5. Don't Hold Your Breath
Obama has run one of the most successful political cults I've seen since the Christian Coalition. Cultists cannot see any fault in their messiah. You won't get an honest answer, and besides these people are too busy preparing their posts claiming that Obama's "speech on race" is the best thing since MLK.

8. Honestly, it's his optimism...
Yes, I realize that's what sells most people on him. But it strikes me as naive and overly simplistic and I seriously doubt it will work. For the longest time I couldn't get behind him because of it. And I still have reservations about it. But when Edwards dropped out and I had to narrow it down to a comparison between his naive optimism and effort to unite all people with Clinton's slash and burn, win at all costs, all about me garbage campaign it became Obama by default.

I'm a naturally cynical and misanthropic person. My own belief is that people are by and large self interested and will screw you over in the blink of an eye if it gets them to their desired end. And if I were living in a bubble on an island, Clinton would get my vote because of that. But I have 2 young children and I don't want to impart my negativity and cynicism on to them. I want them to have the choice to either hope or to fear. And I want them to not be like me and I don't want them to grow up in a country that thinks like I do, even if the cold fact is that is what we have now.

So I cast a raised eyebrow at Obama's overly optimistic positivity filled approach for myself, but I am voting for it because of my children.

it shows that he is thinking and forming an actual thought and response. when asked a question he doesn't just spit out talking points and pieces from his stump speech. it shows that he is actually thinking about what he is saying before he speaks and trying to answer the question. it doesn't seem to happen nearly as much when he is giving a prepared speech. just my opinion.

27. "war that shouldve never been authorized, shouldve never been waged."
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 07:00 PM by goletian
too repetitive. he needs a thesaurus or something. maybe hes does it so people can remember it easily and associate him with his anti war stance, but he should try wording it differently from time to time. also, when hes speaking off the top of his head, he says "uh" way too much. i also dislike the rhythm speaks in when hes making speeches - doesnt always come out but its kind of annoying to me.

i actually dont think hes that great a speaker; he just happens to be saying the right things all the time. and, also that he didnt respond to the accusations of him being muslim with a "so what if i were??" but i suppose that wouldnt be very safe... and i, too, was bothered by the gay marriage thing but he has a good argument for his position:

http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Civil_Rights.htm#Gay_Rights

My view is that we should try to disentangle what has historically been the issue of the word "marriage," which has religious connotations to some people, from the civil rights that are given to couples, in terms of hospital visitation, in terms of whether or not they can transfer property or Social Security benefits and so forth. So it depends on how the bill would've come up. I would've supported and would continue to support a civil union that provides all the benefits that are available for a legally sanctioned marriage. And it is then, as I said, up to religious denominations to make a determination as to whether they want to recognize that as marriage or not.

39. Probably.....
because he cares too much for the poor, cares too much about this country and will carry what Democrats hold true to their hearts and the Party.

Wasn't it Hillary that stated one of her shortcommings was "caring too much for the poor" something to that effect her and Edwards spoke during a debate.

I had no idea her care for the poor was such an aggravation/shortcoming of hers?

Seriously, one thing Obama could do a little better, as far as I'm concerned is pound the vote for this war over and over again. When Democrats were screaming at computer screens, being kicked and jailed for protesting the war, when the Defense Contractors were looting the National Treasury, and we wanted a voice to say enough, her and Leiberman were more concerned with their political careers than our kids lives and well being, and "looking tough" for all the Republicans to see was Hillary's agenda the way I see it.

If I were Obama, she wouldn't get a word in edgewise without me dragging that smelly skunk up on the table to talk about.

I guess thats why Obama will be our next President, and I'll continue being an old construction worker.

44. He seems to disregard the bad attributes of people
While this is an admirable trait, his tendency to "turn the other cheek" seems a little naive. From what I have seen from Obama, I could honestly believe that he listened to Rev. Wright for all these years, and only took in the good things, while filtering out the bad. I like the idea of true bi-partisanship (not the faux bi-partisanship that the Republicans desire), but Obama has to recognize that there are some who are dead set on not working with the other side, no matter what the issue is. As long as he can recognize who those people are, and effectively marginalize them so that the job of enacting real change can be started, then I think we can look forward to a president who really will be working for us all.

52. I dislike, very much so, some of his proposed energy policies
and i've said it before. Have no idea why he supports Nuclear energy when so many renewable sources are available. same point about "cleaner" coal. Well one idea may be how much nuclear money he has in his past.

I also think until recently he hasn't shown that he knows as much as he should about the intricacies of Iraq civil strife.

Would like for him to defend himself more firmly and resolutely (kind of like he did today)

Am tired of how he recycles his speeches (don't give me that stump speech excuse either-- since Super Tuesday many lines if not entire chunks make their way into any and every context)

that said, he's my candidate for so many more reasons than this (see my profile for a quick glimpse). One of many being that he admits he's human and makes mistakes, and inasmuch is less presumptuous than any politician I've ever come across on this level.

What was the first poster predicting, not expecting many responses here? I'd LOVE to see how substantive Hillary supporters get in being as naturally critical as any conscientious citizen should be of his or her chosen candidate.

59. His lack of accomplishments in the Senate...
...and the lack of leadership in general. I hate the way he threw Rev. Wright under the bus today. He didn't need to brand certain statements divisive, or use the word "condemnation." Wright was right, more or less.

I love, however, the way he cleverly turned that around later in the speech, and showed strong support for those same ideas in a way that won't frighten most Americans.

70. His statements on religion and the Pledge of Allegiance
Particularly his statement that no children have ever felt pressured to say the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. I even wrote to him after he made that statement, detailing the hell I went through in grade school being interrogated by both students and some teachers to tell them what religion I was; as I routinely omitted the words "Under God". As I didn't believing in the existence of God, I considered it to be a lie if I left those words in.

I never even received a form letter from his campaign.
