TODAY IS THE DAY that I will not respond to negative headlined threads and elevate them.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 12:52 PM by FrenchieCat
If you feel like today was a great day for all Americans, regardless of our political views, please join me. Let the negativity sink down to where it belongs.

If there are some Americans who do not agree that we must get past our differences in a positive and uplifting way, than at least, let us try and not encourage that sentiment to keep floating to the top as though it is a prevailing sentiment.

We do not need to defend Barack Obama, because he has already spoken for himself.

Instead, we must ask ourselves how can we make the difference in the smaller scheme of things?
That is, what is it that we each can do to deliver a different tone to the conversation?

The one small thing that we can do, is to not encourage the cynics who want us to continue to be at each other's throats. They can do what they want, but we are of a larger number, and we don't have to argue with them on this day just because they don't quite get the meaning of progress and why it should be important not only to our children, but to all of us, especially Democrats.....to move beyond rationalizing why division should be encouraged.

So again, please join me in solidarity on this day...because this is our time, not theirs. :patriot:

Lemme guess, you are turning over a new leaf and from this moment on you will stop endlessly ranting about Hillary and begin talking about Obama's POLICY POSITIONS?

I will believe it when I see it...

157. Agreed.
I think FrenchieCat made a wonderful statement in this OP, and I agree with her that we should reconcile and stop perpetuating the negativity within our ranks and on this board.

However, she certainly has done her fair share of adding to the vitriol in this forum over the last several months. I believe her sentiment in this particular OP to be sincere, but one good OP doesn't negate all the negative ones.

3. Historic. Groundbreaking. Utterly breathtaking address.
We've witnessed a large bit of history today.

WE all need him in the White House.

Those who are descendants of slaves and indentured servants and those of us who are descendants of slave owners or men who made a living trading and transporting human cargo into bondage...WE ALL NEED BARACK OBAMA as Commander in Chief of these United States.

It is time.

although there are some who won't realize that till the books have been written. But maybe then, they will understand that they lacked the insightfulness needed to heal our country....and maybe from that, they will grow.

predisposed toward him.

A LANDMARK speech. MOMENTOUS. HISTORIC. He just hit it straight out of the ballpark. We HAVE TO confront these things he talked about. WE HAVE TO GROW UP AS A NATION.

Interesting to me, too, is this feeling I've gotten since watching the speech - everybody here and on camera and on radio and in print who returns to whining and yammering about isolated farts out of Pastor Wright's mouth is suddenly rendered SO YESTERDAY. So small. So piss-ant. So past-tense. So pathetic. So obsolete.

SO COMPLETELY AND LAUGHABLY YESTERDAY.

27. Thank you.......it is a pledge worth fighting the reflex that many of us have
in righting a wrong sentiment as we may see it headlined on this forum.

But in the end, it doesn't give us what we should want.....unity in spirit for a better tomorrow, regardless of who we support.

This really is our time, and we need to assert in a way that doesn't allow the doubters and the naysayers the satisfaction that they have any point to make, because today....they really don't.

16. Need some way to have negative ratings
There should be some way that people can give a negative rating to a thread to help it sink. Too many people feel a need to post arguments against horrible posts, which only makes them more visible. It is better to let them sink into oblivion. Then, we can see which desparate people try to resusitate them, and spot the trolls.

71. not at all just proud on days they can't quite figure out
South Carolina Primary made me proud. Saturday's Iowa County Convention. My neighbors know my unusual habit of raising the flag on unusual days. I usually get some friendly questions on the dog walking circuit. And none of the hostility your question implies.

And for the 12 years I worked in refugee camps helping to resettle refugees I was proud every day when I realized that generous Americans were bearing the burden of one of the most shameful uses of imperial power.

Proud just not on the same days your are chump.

Thanks for reminding me how beautiful our new First Lady is. I cannot wait until Jan 20th 2009 and yes my flag will be up once again.

31. Frenchie I do agree with your sentiment
But I posted a thread about some excerpts in Obamas memoir "Dreams from my father" because I felt they seemed to oppose what he is telling the american public and because these statements represent his ideals and beliefs. I was hoping the Obama supporters could enlighten me about Obama because I don't know very much about him.

That said, we could talk about the Clinton's all day because I have followed there life and careers ever since Bill Clinton was AG of Arkansas and because I'm originally from Arkansas.

If I am to vote for Obama in the GE I want to know more about him. I was thinking the Obama supporters that have followed his career could talk more about the issues I brought up in my post that were in his memoir. But, it seems the only response I got was negative posts.

39. Each positive post makes a difference....
Great intent there FrenchieCat and repeating to glass is half full rather than empty is the way to go. All adds the the ripples in the pond.

Over the months, I have tried advocating unity on DU expressing very much the same sentiments - many threads have sunk like a stone - some get attention. Yet like the headlines, some people find divisiveness more exciting, others just like to throw rocks at hornets nests.

What I have come to is simply asking how does this (negative) post help bring unity to DU and the party?

A few who have not been able to answer the question, have acknowledged that they will try to keep the focus more positive.

