If Obama Is To Be Our Nominee, Then We Need To Keep Michelle Under Wraps.
Seriously. She can be a loose cannon and doesn't think before she speaks. She comes off as unstable at times and to people who aren't die hard almost blinded Obama supporters, some of her actions and words can be unsettling. I don't care a damn THING about which ends up being the nominee when it comes down to it. Battles here or not, that's just for entertainment. I think we have two awesome candidates and I'm excited about either of them running. But what I DO care about, ALL I care about, is winning in November. That's it. At the end of the day, that's all I give a fuck about. If Obama is the choice, he could thump the shit out of McCain. But if Michelle is too visible, and continues to say or do questionable things, she could SINGLE HANDEDLY lose us the election. Some think this is all fun and games, but it ain't. November may well be the most important election of our lifetimes. We can't allow that to be put at risk by someone with reckless lips, so to speak. This isn't something to take lightly. November is all that matters. Winning is all that matters. Until she learns how to be a bit more seasoned in how she handles herself, and gains control of herself a bit, I don't want her visible out there at all. I do not find her to be an asset, as it relates to the General Election. In fact, I think if there's ANYTHING that could come out of the blue and derail our chances unexpectedly, it could be something that comes from her.

That's my parting thoughts before I head to bed. We have a great shot in November. Let's hope inexperienced people with lots of visibility, don't fuck it up for us.

Multicultural, formerly married to a Repup, stellar kids.

Not everyone likes who I like but I do believe that Kerry won and not just in Ohio. It happened in all the other swing states who had Repub controlled optical scanner machines.

Though I wasn't gaga over Kerry. I was over Teresa. She is so savvy.

18. I Can Understand That. But It's Not The 95% Of Her That Matters.
I listen to her speeches and am often times inspired. I think she has some great qualities and convictions. What I'm concerned about, is the 5% of her that isn't quite refined to where it needs to be. Why am I concerned? Because in the heat of a general election, the wrong comment, whether in or out of context, at the right time, can literally sink an entire campaign. That's what I'm concerned about. November is too damn important. Now granted, for people like us here on DU, it is easy to see why she'd be well liked. But it's gonna take a HELL of a lot more than people like us to win in November, and if she says or does the wrong thing, it could destroy our chances.

And lest someone think I'm joking or being overdramatic, I'm not. Think about: If this was in the thick of the General Election, and even as a joke she said she wanted to rip McCain's eyes out while making a clawing motion, do you have any idea how quickly that would be used against us? Any idea how quickly something like that would spread like wildfire and be whored up by the media? How much damage that could do that the potential first lady said she wanted to rip the eyes out of a perceived war hero? Now granted, she didn't say that about McCain, she said it about Bill. But she could've, and has the potential to. That's my concern. Because comments like that, even as jokes, can be used as HUGE ammunition against us.

We have a tremendous shot at winning the white house. We HAVE to do this. We just HAVE to. We have to start undoing all this damage. I don't want anything reckless putting that at risk, and I'm sorry if others disagree, but I absolutely consider her comments at time to be reckless. It only takes one stellanoir... To sink our whole campaign it only takes one...

I sit here with my talons contracted feeling the very same way. I know we respectively differ about our presumptive nominee but we are united that we both don't want McCain.

That would be horrible and so retroactive.

She's a good woman and there's no reason to attack her to that degree.

I do think she might have some anger issues and some impulse stability issues, but she's still a great strong woman who overall is an incredible person. I just have some serious concerns about her bringing risk to us in the GE. But she really didn't deserve that sort of comment from you, with all due respect.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=4961844

At least, not the traditional definition of a lady.

You may have different ones.

And you can be sure that no one will attack her for not staying home baking cookies, the way they went after Hillary back in 1992. But, as even Obama-lovestruck Jonathan Alter admits: The Clintons are Velcro, Obama is Teflon.

Some of the things she says, while funny or pointed, will not play well with Joe Six-pack and could hurt Obama. It's stupid, it's not fair, but it is what it is.
I'm just saying that maybe she could be encouraged to think before she speaks until the election is over.

It isn't about us or how we'd perceive things. It's all about the machine and how others would perceive things. The wrong comment at the right time, could sink our campaign faster than you could imagine. We've seen it happen. We've seen it happen numerous times already. Personally, I don't see Barack making any huge snafus since he's proven to me he's got what it takes. But I definitely have some big concerns about Michelle.

I just hope she doesn't give them anything they can run with at a critical time. I truly do like her, and can't wait to see her as First Lady. I'm just saying I'd be cautious with her at events. We know right-leaning Indies are going to be listening to the RW media that will do whatever they can to take her out of context. We Democrats are smarter than that, and are hip to the media, the fence-sitters, maybe, maybe not.

