will there be a spot to add those?

170. We just want radio stations that have news programs.
If they don't cover politics/public affairs, then we don't really need to put them in the database.

174. Newspaper question:
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 12:50 AM by Rationality
Are you only looking at commerical dailys and weeklys, or are you also wanting to look at alternative presses and college papers? I don't know if many local college presses will be willing to hear from us, but at least where I'm at in Gainesville FL, we have no shortage of ABB presses and perhaps we can help 'em out or do something with them.

176. Alternative presses and college papers are great.
I think we should certainly be adding them into the database.

I have been looking for websites for my reps, but almost all only appear to have a house.gov site.

Is this OK?

179. For now, we're only looking for campaign websites.
If they exist. It's hard to believe, but a lot of house candidates don't have websites.

We may add official government websites later. But for now we're just looking for the campaign sites.

186. QUESTION
I am done collecting all the information that I was able to gather for South Dakota.

Can I start entering the information now (before April 12)? Or did your original post indicate that we would begin to enter information only after April 12?

Anyway, I'm ready to go, is all.
