Carville calls Richardson's endorsement an "act of betrayal."
That upsets me to hear that. It was not an act of betrayal, it was the act of a man who struggled about what was right. Doesn't sound like it went over to well with any in the Clinton campaign.

First a Tense Talk With Clinton, Then Richardson Backs Obama

“I talked to Senator Clinton last night,” Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico said on Friday, describing the tense telephone call in which he informed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton that, despite two months of personal entreaties by her and her husband, he would be endorsing Senator Barack Obama for president.

“Let me tell you: we’ve had better conversations,” Mr. Richardson sai.

He made it clear he was worried about the tone of the campaign. He said so also on Countdown.

“I’m not going to advise any other candidate when to get in and out of the race,” Mr. Richardson said after appearing in Portland with Mr. Obama. “Senator Clinton has a right to stay in the race, but eventually we don’t want to go into the Democratic convention bloodied. This was another reason for my getting in and endorsing, the need to perhaps send a message that we need unity.”

In many ways, the decision by Mr. Richardson, a longtime political ally of the Clintons, was as much a tale about his relationship with them as it was about the course of Mr. Obama’s campaign.

James Carville got his two cents in, and talked about 30 pieces of silver. Tasteless rhetoric.

The reaction of some of Mr. Clinton’s allies suggests that might have been a wise decision. “An act of betrayal,” said James Carville, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton and a friend of Mr. Clinton.

“Mr. Richardson’s endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic,” Mr. Carville said, referring to Holy Week.

I guess I should not be surprised when he says such things. He did his share of damage to the party right after our big win in November 06.

Carville implies the Clinton as complicit in his attacks on Howard Dean

Flush with victory after the election, Rahm’s allies, led by Carville, try to mount a coup at the DNC by publicly attacking Dean and suggesting he be replaced by Harold Ford, a Tennessee moderate who just lost a Senate race. “You can’t go into 2008 having a party chairman that is completely disconnected from the congressional leadership and the campaign committees,” Carville tells me, further pounding the wedge that divides the Deaniacs and the Clintonites. When I ask if Rahm agrees, Carville says, “It’s not any secret that Rahm has expressed disdain for Dean and not very secret that Rahm and I are close. It doesn’t take a lot of dot-connecting here.”

What about the Clintons, who, given Hillary’s presidential ambitions, have more cause for concern about who runs the DNC in 2008? “Let’s just say nobody has called me telling me this is a bad idea. Sometimes silence is eloquence.” Not only did Carville’s coup fail but it arguably strengthened Dean, who, speaking before his state-party allies, mocked the attempt as a desperate attack from the “old Democratic Party.” Cutting his losses, Rahm quickly leaked word to the press that he and Dean had negotiated a truce.

Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, Bill Richardson did not. This kind of talk needs to stop.

But we know that's impossible for the Clinton's. They go out like nuclear bomb, and leave their supporters in the wake to clean up for them.

how could anyone, never mind any democrat, anyone lose respect for al gore? nobel peace prize winner al gore?

hai ya

i'm blown away that it was even typed. On the personal level it's his prerogative whether to interject in the race or not. Everything happening right now---that's why he stayed out. smart man, he's learned to do good in other ways that within their context are of just as if not more important than the 50 stars.

On the political level, I'm actually VERY happy he's stayed completely neutral. Yes back around super Tuesday I was hoping he's endorse Obama, but in retrospect now I think it's very propitious that he did not. It would have made a difference at the time, yes, but not nearly as much of a difference as he will now have the clout to make if called upon to arbitrate at the convention. In a lot of ways he's the last great, iconic and unimpeachable democratic leader standing, and if needed his gravitas, auctoritas, pietas, and dignitas (all four of the cardinal political virtues) will make all the difference if influencing the party in the right direction should the conundrum only complicate further by June....

Note in the Rasmussen poll, McCain is ahead of both of them. Lord I fear the worst.

