1. Hillary Seems to be Fibbing About Her Role in the Rwandan Crisis

The RBC Update: Hilzoy on Hillary and Rwanda

Mark at Same Facts. 2008.03.08

HRC seems to be fibbing about her role in the Rwandan crisis.
No wonder Samantha Power, who literally wrote the book on that
crisis, should think of the world "monster" in describing HRC.
And no wonder HRC and her minions were so eager to keep
throwing mud at Power even after she had resigned. The truth
hurts.

2. MS Superdelegate & DNC Member Everett Sanders Endorses Obama

Mississippi Superdelegate Endorses Barack Obama

by Sam Graham-FelsenMonday, March 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Jackson, MS – Today, Mississippi Superdelegate and Democratic National Committee Member Everett Sanders endorsed Barack Obama,
citing his plan to provide affordable health care coverage to every American, improve education and his leadership on Katrina.

Mr. Sanders said, “I believe Senator Barack Obama is the best choice to lead our nation today and bring change that we can believe in here in Mississippi and across the country. He has a plan to provide affordable health care coverage to every single American and put tax cuts in the pockets of middle class families. He believes that every single child in our country deserves a world class education and has fought to make higher education more affordable in the United States Senate, increasing Pell Grants and securing better recognition for our HBCU’s and black colleges. He has a plan to help the Gulf Coast rebuild and has fought for the victims of Katrina here in Mississippi, passing legislation to investigate toxic trailers and leading the way for more funding for Katrina rebuilding. I’m proud to support Senator Obama in this campaign.”

Watch John Legend Talk About Sen. Obama on Colbert!

Student Rewind by Alex DeGolia Monday, March 10, 2008

On Thursday, John Legend was on the Colbert Report and
spoke about why he supports Senator Obama, what “Yes We Can” is all about,
and the meaning of true patriotism.

He also does a kind of duet-battle over lady liberty with Stephen Colbert.
Check it all out here.

Joyce Brayboy has endorsed Barack Obama.

The Democratic superdelegate, whose day job is as a Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist, made the decision recently.

Previously, she told Dome that she would study both candidates' electability and their stances on health care and education before making a decision.

U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield and two other superdelegates, Everett Ward and Dannie Montgomery, are also backing Obama, while Charlotte City Councilwoman Susan Burgess backs Hillary Clinton.

6. Obama Accuses Clinton of Using "Republican Tactics"

Obama Accuses Clinton of Using "Republican Tactics"

Posted by Maria Gavrilovic March 10, 2008 JACKSON, MISS. -- Barack Obama continued to go after Hillary Clinton this evening, accusing her of using “Republican tactics” against him.

“When in the midst of a campaign you decide to throw the kitchen sink at your opponent because you’re behind,” he said, “and your campaign starts leaking photographs of me when I’m traveling overseas wearing the native clothes of those folks to make people afraid, and then you run an ad talking about who’s going to answer the phone at three in the morning, an ad straight out of the Republican playbook, that’s not real change.”

...The two Democratic contenders have ramped up the rhetoric in recent weeks. Last Thursday, Clinton’s campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson accused Obama of using “Ken Starr”-type tactics, alluding to the independent counsel that led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The Clinton campaign was upset about Obama’s camp pushing reporters to ask about the Clinton’s tax returns. The Obama campaign called those allegations “absurd.”

A large crowd of mostly supporters booed whenever Obama mentioned Clinton’s name. As he often does, Obama began his criticism of Clinton by expressing his respect for her. However, despite the polite introduction, he quickly turned on her, saying that she accepts money from lobbyists, wavered on NAFTA, and is part of the status quo in Washington.

“Everybody always asks 'well, how come you haven’t already wrapped this up? Well, it’s because there are a lot of very powerful people who are doing very well under the existing system,” he said. “So they resist. They’ve got power and they’ve got money. But what we’ve got are the American people.”