But I just can't get past that 'I want to rip his eyes out' comment while making a clawing motion with her hand. Seems innocent enough, but in the General Election against McCain, if she were to say such a thing, it would be hyped up to levels you wouldn't believe. The outrage would be blinding I think. That's why I'm in a tizzy right now. I see risk, and I don't wanna see any risk going into November. It's just too damn important this time...

It isn't about being independent, passionate or individual. It's about saying comments off the cuff like "I want to rip his eyes out", while making clawing motions in the air.

Seems harmless enough, but things like that in the midst of the GE could be used to decimate us. We've seen it before. It could have devastating consequences. We cannot put November at risk. That's all I'm sayin.

I was just trying to say how I see her.

I have heard/seen a few of her speeches. She did not seem angry, but passionate about how she would like our country to be.

I don't think folks should be afraid to hear her out.

She also seems kind of funny (humorous) to me.

I bet she has a great personality.

32. If It Would Put Our Chances In November At Risk? ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY.
It's not the fact that she's powerful or independent that matters. It's the fact that right now, she has the capability to slip and say things that could be used against us mightily. That's a problem. Anything that brings risk to our chances in November is a problem. Do you NOT see how important winning in November is???

I do hope that they limit her time in front of the cameras, because she IS such a straight-shooter. Although, frankly, there could be absolutely nothing for the MSM to go after, and they'd create something anyway. Then the drones can go and mindlessly vote the will of the conservatives, because they were told that (fill in the blank, MSM falsehood) was such an outrage that they can only vote Republican now. It's going to be a tough fight no matter what, simply because of the Republican control of the airwaves. But yes, we don't want to just hand them juicy soundbites, either.

The comment was mis-characterized, but then again Obama's patriotism was brought into question because of a lapel pin (and that began before Michelle's comment).

I don't buy into fear over being outspoken. What Michelle said wasn't dumb, and people say dumb things all the time. Hillary has a lot of those moments.

So speak up Michelle, and this attempt to paint her as some loose cannon is bullshit!

I'm not saying this in some partisan way. There's times for games here and tit for tats, but there are also times when serious consideration is required. I'm the biggest wiseass there is and lord knows most of the time in here I'm not being serious. But there's nothing more serious to me than winning in November, REGARDLESS of who the candidate is. I see some of these comments from her every so often, and I get a pit in my stomach that if she did some of these things in the midst of the GE, that it could have dire consequences for us. That terrifies me. And it does so not because of which candidate I do or don't support, but because at the end of the day, as a country, as a world, we NEED the white house in November.

56. I Want You To Be Really Honest With Yourself For A Second:
If she said that comment and did the claw motion, in the general election and towards McCain, who is a perceived war hero by many, just how do you think the media would spin it? How much do you think they'd take it and run with it? How many voters would then end up with this bad taste in their mouths and question her? How fast could it sink our entire campaign?

Think about it. Seriously think about it. Think in the terms of the GE. Think in the terms of that comment being directed at McCain, and how that could be twisted and exaggerated by the media and talking heads to totally make us look bad. If she could so easily say it off the cuff about Bill, what would stop her from saying similar things about McCain? If she did, do you have any IDEA how heavily that could be used against us?

That's all I'm sayin, and I'm off to bed. Take your partisan blinders off for a moment and just think about it. Really think about it. Ok?

Peace.

she caused dean more problems than teresa ever did to kerry. everyone had a problem because this woman just wanted to do her thing, left every one alone, support her husband and it was a huge deal to media and others wondering what would dean do if he didnt have his wife in washington

if you would quit with the fits and think a tad about the posts without jumping up and down ranting while reading.

it doesnt matter how the woman presents herself, unless it is a stepford wife, there is problems. couldnt get better behaved than dean wife, but didnt fit the mode someone has given us for first lady

But it's gonna take more than us, who would look past such snafus, to win the GE in November.

All I can say is this:

If she would've said that rip his eyes out comment, while clawing the air, during the GE towards McCain, I think we'd sink like a rock. That's all I'm sayin.

Like I said above, it isn't about the 95%, or maybe even 99%, of her that's awesome. It's about the remaining %, the % that causes her to say reckless things at times, that is of great concern to me.

This is her first sustained time in the national spotlight and she's bound to make "mistakes," unless she behaves like Pickles. We do have to be careful that she isn't turned into a stereotype, like the "feisty yet lovable black woman next door" on a sitcom, because I can imagine the media doing it.

Q: But even the people themselves who were perpetrating that
violence, did they think it was wise? Was that wise, reasoned
action?

