Would you like to hear what's really going on with Wright-Gate and why it helps Obama?
There is so much drama around this issue on all sides that we are losing all perspective. Everyone is - in camp Clinton and camp Obama alike. If we all could just take sixty seconds to take in several slow, deep breaths through the nose and slowly exhale out through the mouth.

Great. Now - let's do some political analysis like mature grown-ups, shall we? What I want to focus on is how the Wright thing effects the Obama campaign, and why its actually a positive for them. But first, I need to say this:

If you expect me, a long time radical leftist and well educated in American political history, to reject the content of Wrights statements (those that I have seen in the media to date) you're crazy. The same content has come from Chomsky, Chalmers Johnson, Howard Zinn and other brilliant radicals who additionally provide mountains of documentation, references, scholarly research and other historical evidence to substantiate their facts.

The problem for Obama is that Wright's delivery overshadows the content itself. And unfortunately, the real issue isn't about whether the specific statements are true or false / fair or unfair. The issue is that it creates a political perception problem. Obama has no "real" problem. But politics isn't reality-based. Obama has a perception problem thanks to the inflammatory style of Wrights rhetoric.

A quick one-paragraph side-note: The sad thing here is that I view statements by Ferraro as far, far worse than anything said by Wright. But that's not going to get any traction anywhere because he comes off far more un-hinged while speaking. So Ferraro basically gets away with worse behavior that was right in the middle and heart of the campaign, while months old comments already repudiated by a retiring preacher with no significant campaign role are dominating the news.

Now, the question is: How does the Wright perception problem really effect the Obama campaign?

The answer is, inside the Obama War Room they should be high-fiving themselves celebrating the fact that they have just been handed a huge, huge blessing. Sound strange? Consider this:

These Wright videos were going to come out at some point, and they were going to be used by Obama's enemies to manufacture a guilt-by-association perception problem. Unfortunately for the GOP, somebody pulled the trigger too soon (namely Sean Hannity). I would really like to give credit and link to another DUer thread which pointed out that the GOP wanted to save this for the general election, and was very unhappy that this story was being played out now in March. Thanks to the timing of this story, it breaks far, far too early to do the kind of damage the GOP would want it to do. Think about it:

Kerry's Swiftboating happened in August, leaving him very little time to do much about it before the Election. He should have done more, but still it happened right at the home stretch of the campaign race.

The American public have an incredibly short political attention span. By breaking this in March, and by having Obama immediately getting control of the story, it peaks way too early. Will GOP 527s try to use it in the general. Of course they will, which means if you know they are already going to do that, this is what you want to happen. You want all the shock and sensationalism dumped into the media as early as possible, giving you all the time in the world to dismiss it and downplay it. Obama has seven months between the breaking of this smear campaign against him and the general - and the one thing every poll consistently tells us - whether some like it or not - is that the more people hear Obama, the more they like him.

-- Even Clinton has to be disappointed with the timing. It happened too early. It helped detract away from the actual racism of Ferraro's multiple comments, but other than that - it was not close enough to the Pennsylvania Primary to be very effective.

Basically, Hannity and others stole all the GOP's thunder. People keep thinking that somehow Clinton's attacks on Obama are helping the GOP. They are not. It's not like the GOP are getting ideas from Clinton that they wouldn't have had other wise.

But instead, every single one of the GOPS best hits against Obama are being fired way too early When Obama gets hit with everything including the Kitchen Sink in March, and goes on to win the nomination anyway, the GOP is left with nothing sensational and a feeling of "well, now what?". It is so much better to get a preview of what they would have wanted to "shock" America with in August RIGHT NOW and respond to it and move on. It's one of the best gifts Obama could hope for.

Try to keep this in mind over the next few weeks.

Of course, since you responded 60 seconds after I posed, you probably didn't ready it anyway, so no biggie.

in vain in the church "God damn the USA"? Believe me this isn't going to play good in those red states Obama was supposed to carry. He ain't got a snowballs chance in hell of carrying any Bible belt state in the GE now, I'm afraid you're just whistling past the grave yard if you think this is good.

13. lol um... huh?
Pray to God to damn something isn't taking God's name in vain. My father is a pastor, and I grew up in the Red state bible belt churches you are pretending to know. That's not what taking God's name in vain is. That won't be why it won't play well.

