To all the Penelas-bashing Deutsch-supporters:
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 11:25 PM by JohnLocke
Is this who YOU want as your canidate for senator from the Sunshire State? Deutsch is an awful choice. Support Castor if you must, but don't support Deutsch. If you do, this is who you're backing; a person who:

1. A supporter of the War on Iraq.
2. An enthusiastic Death Penalty Proponent.
3. "Obnoxious, abrasive and aloof"
..... "He can be a vile human being," said a Democrat in Congress.
..... "Several of his congressional colleagues from Florida had surprisingly harsh things to say about Deutsch during recent interviews in Washington. None would allow his name to be used. After all, Deutsch could win and they would have to deal with him as one of Florida's two senators." {I wouldn’t be too worried. If the Repubs put up Martinez, it’s all over}.
4. Someone Who Continually attacks Penelas in Bizarre, Irrational Manner
..... "Deutsch's tougher side showed up early in the campaign. In August, a full year before voters were to go to the polls, Deutsch went on the attack, accusing Penelas of "criminal activity" in raising money for his campaign." {This from the guy who is the leader in taking donations from outside Florida}.
..... "When Penelas said it was untrue, Deutsch called him a 'pathological liar.' Then Deustch filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission urging it to investigate Penelas. That complaint is under review."
5. A Do-Nothing Congressperson Who Supports the Republican Agenda
..... "Voted for welfare reform, saying, 'People respond to incentives. No one wants to be on the public dole.' And he voted in favor of a ban on burning American flags."
..... "'The flag is a symbol and there are certain limits to free speech,' Deutsch says. 'It is not just a piece of cloth. When coffins come back from Iraq, they are covered with an American flag, not just some piece of paper or cloth. You can protest without destroying the flag.'"

1. is Deutsch really going after Castor ?
i read that in another forum that he has or is going to. i'm guessing castor is the best choice from what people said. they say she does well in polls against her republican opponents unlike the 2 guys she is running against. and she has managed to stay above the attacks so far which will make it easier for all sides to come together to back her.

9. A Deutsch supporter is about to
Terror financing suspect could haunt Castor
Published June 5, 2004

Languishing in a prison cell in Central Florida is an inmate who could end up derailing Betty Castor's U.S. Senate race.

Sami al-Arian is being held on charges that he financed Islamic Jihad terrorists while a professor at a school Castor headed, the University of South Florida.

You'll be hearing a lot about al-Arian, say Democratic insiders. Television ads are being fashioned that slam Castor for not firing al-Arian. Castor refused to dismiss the professor for years after calls he be tossed out and after international publicity about his role in Islamic Jihad.

Al-Arian was suspended five days after Castor quit the university in 2001. He was arrested two years later.

4. I lean towards Castor
I don't see a lot of Deutch supporters at DU. I don't see it as taking a side between one or the other. Personally, Deutch is more DLC than I would prefer.

My biggest concern is this turning into a nasty primary fight. That's definitely the way it appears to be headed. I could support any of the 3 candidates in the general. It'll be interesting to see if Deutch and Penelas end up taking each other down, leaving Castor standing at the end. I don't know how aggressive Deutch is in going after Castor.

As to Point #5, I don't see how that differs from many other Dems. Clinton definitely favored welfare reform. I remember that even Dennis Kucinich favored a flag burning amendment. I can't find the positions of Penelas and Castor on these particular issues. Likely, it's easier to know Deutch on the issues, considering all his votes in Congress.

7. The world according to Gore.....
God forbid a Cuban win and cause the majority of other Cubans to pull the lever for Kerry in 2004.

That shit might really threaten the Bush Presidency and cause old Al to fade away into history....