A: Yeah, it was wise. I mean, if black people kill black
people every day, why not have a week and kill white people? You
understand what I'm saying? In other words, white people, this
government, and that mayor were well aware of the fact that black
people were dying every day in Los Angeles under gang violence.
So if you're a gang member and you would normally be killing
somebody, why not kill a white person? Do you think that
somebody thinks that white people are better, or above and beyond
dying, when they would kill their own kind?

Oh, I don't know. I think people might enjoy hearing a first lady say what she means for once. And for those people who find Obama a bit of a stick, she might be just the thing that attracts them to him.

She is a mother, a wife and a lawyer. She has every right to freedom of speech. When Bill shuts up maybe Michelle should pull the claws in but she has every right to defend her husband until then.

87. Give me a break
Michelle has not done anything big enough to fuck up the election. She is learning the ropes as she goes along, but she will not have a Dean scream moment. If anything, Michelle will help Obama win the election, and these fears of her saying the wrong thing are way overblown. If that is your biggest concern, we will be fine.

I am more afraid of your girl Hillary saying some stuff that will hurt the Democrats chances of winning the election than Michelle.

She seems like an intelligent, outspoken and independent minded woman, similar to Hillary in many ways...

But some of her comments seems kinda nutty, like the "clawing Clinton's eyes out" thing. I found it sort of bizarre to say the least. I don't think these kind of comments would settle well with many. She'll have to a way of saying thing ummm...a bit more diplomatically...

I don't like the idea of anyone being "tamed" or "handled" but I also know that Theresa Heiz Kerry turned some off. I don't really know why. But my friend said that she was a reason his mom didn't vote for KErry. But that might have just been an excuse...

That would have been stupid then and it is stupid to say what you are saying now. HRC caused flare ups in 1992 just as Michelle has this time. The reasons is that it is beyond easy to extract the line or two from the context that explains or softens something. What this reflects is the RW has the echo chamber. No one can speak as often as these people do and not have a line or two that taken by itself look bad when twisted.

disagree with their awesomeness, but that's another matter.

And I agree that Bill is as much a loose cannon as Michelle. He may get away with more because of position, but as was anticipated when she first gave indication she might run, the relationship creates an awkwardness and he is as much of a detriment as a plus

Spouses should be seen and not heard in politics, IMO.

164. It Was An Accurate Reply. Deal With It.
You didn't disagree with my position whatsoever. In fact, you offered no rebuttal or any sign whatsoever that you comprehended the point of the OP and were intent on discussing the merits. Instead, you posted a completely empty and void of substance response of "We need another Stepford wife!!", which clearly shows that you missed the point of the OP entirely, and that you didn't even come close to showing the depth that was found in the OP. You issued a completely shallow and nonsensical statement that had little to no relevance in relation to what the OP was saying. That's just quite simply calling it like I see it, and your post stands there as proof. So your whole "belittling anyone who does not share my position" thing is really quite silly, since you didn't disagree with my position whatsoever. Instead, you completely missed the position.

Don't blame me for your inadequacies.

wants to rip Bill Clinton's eyes out, while she made a clawing motion in the air. After she got the 'eye' from one of the advisers, she said "just kidding". It was a joke on her part, but still definitely a pretty unstable thing to say. If she said something like that about McCain in the GE, it could all sorts of be catapulted to levels that could damage the hell out of us. Sometimes, she needs to stop and think before she speaks.

Really, what in the hell is happening around here? I have just checked in on this board and its ridiculous post after ridiculous post. Have we forgotten our main enemy around here? Rethugs wants us to infight. We are the party diehards and faithful and we are tearing each other apart. Some of you need slaps over the head and a good spanking. Wake up before its too late and stop being so ugly yo your fellow Dems, we are going to need each other come GE time. Or perhaps if your candidate does not win the nom you will just stay home and cry like a bunch of whiny losers. Come on people! I can't take 4 more years of Rethug rule! Bill Clinton, Michele Obama. Who cares? Are they really all that important?

Like you, all I care about is November. Some of the comments she's made already, had they been made at the right time during the GE, could've damaged us severely. That's a fact. If she continues to make these sorts of mistakes when we are in the midst of the GE battle, she could have an amazingly negative impact on our chances. That's a political fact, whether you want it to be or not. So yes, they are that important.

201. To be honest, I've made comments like hers:
"I'd like to claw so-and-so's eyes out!" - referring to sundry jerks who richly deserved it - and meant it. Didn't pretend afterward that it was just a joke. I don't consider myself unstable, just passionate, and unwilling to take crap without firing back. On the other hand, I'm not reflecting on a husband who's running for high office. While I'd never advise someone not to be themselves, not to be true to their own nature, and certainly never to be something or someone other than who they are, there's a time and a place for some restraint. Truthfully I know zilch about Michelle Obama, but she may want to calculate her words a little more carefully in the future. At least until she's in the White House, if that's how it goes. :)

227. No Seabeyond, There Are People Who Are Responding With Knee Jerk Ignorance.
Glad to see your arrogance in constantly replying for others, but I'm not interested in what YOU have to say as it relates to them.