And Obama wasn't going to carry bible belt red states in the first place.

is praying to God to damn himself, his own congregation, and you or is it just us rich white people? Oh, and Obama wasn't going to carry the red states in the first place, well excuse me, I thought that was his strong point that he could carry the Red states and Hillary couldn't.

On edit: I was taught that GD was using the lords name in vain. So now I can just substitute GD for every other word when I talk since I am not really using it in vain. Similar to the people that use the f word or mf every time they open their mouth.

15. This plays better in the bible belt, I would say
The Jeremiad is a style of sermon popular there reminiscent of the old rants of the prophets against Israel. If you have had a religious education and spent some time in church, it strikes a chord of truth, whether the message is welcome or not. The "Left Behind" teachings of Le Hay have a closely related philosophy.

is still politically sleeping until November. Fast forward to the 527 ad being aired to an unseeming public. No amount of vetting this thing right now is going to take the sting out of Rev. Wrong's crazy antics behind the pulpit. In the GE this will be considered shocking to say the least.

Keep that optimistic attitude, it looks great on you. I'm hoping this works out because, should Obama be our nominee, we don't want to lose to McCain.

9. That's not accurate this year
There is more political attention this year, across all sectors, than any election year in recent memory. The more time you have with a story the more you can manage it. No one wants something like this to break against an opponent this early. TRUST ME. It helps tremendously.

Same is true with McCains fooling around with a Lobbyst story - that it came out so early was a complete GIFT from the so-called "liberal" NYT. A poster above me made that point.

What's more, McCain will have trouble attacking Obama for crazy comments of former pastors. Trotting out Falwell, Robertson and his most recent nutcase will be a pure delight.

23. It's all about framing. Framing is politics.
They will run ads around this in October. And ads about drug use or him being a Muslim, or terrorist, or whatever else. If it was Hillary it would be all the old Clinton attacks - which is my point exactly, they are OLD attacks. They don't carry as much sting when they aren't "breaking news" and once your political team has had a chance to frame the issue. Almost all political attacks have a limited life-span where they are really effective. After that, everyone's "heard them" and they lose interest.

So having seven months to frame the issue, and seven months to prepare your counter-offensive totally takes the biggest bite out of these sort of smears.

Democrats are going into the White House. The Economy, sad to say for the millions who will be effected, will pretty much guarantee that - short of an "allowed" terrorist attack on the US to try and scare people back into voting for a Bush Third Term via McCain.

Right now the MSM has time on their hands--what to do for all that time before PA?

And Obama isn't on the campaign trail and is rested and readily available for spots--like the first one on Countdown tonight. He'll probably do several more over the next few days. Everybody wants a piece of the story. It could well be all resolved by the beginning of next week.

The usual "Group X can't march" and then counter-protests by Group X...

If they can get any footage of Spitzer walking out with a cardboard box, that would be visually interesting. I imagine if there's a public swearing in of his successor that will make a good shot, too. But without images, that story is done, pretty much.

No one will care about what a pastor said in a sermon. Bear Stearns is on the brink of extinction. Gas will be $4 a gallon by August. Food prices are soaring, and the stimulus is a joke.

won't let this die. These videos have likely scared the shit out of some higher ups in the MSM and Corporate America. Problem is, this could become really nasty for the MSM...there WILL be backlash if Obama is taken down because of this and somehow doesn't get the nomination. Every Black person in America will feel like Barack Obama was shafted from the nomination...and the worse part...because of something having to do with race. Think Jena 6, think Duke Lacrosse story...if Blacks feel like the nomination was taken from Obama due to racial reasons...there WILL BE CHAOS! You can bet your ass on that.

58. That's actually the ultimate remedy. There is only guilt by association. Which will fade quickly..

54. I'm Still Not Sure He Can Get Anywhere Close To Being The Nominee Anymore.
He carries with him a HUGE risk now. It's one of those impacts we won't truly know for sure UNTIL the GE, and there are going to be many SD's and voters contemplating if his positives can still outweigh this recently acquired huge risk.

"Obama use to smoke!" in the GE. rezko and Wright are played out now and gerry ferraro peaked way too soon..too bad the kindergartengate was already a blowback for 'em 'cause they could hang on that hope.

Wouldn't it be nice if hilary had to start cleaning her own house instead of endless hand wringing about Obama's?