Thanks again and we appreciate your words. :hi:

70. It does feel like a new day!
I was just telling a friend about how I wish that we could use this divisive time to bring about a real, authentic discussion and dialog about race and gender in this country. I had faith that we were ready for some real growth and understanding, but I was growing discouraged that we were taking a turn for business as usual. This speech has restored my hope that we as a nation are mature enough to learn and grow and heal. :patriot:

I've been saying this for weeks now, and I was told just this morning that fear of the world's view of our infighting or fear that McCain will use our negative discussions as fodder for his own campaign was just a device to shut down conversation... seriously... just a few moments ago.

People around here are all fired up and have no place positive to go.

It's time we began shunning the negativity and letting those threads sink to the bottom!!!

If you had not made a career of posting negative and insulting threads vis-a-vis other candidates, your words might carry more weight. Suffice it to say that Barack Obama gave a magnificent speech today. This Edwards supporter was moved and uplifted by his words. But all of the Senator's elegant rhetoric and remarkable eloquence don't mask the fact that some of his supporters are assholes. And if that shoe fits, then wear it.

I am not an Obama supporter, I am not a Clinton supporter, I am not an Edwards supporter, I am not anyone's supporter. Today I am a Democrat and I celebrate all that democrats have done to level the playing field and support human rights. The republicans done care about racial divides, glass ceilings, or any of dozens of ways of slicing and dicing America into nifty little groups that can be pitted against each other - for fear and power and money and ego. To hell with them.

Today I am a Democrat pure and simple.

And you think that because "he has spoken" the corporate media is just going to drop the matter?

This is just the opening salvo- a good response on Obama's part, but he or preferably some key supporter, will need to dig into McCain's own religious loonies.

If the Dems really want to win, that is.

112. Besides "Aye," could we also say. . .
. . .what exactly Senator Obama said today that makes you say "AYE"

For me it was his:

CANDOR (yes, he heard controversial statements, but can't disown Reverend. . .disapproves of his prejudicial remarks but won't disown him because he weighs the nuances of this person)

HUMILITY ("my imperfect campaign" "trust in God and American people" to change anything, not by himself)

EMBRACING OLDER GENERATION (Rev. Wright, his white grandma, Ms Ferraro) with their prejudices in order to CHANGE for the younger generation, Obama sets a truly CHANGE OF TONE for this campaign even as the mudslinging continues to a lesser degree.

TOUGH LOVE = SENATOR OBAMA

LISTENER = SENATOR OBAMA

All garnered from his years as a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER. . .I'm really feeling I have a stake in his candidacy and, if he wins, his plan for the next 8 years.

In other words, I say "AYE" to OBAMA'S HOPEFUL VISION OF CHANGE. . .

"BYE" to DECADES of BITTER DIVISIONS.

...Then ever before. Let the naysayers say what they say and do what they do. None of them can undo what's been done. I know I don't post much (I'm a relatively newer DU-person though I've lurked for years), I have to say it's threads like these that make me feel like it's in us, collectively, to get 'it'. And if you don't, I have nothing but respect for your views and feelings. But for those of us that feel something happened today that was extraordinary and have posted in this thread with such positive light, you've made this amazing day that much better. Maybe today can really be the first tomorrow. I can't wait to find out.

146. Obama was magnificent today!
We saw a great american giving a historic speech today! I am so damn proud of Obama! He looked the sleaze merchants, the hate mongers, the divide and conquer pols of both parties in the eye and destroyed them with the beauty of his thoughts!

A party that denies its nomination to this man is a corrupt and dying party! Will the democratic party embrace her son and permit him to lead it to political power for a generation? Or will it cling to the divisive, fear ridden, class warfare model that the republican party is now riding to its doom?

What was that old Lennon saying during the Vietnam war? It went, "Peace if you want it", I believe.

Obama is offering peace, generational change, hope, a building up of the good things, a progressive majority!

IF WE WANT IT!

Please America! This may be our last and only chance to save this country from perpetual war and the total annihilation of the middle class!

Actions speak louder than words. Seems like the Obama campaign likes being in a state of war with the Hillary campaign. It is good for their numbers and his talk was maybe just that, talk.

Still waiting for unity at DU, where Obama supporters are saying rude things about Murtha and Edwards too.

152. a resounding aye here. too FrenchieCat!
although I find myself avoiding and not replying to those kind of threads most of the time anyway. It seems like any negativity should be directed towards our real nemesis- the Republicans. Thank you for this reminder! Have a good day!

154. Aye-Excellent OP , FrenchieCat.
Let's keep this going, hopefully till we have our nominee.

Support the positive threads, the unifying messages that are so
needed at this time of division within our party.

As tempting as it is to respond to negativity,
I will do everything in my power not to.
I would love to see those threads die a quick death.

Great message and thread, FrenchieCat!

160. I've been making use of my ignore list.
Without it, I'd definitely be goaded into pointless flamage.

It's much easier, and is a potent weapon against negativity and flamage, to just go *plonk*.
