Bill Clinton proclaimed "I have repented" at WH breakfast with Reverend Wright

From Ben Smith at Politico

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1998/09/11/reax.whitehouse/

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Sept. 11) -- As the House of Representatives debated the process for releasing the details of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, a tearful President Bill Clinton told a White House breakfast for religious leaders Friday that he has "a broken spirit."

"I have been on quite a journey these last few weeks to get to the end of this, to the rock-bottom truth of where I am," Clinton said in his most emotional and dramatic statement since the affair with Lewinsky became public. "I don't think there is a fancy way to say that I have sinned."

Agreeing with his critics that he was not "contrite" enough during his initial Aug. 17 statement, Clinton said, "It is important to me that everybody who has been hurt know that the sorrow I feel is genuine. First and most important, my family, my friends, my staff, my cabinet, Monica Lewinsky and her family and the American people. I have asked all for their forgiveness."

His comments were the first time the president has publicly apologized to Lewinsky. Clinton went on to describe the journey he has been on during the weeks since his first public admission, saying that he has finally repented.

"I have repented," Clinton said. "I must have God's help to be the person that I want to be. A willingness to give the very forgiveness I seek. A renunciation of the pride and the anger, which cloud judgment, lead people to excuse and compare and to blame and complain."

Hillary was there too - her WH schedule for the day.

4. Did Hillary influence Pastor Wright with her senate display of the BUSH KNEW headline
she put up in May2002?

Was pastor Wright wrong to agree with Hillary's implication that Bush KNEW and wrong to believe the senator's sincerity in questioning the official story on 9-11?

Just because Hillary backtracked quickly after the backlash from that moment, doesn't mean it didn't happen and that many Democrats believe that the official story was a lie and the official government knew much more in advance of 9-11 then they have let on.

You think the GOP has a videoclip of Hillary on the senate floor implying the same as Pastor Wright about 9-11, and they plan to use it in the GE?

Sounds like a Belt Way Scandal !!

It was the right thing to do. Especially in the presence of his wife.

In view of your clear position in this race, I guess I am missing your point.

14. I'm not vilifying him in the least.
I'm just wondering why the Clintons do so. They used to think he was ok. Until it became to their advantage to paint him as a monster.

"Later, Clinton spokesperson Doug Hattaway told ABC News:"She was and is unaware of anyone on the campaign pushing issue with superdelegates. She wants anyone who is talking to superdelegates to focus on our message, which is that she's best prepared to be president and beat John McCain."

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/03/clinton-doesnt.html

Clinton Doesn’t Deny Campaign is Pushing Wright Story to Superdelegates

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign has strictly maintained a public position not to comment on Sen. Barack Obama's relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Many times, questions have been answered with -- "you will have to ask Senator Obama about that."

However at a Thursday press availability in Terra Haute, Indiana after a report surfaced that the Clinton campaign was pushing the Wright story to superdelegates arguing that the relationship hurt Obama's electibility -– Clinton refused to deny that her campaign was pushing the story.

When asked, Clinton ignored the Wright portion of the question and said “well my campaign has been making the case that I am the most electable that I have said that for a year or more that I am the person best able to make the challenges that our country faces as commander in chief.”

When Clinton was then asked specifically if her campaign was pushing the Wright story –- she shrugged and took the next question, ignoring the reporter.

Did you mean this article?

"Drudge Report has photo of Bill Clinton with Rev. Wright >>
Drudge Report, not NBC News, breaks Obama passport breach story >>>
As usual, NBC News and Keith Olbermann get their information from elsewhere before 'confirming;'
pretty pathetic that a so-called major news organization gets it news leads from Matt Drudge"

Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:03 PM by Straight Shooter
Rev. Wright was just a maverick preacher at the time, nothing like what he is now. He sure seems pleased to be in Bill's company, too.

Interesting date, though. 9/11.

ETA: Apparently Rev. Gerald Mann was the honored guest, as is shown on the agenda.

34. Holy Cow!
Wright was at a WH breakfast with how many others? Wright was in attendance when Bill Clinton made a statement? How shocking!

Was Wright the spiritual advisor to Bill or Hillary Clinton for the past 20 years? No. Did Wright marry Bill and Hillary Clinton? No. Did Wright baptise Chelsea Clinton? No. Did the Clinton family sit in the pew of Wright's church for 20 years? No.

Some of you need to get a grip.
