Who Will Show Support for Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago ?
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 03:48 PM by K Gardner
I have felt so helpless and heartsick over the biased and racially divisive portrayal of this magnificent church and congregation, so guilty for sitting by and doing nothing but posting on this innane board. So I went to the Trinity website today and read about their mission and their work across the nation and in their community. I signed up for their newsletter and was able to watch videos of Moss' latest sermons. And I understand now why Obama was drawn to this congregation.

Obviously, this post is not intended for those on this board who have demeaned this congregation and their former pastor. But I wanted to show support and in some small way let them know that not everyone in America believes what Fox News has to say. So I sent a small donation in honor of Jeremiah Wright and wrote a letter. It may be an insignificant token, but for those who feel as I do - that this attack is unfair - it is something.

Please do not spam this thread. If you cannot say anything supportive, please say nothing. And if you'd like to stand with me, and against the media's racially divisive portrayal, please K&R this thread. I would be happy to have support, but I will be just as happy to stand alone.

I'll support the church. If I would of grown up in it, I may of never left the church. Sounds like everything a non-hypocritical church should be about.

14. And your opinion is based on what?
Radical clerics? Do you even know the meaning of the term.

On the aftermath of 9-11, many of us spoke of blowback being responsible for that attack on our country. We later learned that Bush had been warned months before that an attack was imminent, but he did nothing.

There are those that think that 9-11 happened because they "hate us for our freedoms." Myself and others believe that 9-11 happened because of what our government is doing over there in our name.

Arguing that US action overseas invites blowback is one thing. Arguing, as radical cleric Jeremiah Wright did, that American citizens deserve to be the targets of terrorism is quite another thing... something which should be repudiated in the strongest terms.

89. I agree that innocent people should not ever be targeted, yet we have Gaza
and few Americans seem at all aware or concerned as to the human tragedy taking place there. The point is that our "outrage" at the killing of innocents is selective at best.

The best example I can cite is how this country embraced the concept that a President had the right to destroy the Earth and every living thing in it by the push of a button.

55. Wright never said that Americans deserve to be targets of terrorism
"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost"

Nowhere does he say that we deserve to be targets of terrorism. Please don't make shit up.

We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost.

Indignation is defined as strong displeasure at something considered unjust. The fact that Jeremiah Wright mocked the indignation Americans felt in response to the 9/11 attacks serves to demonstrate that he does not consider the 9/11 attacks to have been unjust. Words are important!

Jeremiah Wright is a snake in the same category as Ann Coulter.

Obama's church accuses media of character assassination

By MIKE ALLEN | 3/16/08 2:02 PM EST

Here is the full text of the statement, with the headline, “AN ATTACK ON OUR SENIOR PASTOR AND THE HISTORY OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCH”:

Chicago, Ill. (March 15, 2008) — Nearly three weeks before the 40th commemorative anniversary of the murder of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.’s character is being assassinated in the public sphere because he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe.

“Dr. Wright has preached 207,792 minutes on Sunday for the past 36 years at Trinity United Church of Christ. This does not include weekday worship services, revivals and preaching engagements across America and around the globe, to ecumenical and interfaith communities. It is an indictment on Dr. Wright’s ministerial legacy to present his global ministry within a 15- or 30-second sound bite,” said the Reverend Otis Moss III, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.

During the 36-year pastorate of Dr. Wright, Trinity United Church of Christ has grown from 87 to 8,000 members. It is the largest congregation in the United Church of Christ (UCC) denomination.

“It saddens me to see news stories reporting such a caricature of a congregation that has been such a blessing to the UCC’s Wider Church mission,” said the Rev. John H. Thomas, UCC general minister and president, in a released statement. “ … It’s time for us to say ‘No’ to these attacks and declare that we will not allow anyone to undermine or destroy the ministries of any of our congregations in order to serve their own narrow political or ideological ends.”

Trinity United Church of Christ’s ministry is inclusive and global. The following ministries have been developed under Dr. Wright’s ministerial tutelage for social justice: assisted living facilities for senior citizens, day care for children, pastoral care and counseling, health care, ministries for persons living with HIV/AIDS, hospice training, prison ministry, scholarships for thousands of students to attend historically black colleges, youth ministries, tutorial and computer programs, a church library, domestic violence programs and scholarships and fellowships for women and men attending seminary.

are not reflective of a man's life. Only those who choose to use those comments to fan the flames of racial discord would judge a human being with such a narrow view. I believe thinking human beings would need a tad more information before lynching the man.

87. How many leaps of logic did you make in that post? Five? Ten?
Do you have kids? Have they ever said something mean and wrong to another kid? Like "you're retarded" or "you're ugly"?

I assume you wouldn't just let those comments go. I assume you'd condemn the comments as being wrong and as being something you don't agree with.