In this case, the poster offered another parroted void of substance remark in a knee jerk fashion, that had NO relation to the substance of the OP whatsoever. It was uncreative and silly, and had nothing to do with disagreement since no disagreement was made as it relates to context and no rebuttal given. Instead, it was nothing more than a silly knee jerk comment.

So please, spare me your empty defense of others. If you're going to choose to do such a thing, maybe do it in response to a post you can, like, ya know, actually defend.

i do reply on other peoples posts, this is a message board and omc you did the same right above on one of my posts about kids. it is ok, i will not criticize you for it because this is a message board and it is what we do.

it very few words the poster gave a whole story to exactly what your op is. if you are too obtuse or too stubborn or just refuse to allow people to express their way, well then.... so be it. but many people know exactly what the poster says and how it relates and many of us are in full agreement.

and you dont get spared. if i feel the like urge, to like respond, i will like, respond, however like i want to. but like since like i have never like used like in my conversation, like..... i wonder why you feel the need to imply that is how i respond in posts.

229. They Did No Such Thing. They Missed The Point Entirely And Offered Ignorant Knee Jerk Response.
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 01:26 AM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
That's a fact. It's a sign of an ignorant and narrow mind when posts like that are made.

There was no argument nor rebuttal presented. Only and empty, void of substance, completely missing the point of the OP knee jerk statement. It wasn't disagreement, it was knee jerk ignorance.

See, let me spell it out for you: Since my OP had NOTHING to do with wanting a stepford wife, someone replying sarcastically about that, thereby saying "no, I don't want a stepford wife", is not disagreeing with the OP at all, since the OP said no such thing. Instead what they're doing, is either missing the point entirely and ignorantly replying to a point that never existed to begin with, or are purposely twisting the OP in an empty, misguided, knee jerking manner.

But since a comment of wanting a stepford wife has NOTHING to do with any argument put forth in the OP, then there was no disagreement nor substantial argument found in that reply. It was just empty headed ignorant garbage. That's a fact sister.

And you can reply however you want. I'm just advising you that when you defend an empty headed ignorant post, it in turn makes you look the same. You might want to pick a bit more wisely in the future.

230. in YOUR opinion they are ignorant, in fact it could be insightful, as i and others feel it is
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 01:44 AM by seabeyond
the argument is simple, many people feel the first lady should be made into the stepford wife. but then you know people think this because they are saying it all the way down the thread. instead of calling them all ignorant, you might wonder why so many conclude that from your op and take responsibility. i cannot belief omc, you would get every last ignorant person on du to come on YOUR thread.

now i will spell it out for you: since you feel this woman needs to be "controlled" people "feel" you are suggesting a stepford wife because that tends to be the way in a females experience.

the comment of stepford wife had everything to do with it, you refuse to acknowledge it.

and i am advising you, when a poster says something you disagree with to reduce it to ignorance or any other name calling you have chosen on this thread or your sarcasm or other manners of putting poster down that doesnt agree with you reflects on ........ you.

you and i can go back and forth on htis until the cow jumps over the moon. the reality is you and i disagree. it happens

232. Use As Many Words You Want. The Ignorance In Those Replies Is Glaring For All To See.
Sorry, but your argument carries NO merit, no matter how much passion you want to put behind it.

Let me spoonfeed you. Let me make it realllllly easy for you, ok?

Wanting someone to NOT say things like "I want to rip Bill Clinton's eyes out", while making clawing motions in the air, DOES NOT, in any way, shape, or form, equate to wanting a stepford wife. To equate it as such is ignorant on its face. It really is quite that simple, no matter how many words, put downs, or warped logic you want to use.

I'm heading to bed, so feel free to post another long ass yet completely inaccurate in concept reply about why a completely knee jerk, void of substance, not related to the OP, totally twisting it out of context, misguided and thoroughly ignorant reply about wanting a stepford wife is something that is thoughtful. I won't be responding. (though I will continue to be laughing, heartily)

And it makes them idiots if they reply with "you want her to sit in the back of the bus!!!" or some similar thoughtless, errant rubbish. There is a real issue with candidates' spouses saying stupid things (I know people who were turned off Kerry by his wife, for example, and how many threads have there been this cycle about Bill?) and when people post on autopilot like they do so often in GDP by inserting the first inflammatory non sequitor that floats to the top of the sludge in their head, then yes. They're not contributing anything and they're ignorant.
