CBS/NYTimes National Poll: 70% Approved of Obama's Speech
Some good news for Obama supporters:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/3/21/173723/656/312/481756

A new national poll released Friday showed voters who heard or read about Barack Obama’s speech on his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and race relations, broadly approved of it.

Seven in 10 said he did a good job talking about race relations and as many said he did a good job explaining his relationship with Reverend Wright, according to a CBS News poll conducted Thursday.

More than six in 10, moreover, said they mostly agreed with what he said about race relations in this country, including a broad majority of Democrats and independents, but fewer — four in 10 — Republicans.

How the issue will ultimately affect Mr. Obama’s presidential aspirations remains to be seen. But seven in 10 voters nationwide who have followed the issue said it will make no difference in their vote decision, while the rest evenly divided over whether they will be more or less likely to vote for him.

1. That's a huge number when you consider that Republcans and Hillary supporters voted in that poll.
:)

7. Yet it's probably tiny when you consider how many people
actually saw, heard, or read it.

9. Well, the video is predicted to be the most viewed political speech on the Internet...
before it's all over with. That's what The Nation is saying.

12. The poll included people who'd heard of it,
not just people who saw, heard, or read the whole thing. It includes people who just heard soundbites or read excerpts in the paper. That's almost everybody, I think.

22. But I am confused about one thing:
This part:

"But seven in 10 voters nationwide who have followed the issue said it will make no difference in their vote decision, while the rest evenly divided over whether they will be more or less likely to vote for him."

When they say the issue, do they mean the whole Wright thing, or do they mean the speech? Because if it's the whole Wright thing, then this poll says for 70% it had no effect, for 15% they're more likely to vote for him, and for 15% they're less likely to vote for them. Net change: zero!

2. And that's including Repugs AND Dems!
Yes, fewer Rs than Ds were supportive but the fact that 70% of the respondents approved is
good news!

4. THIS is an excellent reaction for this country. SOTU rarely get that high a rating.
Which also proves the NEGATIVE reaction tilt in the media coverage the last few days has been TOTAL BULLSHIT!

13. Good to finally have some statistics, because the media is atrocious at this sort of thing
Seriously, I've ranted at my TV a bit -- and some of the pundits and hosts are so sure of themselves (like Scarborough, who thinks he has some magical connection to blue collar whites).

5. If we as Americans don't answer the call of an Obama
nomination, people who watch and read this speech in the future will wonder what were we thinking.

8. Fox poll from yesterday was encouraging, too
Poll: Majority Doesn't Believe Obama Shares Wright's Views
By Eric Kleefeld - March 20, 2008, 5:57PM

A new poll from Fox News, the first major poll taken since Barack Obama's big speech on race relations, shows that the effect of the Jeremiah Wright flap might not be so bad after all.

By a 57%-24% margin, registered voters do not believe that Obama shares Wright's controversial views. The internals show only 17% of Democrats saying Obama shares Wright's ideas, along with 20% of independents and 36% of Republicans.

Fox also asked respondents whether they had doubts about Obama because of his association with Wright. The results: 35% Yes, 54% No, with the numbers standing at 26%-66% for Democrats, 27%-61% among independents, and 56%-33% with Republicans.

10. I thought it was exceptionally courageous, and I'm sorry so many
are being so fuckin' nit-picky...talk about not seeing the forest for the trees...Yes, there are things he might have phrased more effectively, but SO WHAT?? Holy shit, people, we've got McCain repeating and repeating a deliberate LIE, we've had Chimpy the Imbecile sticking his foot in his lyin' yap every time he opens it for almost EIGHT YEARS now, for GOD'S SAKE...let's move ON, and grow UP, and deal with the issues facing us like realistic adults. Please.