Please Mr. Gore step into this thing. Do not endorse either of them, and for God's sake don't allow them in your administration. Um, have you heard of John Edwards, the only one who actually stated how he was going to do things.....a written 80-page book on what his platform will be...duh!!!

Carville is a traitor to the Dem party I think, doesn't care about the party at all. These longtime "in" people think they own the party and can do whatever they please. It can't have been easy for Howard Dean to stand up to them these past few years. Quiet strength.

I was just thinking; compare Mrs. Howard Dean, the country doctor, and Mrs. James Carville, the crazy secretary to Dick Cheney. No wonder James is the way he is.

124. Not only is Carville a traitor to the party but to Democracy (MILLION $ ASSHOLE):
Did Carville Tip Bush Off to Kerry Strategy (Woodward)
By M.J. Rosenberg | bio

?On page 344, Woodward describes the doings at the White House in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the day after the '04 election.

Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.

So Kerry decides to fight. In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.

So what happened?

James Carville gets on the phone with his wife, Mary Matalin, who is at the White House with Bush.

"Carville told her he had some inside news. The Kerry campaign was going to challenge the provisional ballots in Ohio -- perhaps up to 250,000 of them. 'I don't agree with it, Carville said. I'm just telling you that's what they're talking about.'

"Matalin went to Cheney to report...You better tell the President Cheney told her."

Matalin does, advising Bush that "somebody in authority needed to get in touch with J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican Secretary of State in Ohio who would be in charge of any challenge to the provisional votes." An SOS goes out to Blackwell.

The rest is history.

Million Dollar Assholes: Carville, Shrum & Greenberg

-snip

I saw a documentary that blew me away today but I don't mean in a good way. It was called Our Brand is Crisis, about how the firm of Carville, Greenberg and Shrum (as in James Ragin' Cajun Carville and Bob $5 million man Shrum) travel around the world meddling in political situations they know little about for fun and profit when they're not busy losing Presidential elections.

The film takes place in the Bolivian election of 2002, when Carville et. al. convinced the Bolivian people they needed to elect Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, aka Goni, an American-born candidate who speaks Spanish with an accent and who had failed miserably once before as President during the 90s. He is elected by the thinnest of margins, only to be forced to resign 14 months later amid riots that left 100 people dead.

I was frankly, a little surprised to hear that he endorsed Obama. I've always liked Richardson, and was leaning between him and Obama at the beginning of this race.

I would have respected his decision to endorse Clinton if he had done so.

It's hard to believe that someone that was close to the Clintons would be dismissed so easily by them.

In addition, does Carville believe that Clinton was *entitled* to Gov. Richardson's vote? Her advisors have done such a disservice to her.

James Carville wants Dean out despite his success because he's...
  • an RNC mole
  • a DLC foot solider
  • a henpecked husand
  • down to his fifteenth minute
  • just trying to hustle up a new job
  • insanely jealous
When in doubt, follow the money: Dean's fifty-state strategy spread the wealth, which meant smaller fees for fatcat consultants like Carville.

42. Now WHERE Have I Heard This Before ???
<snip>

CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN) — Former presidential candidate and Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd endorsed the candidacy of Barack Obama today with a call for the party "to come together," warning Democrats were in "danger" of damaging the party with a divisive campaign.

At a Cleveland press conference with Obama, Dodd denied he was implying Sen. Hillary Clinton should drop out, but merely suggesting that both campaigns watch their tone over the next week leading up to the critical Ohio and Texas contests.

Dodd said he informed Clinton last night of his decision to endorse Obama, adding that it was "not a comfortable" discussion.

48. To me, these are telling comments. I can't imagine that Dodd and Richardson
would say anything except something like, "It was a difficult conversation, but Senator Clinton showed the grace and understanding for which I've always known her" UNLESS it went really, really badly in those conversations. I think the "uncomfortable" and "not pleasant" comments actually suggest that it was very nasty indeed.

