Kerry leads Bush by 7 points in new poll

Updated: 11:47 a.m. ET June 10, 2004LOS ANGELES - Democratic candidate John Kerry leads President Bush 51 percent to 44 percent among American voters in a two-way race for president, according to a Los Angeles Times poll published Thursday.

Kerry’s margin of 7 percentage points shrinks only slightly to 6 percentage points, 48-42, in a three-way race with independent candidate Ralph Nader getting 4 percentage points, poll results show.

The Times said that "widespread unease over the country's direction and doubts about President Bush's policies on Iraq" by voters are behind Kerry's good showing and the poll suggests "that attitudes may be coalescing for a contest that pivots on the classic electoral question at times of discontent: Will voters see more risk in stability or change?"

3. Just talked to a Republican pollster about this

He says they used an "oversample of Democrats and are going to retract the poll." He also thinks Bush is leading outside the margin of error. I think he's living in fantasy land.

4. This is great news.

And he isn't even doing much. He has yet to pick a vp which will give him a good bounce. Bush* on the other hand had his Europe thing going on and of course RR's passing. Would think that would have given him a temporary bounce. Maybe it did and he's even lower than this. Cautiously optimistic.

5. for what it's worth...

my father, who's voted republican for the last twenty years, is planning on voting for kerry. every time he mentions bush's name he always ends up angrily calling him an idiot (and it sings like music in my ears). and i know this is just one guy, but in my mind it's representative of the tide turning our way, maybe because it was so unexpected. i'm probably one of the only people he would admit this to. i'm hoping there are many more republicans like him

My dad, who last voted Democrat in the Presidential in 1976, told me today he will gladly pull the lever for Kerry. I was floored, I was so happy.

Maybe the media is asking the wrong question. Will voters see more stability in chaos or change?

10. For some reason

I'm somewhat skeptical of the LA Times polls...They do seem like they are somewhat biased in favor of us. Not that I don't believe Kerry is leading. I have little doubt that he is. It's just that I remember them being off in the CA recall election...So I'm not sure how great their track record is...So I'll be cautiously optimistic.