7. Dodd proposes dividing Fla., Mich delegates for Obama, Clinton

Dodd proposes dividing Fla., Mich delegates for Obama, Clinton

By ANDREW MIGA | Associated Press March 10, 2008

WASHINGTON - Sen. Christopher Dodd said Monday there's a simple way to end the wrangling between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama over Florida and Michigan delegates: divide them evenly between the two Democratic presidential candidates.

"Split up the delegations, let 'em each have 50 percent of it and move on," said Dodd. "You don't have to go back over and re-do these things."

Added Dodd: "My view is make this as simple as you can."

Dodd said holding primaries again would wrongly reward the two states for trying to jump ahead of other states on the national party's primary and caucus calendar.

"There's gotta be a price you pay for this thing," Dodd said.

The Democratic National Committee have stripped Florida and Michigan of their delegates for holding their primaries too early.

Florida and Michigan had moved up their dates to protest the party's decision to allow Iowa and New Hampshire to go first, followed by South Carolina and Nevada, giving them a disproportionate influence on the presidential selection process.

8. Rwanda: "the calculated indifference of the Clinton administration.."

Clinton, Genocide and a Campaign Gaffe

Marc Cooper Huffington Post March 7, 2008

The Barack Obama campaign is about to pay a very high price for the inopportune words of one of its most distinguished foreign policy advisors. The dazzlingly brilliant journalist, Pulitzer-prize winning author, and Harvard professor, Samantha Power, has been forced to resign from the campaign after she recklessly told a reporter that Hillary Clinton is a "monster."

...Power was rightfully awarded the Pulitzer for her finely written and downright horrifying book "A Problem From Hell" which, in macabre detail, describes the calculated indifference of the Clinton administration when 800,000 Rwandans were being systematically butchered. The red phone rang and rang and rang again. I don't know where Hillary was then. But her husband and his entire experienced foreign policy team - from the brass in the Pentagon to the congenitally feckless Secretary of State Warren Christopher - just let it ring.

And as more than one researcher has amply documented the case, the bloody paralysis of the Clinton administration in the face of the Rwandan genocide owed not at all to a lack of information, but rather to a lack of will. A reviewer of Power's book for The New York Times, perhaps summed it up best, saying that the picture of Clinton that emerges from this reading is that of an "amoral narcissist."

9. ABC: The Clinton Tax Returns: What's the Holdup?

ABC: The Clinton Tax Returns: What's the Holdup?

Pressure Is High for Clinton to Release Her Tax Returns Since She Loaned Her Campaign $5 Million By AVNI PATEL March 10, 2008

After weeks of intense pressure, and more than a year after announcing her presidential candidacy, Sen. Hillary Clinton has offered little explanation for why she has delayed releasing the tax returns made public by most other Democratic presidential candidates in recent years.

"What is the holdup?" said Sheila Krumholz of the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonprofit group that tracks the role of money in politics. "She hasn't exactly made it clear as to what process is making it so cumbersome to just release them."

Past Democratic presidential candidates have set a precedent for releasing their tax returns before or during the primary season. Sen. John Kerry released his in December of 2003, and former Vice President Al Gore's were in the public domain while he was in office. Clinton's opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, released his 2006 return last April.

...The lack of disclosure leaves the public with an obscure picture of how the Clintons have managed the multi-million-dollar fortune they have amassed since leaving the White House, say government watchdog groups. Personal financial disclosure filings, required by government ethics rules, only offer a broad glimpse of the Clintons' finances. Since 1999, the couple's net worth has increased from somewhere between $1.25 million and $5.7 million to between $10 million and $50 million, according to filings. In 2006, the Clintons earned hundreds of thousands of dollars from book royalties, and former President Bill Clinton made $10 million in dozens of paid speeches.

'3am' ad star backs Obama, plans counter-punch

at News.Com.AU March 11, 2008

HILLARY Clinton might be about to get a taste of her own medicine.

The resurgent Democratic presidential candidate faced a moment of mild embarrassment on the campaign trail when a young girl, who was featured in her controversial 3am telephone call advertisement, emerged as a strong Barack Obama supporter.

Now it seems the girl will have a chance to star with her idol in a new ad which returns fire at the Clinton campaign.