To me, it only shows how desperate they are and furthermore and more importantly, how very much like the current squatters in the White House they are, too. It sickens me to see Richardson treated so badly, but I really think if they keep this crap up, more Democratic leaders are going to bring this to a screeching halt. Furthermore (and lastly) if they dare to continue to slander Richardson in such a public way, it will only hurt THEM. Richardson is widely respected, and the fact that he made such a late decision in favor of Obama will only make THEM look bad, not him.

I might change my mind, but that's my initial thought anyway.

74. Just because they're friends, doesn't preclude the fact that he can endorse whomever he wants
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 12:20 AM by tammywammy
He didn't repeat the conversation, all he said was that it didn't go well. And Carville coming out and calling Richardson Hillary's Judas isn't really helping matters.

Richardson's reply to the Clinton campaign

""I resent the fact that the Clinton people are now saying that my endorsement is too late because I only can help with Texans — with Texas and Hispanics, implying that that's my only value," the New Mexico governor told CNN's John King.

"That's typical of some of his advisers that kind of turned me off."Earlier Friday, Clinton campaign senior strategist Mark Penn said he thought Richardson's endorsement came too late to make an impact.

“The time that he could have been effective has long since passed," Penn told reporters on a conference call. "I don’t think it is a significant endorsement in this environment.”"

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/21/richardson-calls-out-clinton-adviser/

No matter that he said the phone conversation was "painful", the Clinton campaign has then said in effect that Richardson only helps with the Hispanic voters and is like Judas. If the Clintons think so highly of Richardson, you'd think they would reign in their surrogates.

The Judas comment doesn't reflect a state of deep moral outrage on Carville's part. It reflects his fear that if HRC doesn't become president, then he may have to find a new line of work.

Maybe he should consider a career in movies. I think "The Passion Of The Clinton" would make a fine film.

110. Carville is just a douchebag. If it weren't for Ross Perot, Bubba never would have been President.
And Carville would have had to go back to work at the carwash.
This asshole hasn't been right about anything in 16 years.
Think about that for a few minutes.

He said "it's the economy, stupid" back in 1992 and then stood around grinning like a monkey that had just been fucked for 4 years, taking credit for Bubba being elected President.
Instead, Carville should have given credit to where the credit was due - to Ross Perot, for playing the part of spoiler.
Perot siphoned off enough votes from Bush Senior for Bubba to squeeze in.

Now since Lil' Miss Inevitability can't win the nomination, he is running around and acting like we are all traitors, because he thinks we "owed it" to her.
He's as full of shit as Pat Buchanan.

No one wants to be in Clinton's pocket.

Turkish: "You got to deal with him. You just got to make sure you don't end up owing him. Cause then you're in his debt. Which means, your in his pocket. And once you're in that, you ain't ever coming out."

114. That was just unnecessarily nasty on Carville's part.
Bill Richardson's a big boy.

He won election as a member of Congress on his own. He gained a reputation as a crisis negotiator on his own.

Yes Bill Clinton appointed him Ambassador to the UN and then Energy Secretary, and he owes Clinton something for that but he's been Governor of New Mexico for some time now and seems to have been moving for some time from the DLC positions that he once embraced. He became a strong--and presumably sincere--opponent of the Iraq war and as governor has taken a strong environmental line that apparently he could not as Clinton's energy secretary any more than Al Gore could do the same as Clinton's Vice President.

He's his own man and I guess he showed it today.

Sour grapes James?

118. No rational basis for his charge...
...unless we hypothesize some reason that Richardson's endorsement already belonged to Clinton, and that all Obama voters are similarly traitors. He didn't get around to saying exactly what the betrayal was, so I suppose this is just his petulant way of registering disappointment, and coming to terms with his coming irrelevancy. He's dined out on the Clintons for a long time now, and if he really has backed the loser, his star will fade.