But that doesn't mean you repudiate your own kids.

This church has obviously done a lot of good for the community, and Jeremiah Wright has obviously done a lot of good for the community. During his 30 years of preaching he made some stupid comments. I'm sure if you scoured any religious figure's sermons you could find stupid comments. But that doesn't mean that the church is built upon those stupid comments.

charitable work the church does and not support the pastor, as is their right. It is still a good thing to let the thousands of people in this congregation know that THEY are not painted with the same broad brush. Good point and thank you.

My brother and I are trying to get a site up at which those who think TCC does a good job can contribute a few bucks and have it delivered as a sign of support for the work the church does, regardless of what one might personally think about a few of the things Wright has said.

If we get it running I'll post a link (if that's OK? Mods, would that be seen as somehow unacceptable?)

30. Face it.
A lot of what Rev. Wright said is absolutely true--but totally inflammatory when heard the way we've been hearing it, over and over and over. I'd like to hear those sermons in full (and I'm not one who often wants to hear a sermon of any sort).

This country has horrible karma--slavery, genocide of native Americans, the atom bomb, internment of Japanese Americans, slaughter of many thousands of Iraqis. Maybe our chickens actually are coming home to roost. GWB sure isn't doing anything to make things better. And we need to be reminded of what we've done rather than sit around telling ourselves how wonderful we are.

Although I can't bring myself to believe that our government developed HIV to kill off people of color. That part I think the good reverend got wrong.

And, since I've read that Oprah sometimes attends services at Trinity, I'd love to hear her opinion of the church and the reverend and the controversy.

In the end, any candidate would have to disassociate him/herself from such statements. Just too many people who will never understand.

100. No doubt....
Samantha Powers said monster, and she was gone the next day. I guess if members of his Campaign use divisive language they are out of there. Maybe he cares about that kind of stuff. I believe he has said there is no place in politics for the kind of language Reverend Wright used in the clip that is being replayed like a broken record by the Press. But at the same time, he has said that he thinks of Reverend Wright as an Uncle who you can sometimes disagree with, but still love nonetheless. I know the Reverend is retiring, but I have no idea who Obama's Pastor is now. I suppose if it's really important to you, you could ask someone in his Campaign? Those people who are trying to hammer home the race issue, fanning the flames for some kind of a race war, will not be happy regardless of what Senator Obama says or does.

39. I will. Anyone bashing them can kiss my ass.
Thanks for the address. I'll see what I can do when I also donate to Obama this week.

I know that Obama has to deal with Rev Wright as the "crazy pastor" problem, but that's just political stuff.

Personally, I think that the people whining about this are big babies who've been coddled into a state of brainlessness. The result: a "patriotism" that gives away our industry to enrich other countries, and that wages war on other countries' behalf.

They should be offended more often.

48. I was amazed to find out that this Church was only abt two neighborhoods
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 04:47 PM by truedelphi
From where I grew up.

I rarely went over there - my school, the church I attended on Sundays, the church I attended on Mon nights for Girl Scouts, all of my world was further west than this neighborhood.

My assumption had been that the Obamas attended a church in Hyde Park near the University of Chicago.

But this area 4 blocks west of the Dan Ryan is an area that became devastatingly poor over the decades. (or at least west of there became poor) When the expressways were built in the 1960's, they were built in poorer but stable neighborhoods, almost as if a deliberate attempt was made to de-struct the decent arenas of Chicago life. These many neighborhoods were more ethnic and less "white" but they held together as communities. Eventually the migration spilled into my lilly-white neighborhood - by the time I entered high school, our neighborhood was becoming segregated, and not happily so. Neighbors who had known each other for decades no longer spoke to one another - those who were the first to sell to blacks or other people of color were considered to have betrayed the neighborhood's integrity.

My parents had not ever bought a house, and this enabled them to stay above the fray. We ended up being one of the last white families to move out - and in moving out my folks finally became home owners. Over the final years in Brainerd, my mom, who had never cared in the slightest for African Americans, became convinced that they were just like her - the fabric store where she offered sewing classes had become a hodge podge of people from many parts of the world, and she discovered that a love of fashion does not have any connection to skin color. (In her world view, if you liked to sew, you were a wonderful person.)

After we left, my neighborhood, Brainerd, became crime riddled. At one point some five, six years after we left, it held the distinction of having the highest murder rate in the city of Chicago - a sober statistic especially given that high murder rates were usually associated with the Projects.
And Brainerd held homes with back yards, and lush parks.

A house where I'd spent many afternoons in play became the site of a tragic and horrific event - a man poured gasoline across the bodies of his entire sleeping family and burned them to death.

