Are there any other "ticking time bombs" for Obama?
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 11:59 AM by Bread and Circus
Offhand, here's the things I can think of that have been pursued (probably as much or more by the RW media than by Hillary Clinton's campaign alone):

NAFTA-gate
Flag Lapel Pin-gate
Pledge of Allegience-gate
First time in my life "proud of America"-gate
Fiery Black Preacher-gate
REZKO-gate
"Monster"-gate

________________________________________________________________________

K Gardner (see below) has these to add:

MadrassaGate
Koran Gate
Lied About His Mom Being Single Gate
Grandmother in a Hut Gate
SnubGate
HandshakeGate
Looked Down His Nose at HillaryGate
Plagiarism Gate
Just Words Gate
Just A Speech Gate
Empty Suit Gate
"You're Likeable Enough" Uppity Man Gate
Not Over the Threshold Gate
3 am Phone Gate
Farrakhan Gate

Props to K

__________________________________________________________________________

Of all these, the two that seem to present the most political danger are Fiery Black Preacher-gate and REZKO-gate (all three). It seems as if the first has been a fire put out basically by two things: 1.) Obama condemned the statements that were controversial 2.) Clinton and especially McCain both have their fair share of ardent supporters who say controversial things. As to Rezko, this has been mostly flamed by the Chi-Tri and Obama sat with them and answered ALL of their questions in a Q and A between him and 36 reporters. It seems as if two things came out of this: 1.) There was nothing really damning 2.) Obama got an "A" for full disclosure for the Chi-Tri that even they say he met a standard that few politicians meet.

Obama is doing right by going with a "full disclosure policy": addressing all the "gates", revealing all of his relevant tax records, disclosing all of his senate earmarks.

In short, he is "walking the walk, and talking the talk" of transparency and honesty in government.

This is rare.

In my mind, I always knew the Wright comments would be visited, though I thought they'd be saved for October.

So, now that's out is there anything else that's waiting to explode? Because I'm getting awefully comfortable with Obama as my President and I'd hate to be in for a rude awakening.

It wasnt the pledge of alliegiance it was the national anthem (you are as bad as the papers). Also she didnt say it was the first time in her life, she said (when asked about politics) "the first time in my adult life Ive been really proud" which for anyone that has kids has a specific meaning.

7. I've heard it both ways and some of the emails that circulate state...
"he won't say the pledge of allegiance". Which is patently false, as we know.

I'm a big supporter of Obama btw, and one of my co-workers is interested in him but unfortunately she's not a "politico" and she has been mislead by the emails. Her concerns were these:

1.) Is he a muslim
2.) Does he not say the pledge of allegience?
3.) Does his church not accept white people? (the fact that he goes to church didn't seem to affect her insight into what the answer to #1 might be, which is odd to me).

Nonetheless, my co-worker is a Dem and a good person. She just feels like she "doesn't know what to believe". I tried to dispel the myths for her but I have to say to Rove and Penn, "Good job for kicking sand in the eyes of a fellow American, you just killed a little piece of democracy. I hope you are proud of yourselves for being such worthless assholes."

one of Wright's sermons while he says stuff about whitey. I don't know about that--could be rumor, could be manufactured. Not sure it matters anyway.

all we've seen so far is a couple of very small and insignificant fire crackers the hill camp has tried to spin into bombs but America isn't buying the bush / clinton swifboat political bullshit anymore.

6. There's no way to know. I'm an Obama supporter, but in all fairness,
that's what Hillary meant when she said "completely vetted". She HAS been under the scrutiny magnifying glass for a lot of years, and Barack has not been. I'm positive the Pubbies will dig hard until they either find some other things or make some up! Remember the photoshopped pic of Kerry on the stage with Jane Fonda at an anti war protest?

11. You don't think the 12 month campaign in 1999, the 8 years in the WH
her campaign for Senator in NY and term in the Senate have all been times that the Pubs have been hunting things to bring her down?

13. Sure. But since they'd LONG planned and hoped that she'd be the nominee this year, why
would they pull any dirt out on her before this summer? You seem to think that just because you haven't heard anything new, then there isn't anything there. She's fighting Obama now, and he certainly isn't the GOP, and he won't destroy her. But the GOP can't wait.

23. I don't disagree with that, but I also think you san say the same thing
about BOTH Dem candidates. I can honestly say I didn't know anything about Rezco or Rev. Wright two months ago. I'm a firm believer that anyone who rises to the level neccessary to even THINK about running for POTUS has had encounters, interactions, and friendships with some pretty unsavory charachters. It's just the nature of life. Maybe NONE of those people had any real influence on the candidate, but the opposition can sure make it look like it did!

Bottom line is we should not be making a decision on who we vote for because "there MIGHT BE something that hasn't been uncovered".

18. You don't think that the 40,000,000 the Clinton's made 2000 to 2006 might raise some Questions?
You don't think Bill still might have a hankering for sleeping around?

You don't think folks lik Hsu, Guistra, et al might be brought up?

There's A LOT that has yet to be investigated.

a shitload of scandals in the past doesn't mean she or Bill have been perfect angels in the last few years, sorry.

are the bedrock of any democracy.

I'm a firm supporter of the Second Amendment although I think people take a lot of latitude in interpreting it to mean whatever they want it to mean.

Obama opens up on Rezko, and it's almost believable
John Kass
March 16, 2008
Barack Obama looked me straight in the eye. I heard him speak. Yet unlike some other pundits, I felt no thrill going up my leg.

I did feel a twinge of Rezko, though, and figured Obama could feel it, too, like when the bottom of your foot cramps up inside your shoe and you can't dance.

That's "hardball" the Chicago way, as Barack visited the Tribune on Friday to discuss his old friend, fundraiser and real estate fairy, indicted political fixer Tony Rezko. Rezko himself was quite busy, in federal custody, preparing for this week's testimony in his corruption trial.

snip

But I was focused on Obama and Rezko. I wanted to believe Obama, and almost did.

Don't be so sure the Chicago Tribune has given Obama a pass. This was on their front page yesterday and they wouldn't have placed it there if they have become true believers.
