Senator from N.C. still hot on campaign trail, but Kerry keeping quiet

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Edwards ended his presidential bid almost three months ago, but he's still hot on the campaign trail, firing up Democrats hungry to take back the White House this fall.

At each stop, the Tar Heel Democrat dutifully promotes Sen. John Kerry, his former rival and the party's presidential nominee-to-be. But Edwards' travels to swing states such as Florida, Ohio, Minnesota and Washington are also boosting another, subtler campaign: The one to make him Kerry's running mate.

Political etiquette prevents Edwards from even talking about the vice presidential spot, but the people who flock to his speeches aren't shy about doing what they can to further the latest ambition of this new Democratic star.

"It was like working the rope with Elvis Presley," says Mike Erlandson, state party chairman in Minnesota, where Edwards drew 3,000 Democrats on May 22. "People just wanted to touch him and get his autograph. ... If you had taken a straw poll after he spoke, he would have been the resounding choice (for vice president)."

4. did anyone remember or hear that thing Kerry said about Edwards ?

it was at some event where they campaigned together and edwards spoke first. when edwards was done kerry said something like "wanting to bottle that up and take it around the country" referring to edwards' doing a great job of speaking and introducing kerry.