The television ad featured a small girl peacefully sleeping in her bed while a somber voice behind the picture argues that the future US president should have enough experience and savvy to respond to an urgent telephone call coming to the White House at 3am.

The ad suggested the call would be alerting the next president to a global catastrophe that placed the United States in peril - and that voters should ask themselves who they want to be taking that call.

12. Obama’s California Comeback

Obama’s California Comeback

The Numbers Guy. March 10, 2008, 4:43 pm

A little-noticed shift in the tally of California’s Democratic delegates may affect the primary between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton as much as the heavily hyped results last Tuesday in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island.

Sen. Clinton won primaries in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island, while Sen. Obama won the Vermont primary and appears likely to win the Texas caucus. For the day, Sen. Clinton is likely to trim fewer than 10 delegates from Sen. Obama’s lead in the race for the Democratic nomination, which by most counts stands at about 100 delegates.

But Sen. Obama may make up all that lost ground in the media counts that are the closest this race has to an official scoreboard. A California politics blogger has argued that Sen. Clinton won 36 more pledged delegates in the state than Sen. Obama, rather than the 44-delegate margin that has long been included in the news organizations’ tallies. A spokesman for the state party confirms the blogger’s numbers.

The shift, if validated once the state certifies its election results this week and the party chooses its delegates, is a reminder that the commonly reported delegate totals are mere estimates, subject to change as states finalize election results. It also highlights how a blogger with intense focus on the numbers may be faster than the established delegate counters.

...David Dayden, who blogs at the site Calitics and serves on its editorial board, wrote last week that Sen. Clinton won 203 of the state’s 370 pledged delegates — and not the commonly reported total of 207. He relied on updated vote totals from the state, based on late counts of absentee and provisional ballots. Later, when he noticed that several major news organizations still were showing Sen. Clinton with 207 delegates, he wrote a follow-up post explaining his calculation and exhorting, “I know math is hard and everything, but get out your calculators, people.”

13. Josh Marshall: About Those 'Caucus' Delegates

About Those 'Caucus' Delegates

--Josh Marshall 03.10.08

Before New York State politics was turned upside down and shaken all around today, we had noted that Hillary Clinton had hinted at the possibility of trying to woo Barack Obama's pledged delegates over to her side. She also trotted out the neologism or seldom phrased "caucus delegates" in order to contrast to "pledged delegates." But an old pal of mine gave me a call today that gave me an idea of something else that may be afoot here.

"Caucus delegates" are different from primary delegates. But not quite in the sense that people are saying. Not in the sense that they're any less legit or meaningful than those produced by primaries. But they are less fixed.

Here's what I mean. Caucuses rarely if at all vote directly for national convention delegates (I'm going to hedge here a bit because I don't know the ins and outs of every states rules.) Generally speaking, they choose delegates to a state convention, which in turn chooses delegates to the national convention. In some states I think there are even intervening county conventions. But the key point is that unlike in primaries where the delegates really get picked on primary night, that's not what happens with caucuses. When you have a caucus in state such-and-such and they say Obama got X number of delegates, that's just an estimate. He doesn't really have them yet. What it really means is that he got X number of delegates and if they all go to the state convention and vote for Obama then he'll get the estimated number of delegates, or something very close to that number.

16. Hillary's Bad Boys Redux

Hillary's Bad Boys Redux

By amber - March 11, 2008

With the Elliot Spitzer news, I thought I'd re-post this from last month because there is somewhat of a pattern
in the types of men Hillary has backing her.
There must be some type of psychological condition that brings her
to them after the humiliation and trauma that Bill put her (and Democrats) through.
I'm angry with Spitzer sort of the way I was with Bill, and I'm betting she is too, but remains strangely drawn to them

If NOW was serious about making a difference for women, they would hit their beloved Hillary Clinton
with taking support from disgusting misogynists like Henry Cisneros and Antonio Villaraigosa

who hurt the Democratic Party in California and Texas the same way Bill Clinton did with his womanizing
before and during his time in the White House. If you know the history, Cisneros's philandering ways probably had a big part in getting George W. Bush into the governor's mansion in Texas.

