Bush leads North Carolina poll, but Kerry's numbers still good

while bush does lead 47 to 42, the number is actually good news for kerry because bush won north carolina in 2000 with 56 percent to gore's 43 percent. also, consider that kerry is a northeasterner from massachusettes which is seen as a liability in the south. yet bush still can't break 50 percent with kerry being the opponent.


<RALEIGH, N.C. - President Bush would win North Carolina by a slim margin if the presidential election was held today, according to a new statewide poll.

In the poll, 47 percent of likely voters chose Bush, a Republican, while 42 percent selected presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry.

The margin would be smaller if Kerry picks Sen. John Edwards as his running mate, according to the survey, conducted June 13-16 for The News & Observer, WRAL-TV and WUNC radio.

"Kerry doesn't have to win North Carolina to win the presidency. Everybody knows that. Bush knows that," said Del Ali of Research 2000, the Maryland polling firm that conducted the survey. "But by taking Edwards on the ticket, it really does force Bush to spend time in an area that, frankly, he can't afford to spend time in."

Both Republicans and Democrats said Monday that the numbers are unusually close for North Carolina, which hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976.>

In 2000 56 + 43 equals 99%.

in poll 47 + 42 equals 89%.

Either their are a lot of Nader supporters in NC or most likely
undecided voters.

3. yes, undecided, that's the good news, they are ones who voted Bush in 2000

but now they so far don't support him and are undecided so kerry has to convince them to vote for him.

the numbers with edwards on the ticket are not in the article but others have shown that bush either still leads , but with less, or they are tied. the fact that kerry has not campaignined in north carolina could mean if kerry actually goes there the numbers might push him up. but i think for north carolina, these numbers are good news for kerry and other democrats.