So this is an "act of betrayal". It is another phrase in the language of attacks and divisiveness. I found it equally bizarre to hear Bill Clinton suggest that his wife and McCain would run nice campaigns based on issues, if only Obama would leave so that these messy incidents with him would stop. As though it is the poor Clintons who are subjected to a vast left wing conspiracy in this case. He is old enough to know that I am old enough to know better as to where the bad tone is coming from - maybe they are spending so much time tailoring their arguments to an eighth grade comprehension level that they forget about the adults who are also listening.

It is the Clintons in the dirty fighting attack mode that gives rise to the mess the dems are facing right now, and the solution lies with them. Carville characterizing Richardson's decision as a betrayal is an example. I am thinking the only correct thing to do is just turn off the tv when Carville is on. I have already made the decision to do that when Ms. Clinton is on the air. Play nice, I'll listen. Start a fight or whisper a nasty rumor to fan flames - I won't. Rewarding someone who starts a dirty fight isn't productive.

I think the Clintons are better suited to finding some state positions where they can fight like unruly kids on a school playground. Running the nation in frightening economic and foreign affairs times is a job for an adult.

136. Which elected office has Carville held?
Seems to me that it was the PEOPLE of New Mexico who made Richardson governor, not Bill Clinton.

Jim Carville, while well known and someone who has done service to the Democratic party for over 2 decades - has never been elected to an office -"as far as I know".

My loyalty and allegiance is to the PEOPLE, not the candidate's campaign manager.

Not about to goosestep behind anyone, friend - not even Bill Clinton's wife.

137. Let me see if I follow.
So, years ago, Bill Richardson made a deal, perhaps unspoken, that if the Clintons used his expertise in foreign policy by elevating him to a role of service to the American people, he would in turn, years later, support a hypothetical Hillary run for the White House?

Really?

Richardson is free to endorse whom he wishes. I don't think he is beholding to HC because Bill made him sec. of energy or an ambassador. Presumably the administration and the country benefitted for Richardson's ability just as Richardson's resume benefitted from the assignments. Nevertheless, the tradition of patronage based on personal loyalty dies hard. That tradition extends back to classical times and even further to neolithic tribal society. The careers of men like Julius Caesar were grounded on favors others owed to him. So I understand the anger even if it is not necessarily justified.

On the other hand, the idea that this is doing what is right is pretty foolish too. Richardson is doing his best to continue his ladder-climb. He feels his best bet is with Obama. He probably believes O will win the nomination. Also, it is possible that a postion in the administration he wants has already been promised to someone else by HC. So Richardson's end of this is pretty political too in the sense that it is jockying for position.

As much as I object to his 'Judas' depiction of Bill Richardson I also remember his willingness o go for the throat in the hand to hand of political infighting. Yes, he jumped the shark on this one, but I won't write him out of the script strictly on that basis.

But, he did certainly screw it up this time.

164. pretty much the death knell for Clinton '08
even Richardson couldn't take anymore of her campaign's extremely uncivil behavior. This was a man who was brought in along with the Clinton power structure a decade back, and who I was pretty sure was going back her or keep silent, but obviously, the negative tone and types of attacks thrown at Obama really disgusted him - and this sure sounds the bell telling Hillary it's over... go home.

I am very delighted in Richardson's words... he's impressive, and seemed much more 'himself' than he did in the debates.

Oh...
someone upthread repeated the Penn line about this not mattering because of the Latinos.

Um, piss off. THAT is racist. Richardson is a heavy hitter and has pull across the board in the Democratic party. It has nothing to do with Latinos, ya ignorant jerk.

Also, Richardson owes the Clintons absolutely NOTHING. He was a well known representative before serving in the Clinton Admin. and was one of the best assets Bill Clinton ever had. If anything the Clintons OWE HIM for elevating his presidency through exemplary foreign policy. Afterward he was elected, and REelected governer of NM. I say again, he owes them NOTHING. He's a good man for going with his conscience.

That's the disconnect on this statement. Richardson wanted to deny Hillary the presidency by becoming the President. Why wasn't this a betrayal?

So much of the Clinton Campaign is built upon a casual dismissal of all challengers as if they were a cute puppy nipping at her heels.