The fact that Trinity Church sees its mission as changing the poverty, and living and working conditions of the area is so laudable that I was in tears as I watched one of the videos of the ministers addressing the Church's mission. In 1994, when my old grammar school held a re-union, my classmates talked in hushed tones about the dangers that they had faced in going back to Brainerd, circa early 1980's, and visiting the apartment building or house where they had grown up -- everything from standing down a gang of older, knife wielding teens to dealing with junkyard dogs.

51. Oh, Delphi.. thank you SO much for bringing a real, personal touch to this with your story. You
have written in very humane and realistic terms about things that most of us have seen happen in our own towns and neighborhoods over the decades, to our own families; and shown us how Trinity's mission has fought for social justice and families throughout Chicago. As I read, I can almost "see" the fabric store, with its sewing classes - the hodgepodge of people you write about mirrored in the fabrics sewn together by loving hands.

I really feel the need to visit Chicago some time in the very near future. Thank you so much for this !

57. Judging from MapQuest, my first real Af Am friend, Samantha
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 05:03 PM by truedelphi
Lived right smack a block or two from where Trinity is now. Her family owned a modest but comfy bungalow and I would visit them every couple of weeks.

She and I were file clerks in that important summer between HS and college. We made an amazing
$ 2.12 an hour - several friends of mine were quite jealous that I was making MORE than 2 bucks!

She drew the most incredibly wicked cartoons of this weird old man who also worked in the file dept -the cartoons detailed his pot belly, and how he smoked a pipe or cigar, and always seemed more asleep on his feet than a wake.

The cartoons would be like "Carol announces her engagement to MR PEASE POT!!" with hearts drawn all around the adoring Mr Pease Pot.

In reality this poor guy probably was only a month or two away from retirement and the bank was just keeping him on till he could draw his pension - I doubt he ever even noticed me or Samantha.

These cartoons circulated throughout the department, much to my embarassment. I considered them so funny that anytime I came within twelve feet of Ol' P - I would have to stifle the overwhelming urge to collapse into laughter. And if I managed to not laugh, Sam was right there, shoving a new cartoon at eye level - and then I would lose it and start giggling hysterically.

Samantha's mom was so happy that her daughter had a white friend. Of course, I was the happiest, I would have never survived that summer if it hadn't been for my buddy and her outrageous sense of humor.

Anyone who bothers to do even a modicum of research on Trinity and Reverend Wright would never jump on this hate bandwagon whipped-up by the right-wing media and Hillary supporters. It boils down to badly-disguised racism and anti-religion bias, period. If anyone ever again says that these are not issues among liberals, I will remind them of this incident, and suggest they read the shameful posts on this board. I don't know when I have been so disgusted.

Thank you for doing it and I totally agree. The outreach services this church offer are awesome. Having worked with Head Start parents, I know very well how important support groups are for those wanting to better their life and become self-sufficient. Dr. Wright has done exactly what Jesus preached and I hold a great deal of respect for him.

I've written several media sources as well as Oprah asking them to do a piece on the good work this church does. I think most Americans would be impressed if they knew the full story.

113. Correction
The sermons are being sold by the church, the money goes to the congregation's operating expenses. Ministers are paid a salary, sermon sales do not affect it.

The UCC has taken up the always-unpopular task of welcoming the outcast, they even took out a national ad campaign to that effect. For their willingness to do this difficult and good thing, they will always have my support and gratitude.

83. I am white and have actually worshiped at this church
when I lived on the south side of Chicago for 19 years. I lived in the University of Chicago neighborhood where Obama and his family lived and I once met his wife collecting signatures for him in front of the grocery store. I belonged to a white church of the same denomination.

But living on the south side of Chicago, you are missing a lot if you never go to a black church. I had black friends who went there, and I went there a couple of times, including once on Christmas day. I don't remember being offended at all. Its like being at someone else's family reunion. You might hear a few things that are meant for the family, but how many times do black people have to sit by while whites act like they are invisible?

I saw black churches change lives and change neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago. I have the greatest respect for all of them.

96. If you are white and want to understand race
than this is what you need to do. Go to a black church and listen to it from the inside perspective. Now that I live in Wisconsin that's harder to do. But I still listen to Jesse Jackson's radio show "Keep Hope Alive" every week. I have learned so much from him and he is the part of the south side of Chicago that I take with me. He cares so much about the black community but he is not racist against whites. If you want to overcome your own racism you have to try and understand it from the black perspective.

88. It is truly amazing how the MSM will whip up an uproar over this
black church and a fiery former pastor, but ignore the Reconstructionist ties to the McCain campaign through Parsley and Hagee. Exposing Reconstructionism for the hateful, pro-slavery, anti-democracy, pro-GENOCIDE movement that it is would do this nation a great service, because the evil people in that movement have kept their agenda well hidden.

But instead we have a progressive black church being attacked as an institution of hate.

NOBODY can convince me that it's not about race. This country is sick.
