If Rethugs Ran An Ad Of Rev. Wright Clips Against Obama, Couldn't Dems Just Make One of Rod Parsley?
Edited on Mon Mar-17-08 02:59 PM by malik flavors
In the general if they made a 527 ad against Obama, couldn't we just throw one right back at them of Ron Parsley, Hagee, Falwell, or Robertson?

Wouldn't the two ads basically cancel each other out?

McCain has called Parsley his spirtual advisor, so I don't see why we couldn't counter easily against him.

1. It's the media stupid. You're not stupid, I'm just saying the media will allow all the
people who make the anti Obama ad air time to explain their views over and over again. They will keep playing the ad as a feature in their news reporting. All we'll get is our paid for ad and no discussion.

2. If we hit back with a commercial immediately, they would discuss both commercials.

3. Hopefully you are right, but, look what happened to the swift boat liars.
they got so much air time and even when Kerry challenged the facts the media kept playing the ad and interviewing the liars. It was sickening.

4. Yea, but Kerry waited too long to respond. That was his biggest mistake. We'd hit back immediately.
I think we're in a good position since McCain has his own pastor problems.

If they hit us, we hit them back just as hard and quickly. Dems are ready to respond strong this November.

5. I Know You Mean Well, But If You Put Up Anti-Muslim Rhetoric Against
white hatred, blaming 9/11 on us, claiming blacks were infected with aids purposely, and god damn america, you're gonna lose and you're gonna lose bigtime.

Let's try and keep some perspective here.

Falwell & Pat Robertson on 9/11:

JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters -- the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats -- what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact -- if, in fact -- God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.
JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well yes.
JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

Yep, the guy McCain's been kissing up to for the past 6 years or so...

10. Don't Deflect.
The issue is Rod Parsley.

If you try and put his issue up against the Obama issue, it's a losing battle right on its face. I would think one would have to be amazingly naive to think otherwise.

is Parsley on McCain's campaign committee? Has McCain sat in his church for 20 years?
And I hate to admit it.... but the kind of people who'd vote for McCain don't really get offended by the kind fo things Parsley said. The people who are offended by Parsley would NOT vote for McCain anyways.

Don't try to save BO's bacon... he's in trouble.

17. Who IS John McCain's pastor?
Anyone know? I'm sure if someone were to take the trouble to comb through all his sermons, they'd be able to find something that would be scary to Republicans (they are very easily frightened, after all).

19. I agree with you, even though I'm an Obama supporter
Stephanie Miller tried to make the equivalence this morning, and it doesn't hold true for the reasons you say, even though Stephanie is an Obama supporter like I am. I have to call them like I see them. The analogy is deeply flawed. We would have to find allegedly crazy statements by McCain's actual pastor, just like Wright was Obama's actual pastor.

23. Unfortunately this is true.
...the kind of people who'd vote for McCain don't really get offended by the kind or things Parsley said. The people who are offended by Parsley would NOT vote for McCain anyways.

This is the kind of thing white politicians and preachers have gotten away with for years and in fact, I suspect this kind of garbage may strengthen their base and even bring over borderline sympathetic voters. A fiery negro preacher spouting inflammatory rhetoric is far scarier for closet racists (you know, the ones who have black friends and deny there is still racism in the country after everything was fixed in the civil rights era) and provokes a much stronger gut reaction than the equivalent words spoken by a white preacher. This just illustrates the undeniable double-standard that still exists in this country.

In this case, the ingrained racist reaction to this footage threatens to completely overpower the record of accomplishments and years of speeches and positions the candidate has taken to the contrary. So, a handful sound bites can sway a certain susceptible fraction of the public that refuses to think for itself and forms all its opinions bases on a few spoon-fed headlines from the media.

However, since Iowa, I think that the country as a whole has shown that it is better than this and is eager and willing to move past this kind of divisiveness. I think Obama will surely weather these attacks, despite the overblown media coverage and any future 527 replays.

12. Someone will put out a GOP commercial of McCain and his preacher - and then?
he was raised in the Episcopal church, his great-grandfather was an Episcopal minister, and he graduated from an Episcopal high school. Today, however, he attends the North Phoenix Baptist Church which is part of the Southern Baptist Convention. In 2007 he described himself as Baptist rather than Episcopalian and emphasized how important being a Christian is to him. In his book Character is Destiny he says that his religious faith helped him survive his years as a POW. McCain's church's theology is that Jesus chose to die on the cross as a sacrifice to pay a penalty the rest of us owed God, even though Jesus himself led a sinless life.

The GOP's Christian Zionist wing have handed us all kinds of seriously damaging shit that we've been too nice to use against them. Until now.

such as those evil catholics.

Or use clips of all of them, but make Hagee the central theme.

16. They could also push back by compiling some of Wright's most positive and uplifting moments.
Battling negativity with positivity. Show clips of Wright talking about people needing to come together, the other side of him that we're not getting to see right now.

I'm sure wright has some wonderful sermons they could play.

Ad campaigns like that can only exacerbate things people are vaguely predisposed to believe anyway. They don't create perception, they distort and exacerbate perception.

Given his history, tarring McCain as a fundy is a non-starter.

Branding Obama, or any other fairly unknown black politician, as "agreived"... as more Al Sharpton than Morgan Freeman, has almost infinite legs. It's a widespread perception of black politicians.

Maybe they would dislike that he's balck, but I don't see why they would think he wants to kill whitey, or anything like that.

22. it's not about tarring McCain as a fundy...
It's about raising doubts about the people in his corner, and about their influence.

You put the Christian Zionist wackos together with "Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Iran", and you've got something.

Especially if the economy is in the toilet, and we're struggling to pay for the war, and independents can be FUDded into wondering about how "reasonable" McCain will be.

25. I've been saying that for a while
Short of a miracle on Hillary's behalf, Obama will be the nominee.

If McCain or the 527s run to run an ad about Wright linked to Obama, it would be political suicide. Run ads with Parsley, Hagee and other wingnuts and get McCain to alienate Catholics, women, blacks, Jews and whoever else.

If Johnny wants to bite the cheese in the trap, I welcome it.

Larry Franklin is already in prison for espionage, and more people are set to go on trial. The compromised material concerned Iran -- the country McCain was singing about bombing.
