Obama claims Iowa gains - New AP article - Obama expands delegate lead over Clinton
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 06:42 PM by Pirate Smile

Obama claims Iowa gains

Iowa's county conventions were today, and they were expected to be the site of a scramble for supporters of Edwards and other candidates who left the race.

I've been getting emails all day from Iowans at conventions who say that the bulk of these free agents have broken Obama's way, and in a conference call with reporters, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe claimed that Obama has gained at least 5 national delegates.

With three of the state's 45 delegates still unallocated, he said, Obama stands at 21, Clinton at 14. On caucus day, the numbers were Obama 16, Clinton 15.

The numbers aren't final yet, of course.

But (aside from the substantial delegate gain) what does it mean?

The Obama campaign was spinning it as an indicator of where voters are going: "We did very well in the blue collar areas," said Plouffe, who said Obama had vaulted from third to first in Wapello County.

But these aren't voters -- they're activists. And I think it's probably a better indicator of where Democratic elites -- read superdelegates -- are heading, than where voters are. And it seems to suggest that, at least in Iowa, Clinton's attacks -- which are clearly having an effect in the polls and with voters -- are hurting her more than they're hurting him with the activists.

edit to add from The Page:

In evening conference call, Obama camp claims they’ve won 23 of the 45 pledged delegates at stake — a net gain of 7 since caucuses in early January — while Clinton has lost 1 at 14.

New AP article is up:

Obama expands delegate lead over Clinton

DES MOINES, Iowa - Democrat Barack Obama expanded his fragile lead in delegates over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday, picking up at least seven delegates as Iowa activists took the next step in picking delegates to the national convention.

Half the 14 delegates allocated to John Edwards on the basis of caucus night projections switched Saturday and Obama got most, if not all, of them.

Iowa Democratic Party officials said that with more than 86 percent of the delegates picked, Obama claimed 52 percent of the delegates elected at county conventions on Saturday, compared to 32 percent for Clinton. About 16 percent of the delegates picked at Saturday's conventions were sticking with Edwards, even though he's dropped from the race since Iowa held its caucuses in January.

Democratic Party projections said the results mean Obama increased by seven the number of delegates he collects from the state, getting a total of 23 compared to 14 for Clinton and seven for Edwards, with one to be decided.

23. I know you will hate me, but I just have to say it.
You are incredibly hostile.

This is good news for your guy. Why not just say "YAY"?

I know that I have now set myself up for your scorn and derision. And I am quite familiar with your skills at writing, which are far superior to mine.

6. This was my question, too, from a reply on the blog..
"Do you mean "are hurting her" in the last sentence? It doesn't seem to follow from your analysis.......If this race actually were close, rather than 150 delegates apart, Dems could possibly go to the convention unsure of who had more delegates, I think."

10. They mixed up "her" and "him" in the last sentence, I'll bet. Because it makes
no sense in its context.

8. If true that would wipe out Hillary's late gains in NY and Colorado
She had picked up 5 due to some very late final counts in those states, which supposedly wiped away Obama's gains in Mississippi.

If this report is true then Hillary's gains have been wiped out.

12. he can gain whatever, come next week and people come
forward with tapes showing obama in attendance when this pastor spake anti america blame, anti-white, anti-jew, anti israel then obama will again be caught in another lie.....how many lies will he be given? I say if obama and the whoremedia give him a pass on this and he wins the nomination, I would say that 20% pf hrc supporters might vote for him in November....

now aren't you happy hrc stayed in the race if this crap really turns nasty, and since the right always say they would rather run against hrc, then I am sure they, the gop and the rnc are researching to catch obama in this lie, and run with it.....obama will be show signs all next week of faltering and soon will have to make a decision......

25. I think you need not hang a star on your argument about pastorgate
I am assuming from your avatar that you're Jewish. How many sermons have you heard from your rabbi about what's good for the 'Jewish people' and how we need to take care of our own? Maybe not? What's the difference in what Wright is saying? Perhaps it's his style that's objectionable to you. I bet that if someone were to sit down and have an open discussion with Wright, that he has well thought out explanations of those sermons. I agree with most of what he said. I don't agree with his statements about AIDS though.

What other of the things he brought up in those sermons do you not agree with?

so far, that's the only thing the Rev. Wright railed against that Obama picked up on. He is not anig-America, anti-white, anti-Jew, anti-Israel.

Palestinians? You have to admitt that the semitic fight between the Israelis and the Palestinians are one-sided in that the Palestinians have no prayer in hell of winning. There are Israeli's that are racist against Obama. It's not a surprise. Both sides are wrong in this fight.

First of all party conventions are for selecting pledged delegates. Secondly, I like the way you spin Delegate gainsd for Obama's as positive evidence for Clinton. Keep that up for a couple of months more and this thing will be over.

33. Sooo, net net is +8 for Obama, yes?
He went up 7, she went down 1. That gap just gets wider every week. So, just like in Feb. Obama will end up with a net gain in delegates for March, too (contrary to Hillary's claim that March would be good for them and contrary to her supporters' delusions).
