Obama claims Iowa gains


Iowa's county conventions were today, and they were expected to be the site of a scramble for supporters of Edwards and other candidates who left the race.

I've been getting emails all day from Iowans at conventions who say that the bulk of these free agents have broken Obama's way, and in a conference call with reporters, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe claimed that Obama has gained at least 5 national delegates.

With three of the state's 45 delegates still unallocated, he said, Obama stands at 21, Clinton at 14. On caucus day, the numbers were Obama 16, Clinton 15.

The numbers aren't final yet, of course.

But (aside from the substantial delegate gain) what does it mean?

The Obama campaign was spinning it as an indicator of where voters are going: "We did very well in the blue collar areas," said Plouffe, who said Obama had vaulted from third to first in Wapello County.

But these aren't voters -- they're activists. And I think it's probably a better indicator of where Democratic elites -- read superdelegates -- are heading, than where voters are. And it seems to suggest that, at least in Iowa, Clinton's attacks -- which are clearly having an effect in the polls and with voters -- are hurting her more than they're hurting him with the activists.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Democrat Barack Obama expanded his fragile lead in delegates over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday, picking up at least seven delegates as Iowa activists took the next step in picking delegates to the national convention.

Half the 14 delegates allocated to John Edwards on the basis of caucus night projections switched Saturday and Obama got most, if not all, of them.

Iowa Democratic Party officials said that with more than 86 percent of the delegates picked, Obama claimed 52 percent of the delegates elected at county conventions on Saturday, compared to 32 percent for Clinton. About 16 percent of the delegates picked at Saturday's conventions were sticking with Edwards, even though he's dropped from the race since Iowa held its caucuses in January.

Democratic Party projections said the results mean Obama increased by seven the number of delegates he collects from the state, getting a total of 23 compared to 14 for Clinton and seven for Edwards, with one to be decided.

"Do you mean "are hurting her" in the last sentence? It doesn't seem to follow from your analysis.......If this race actually were close, rather than 150 delegates apart, Dems could possibly go to the convention unsure of who had more delegates, I think."

She had picked up 5 due to some very late final counts in those states, which supposedly wiped away Obama's gains in Mississippi.

If this report is true then Hillary's gains have been wiped out.

I am assuming from your avatar that you're Jewish. How many sermons have you heard from your rabbi about what's good for the 'Jewish people' and how we need to take care of our own? Maybe not? What's the difference in what Wright is saying? Perhaps it's his style that's objectionable to you. I bet that if someone were to sit down and have an open discussion with Wright, that he has well thought out explanations of those sermons. I agree with most of what he said. I don't agree with his statements about AIDS though.