A dirt cloud still floats around him like Charlie Brown's pal Pig Pen as it does for Villaraigosa whose scandal
is very much alive and still somewhat fresh in L.A. Is Hillary psychologically drawn to this type of man,
or is she willing do anything and give up any principal in order to win or be thought of as the "first Latina President?"

18. LEADERSHIP IS OBAMA'S BEST QUALITY... (great read)
WASHINGTON -- Did I miss something? I thought we, the American people, wanted something different in a presidential candidate this time. Someone civil, decent, cultured. An intelligent moderate and not someone who swaggered around like a hound dog in heat. A man or woman who would do us proud on the world stage.

That was the way it was presented to us when the campaign started a year or so ago, but now that higher version of ourselves seems to be falling to vulgar bits. After initial defeats to the elegant Obama, the angry Hillary has bounded back with an almost savage energy, and we, the American people, were impressed enough with her "toughness" to give her three state primary victories in a row, not knowing what that quality would really represent in a president.

Obama was "unprepared" to be commander in chief of the United States, the tough and commanding Hillary declared. Obama was unprepared for the crisis of the nuclear call at 3 a.m., her ads did more than insinuate. Obama's advisers even began publicly advising him to "change his tone" and to "fight back," lest he lose the lower ground to which she had so deliberately carried the discussion.

He rightly answered: "The question is not about picking up the phone. The question is what kind of judgment will you make when you answer?" To which the always impressive Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, Democrat of West Virginia, commented, "What matters most in the Oval Office is sound judgment and decisive action. It's about getting it right on crucial national security questions the first time -- and every time."

19. NY Times: The Red Phone in Black and White (racism)

The Red Phone in Black and White

By ORLANDO PATTERSON New York Times March 11, 2008

ON first watching Hillary Clinton’s recent “It’s 3 a.m.” advertisement, I was left with an uneasy feeling that something was not quite right — something that went beyond my disappointment that she had decided to go negative. Repeated watching of the ad on YouTube increased my unease. I realized that I had only too often in my study of America’s racial history seen images much like these, and the sentiments to which they allude.

...I have spent my life studying the pictures and symbols of racism and slavery, and when I saw the Clinton ad’s central image — innocent sleeping children and a mother in the middle of the night at risk of mortal danger — it brought to my mind scenes from the past. I couldn’t help but think of D. W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation,” the racist movie epic that helped revive the Ku Klux Klan, with its portrayal of black men lurking in the bushes around white society. The danger implicit in the phone ad — as I see it — is that the person answering the phone might be a black man, someone who could not be trusted to protect us from this threat.

The ad could easily have removed its racist sub-message by including images of a black child, mother or father — or by stating that the danger was external terrorism. Two other sleeping children, presumably in another bed, are not blond, but they are dimly lighted, leaving them ambiguous. Still it is obvious that they are not black — both, in fact, seem vaguely Latino.

Finally, Hillary Clinton appears, wearing a business suit at 3 a.m., answering the phone. The message: our loved ones are in grave danger and only Mrs. Clinton can save them. An Obama presidency would be dangerous — and not just because of his lack of experience. In my reading, the ad, in the insidious language of symbolism, says that Mr. Obama is himself the danger, the outsider within.

21. Spitzer Scandal Worries Clinton Camp
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 09:54 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted

HER GOVERNOR'S IN TROUBLE, BUT CLINTON'S NOT TALKING

John Nichols. The Nation. 03/11/2008
...The governor of her state -- who also happens to be one of her highest-profile backers -- is in trouble, big trouble.

But Hillary Clinton donesn't want to go there.

...Spitzer, who earned a national reputation as a crime buster, was busy apologizing Monday after having been linked--via a federal investigation--to a prostitution ring. The governor reportedly reportedly paid $4,300 to spend the night before Valentine's Day with a young lady at Washington's swank Mayflower Hotel.

...

The Clinton campaign immediately began sponging Spitzer's name from the Senator's campaign website--just as Idaho Senator Larry Craig's name disappeared from the website of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney after Craig's bathroom troubles in Minneapolis.

...
Clinton will be answering breathless questions about all her governor's troubles, about whether he should resign and, of course, about her impressions of what it means when prominent political players -- like governors or, say, presidents in the 1990s -- get wrapped up in sex scandals.

Double ouch!

The one bright side for Clinton is this: If Spitzer quits, Paterson will be the first African-American governor of New York state. He will instantly become Clinton's most prominent African-American backer.

22. Is the Clinton Team Stark Raving Mad?

Is the Clinton Team Stark Raving Mad?

Pam Spaulding, Pandagon March 11, 2008

And the latest misfire - Geraldine Ferraro, 1984 VP nominee, claiming Obama has only gotten as far as he has because he is black.

...In any case, using this particular line of thinking…

* If Clinton were a black man, Hillary would have been told to drop out of the race after losing 11 contests in a row, after all, John Edwards had to get out after losing only 3.

* If Obama were white, as it has already been noted elsewhere, he’d already be the nominee, because it’s pretty clear that while there are blacks voting for him because of his race, there are certain demographic groups who didn’t vote for him because he’s black, and those are the Reagan Democrats that Hillary is chasing.

In any case, since he’s biracial, does that factor into Ferraro’s deluded thinking? What would happen, for instance, if Obama were not visibly identifiable as black (as in, he could pass), but identified as such — does that make any difference in perceived advantage? It’s crazy-making.

Foreign policy adviser Susan Rice on MSNBC says the Clinton supporter’s recent comments about Obama’s race are “outrageous and offensive.”

Earlier: Former VP candidate Ferarro says, “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position… He happens to be very lucky to be who he is.”

"Fifty-nine percent of Hillary Clinton supporters favor a quick decision to form a "dream ticket" with both Clinton and Barack Obama, while a majority of Obama supporters oppose the idea and would rather the campaign for the nomination continue."

Makes one wonder why this is so . . . for only half a second or so . . . and then the kicker . . .

"One possible reason Clinton supporters are more likely than Obama supporters to favor negotiating a joint ticket now is that Clinton supporters may be more worried that she will lose if the campaigning continues. ... ( experts believe Clinton will have difficulty erasing lead if the primaries and caucuses remain close contests.)"

More Obama supporters, Gallup continues, feel he will ultimately win the nomination than HRC supporters, 83% to 71%.

This survey is, of course, a "snapshot" of feelings and ideas, which as we all know is quite fluid. The underlying sentiment is that Obama supporters feel our candidate "benefits the most" by a protracted campaign, whereas HRC supporters feel we need to get this thing wrapped up ASAP.

So, fellow Obama fans . . . patience and persistence are in order .

27. What's with Moderate to light turn out in Mississippi???
I've enjoyed hearing "record turn out" in most contests this year. Even "moderate" is a big let down. What gives? All the Clinton supporters staying home? McCain already done so no Repubs are showing up???

37. Most Mississippi Counties Will Vote on Diebold Touch Screens
From John Gideon's Daily News Mar 10, 2008

Tomorrow is Mississippi voters opportunity to cast a primary vote.
Most of the counties use Diebold/Premier TSx machines with a vvpat.

One county recently decided to remove the vvpat printers because they were
too much problem on election day. Another good reason to scrap DREs;
even when they have a vvpat printer.

Obama beats Clinton in Mississippi

Tue Mar 11, 2008 By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama easily beat rival Hillary Clinton in Mississippi on Tuesday, giving him new momentum in their heated presidential fight as they head into a critical showdown in Pennsylvania in six weeks.

Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, rode a wave of heavy black support to victory and extended his lead over Clinton in pledged delegates to the August nominating convention. The Illinois senator also won on Saturday in Wyoming.

Clinton revived her hopes in the Democratic race last week by besting Obama in primaries in Ohio and Texas, prolonging their bitter Democratic fight for the right to face Republican John McCain in November's presidential election.

Both candidates visited Pennsylvania on Tuesday, looking ahead to its April 22 contest that has 158 delegates at stake -- the biggest single-state haul remaining in the race.
