‘Get your ass out’

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) had a harsh and simple message yesterday for independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader: “Get your ass out.”

Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Mich.) made that comment to the man many Democrats blamed for putting Bush in the White House, according to several sources in the closed-door meeting.

“Many of us told him that,” said Rep. Major Owens (D-N.Y.). But Nader appeared unwilling to heed the CBC’s advice, causing many black lawmakers to express their frustration.

“The guy’s got a Messiah complex,” said Rep. Al Wynn (D-Md.). “He’s all over the park on why he wants to run. He gives you all kinds of reasons, none of which match the rationale of his candidacy.”

When the CBC jumps on you and you still don't budge, then you aren't listening. The CBC has members who tell it straight. If Nader didn't hear them, then he won't hear anyone.

Frankly, I don't think Nader will be a problem for the Democrats. Too many people know what is at stake in this election.

2. But some states may be close

He may not have to get 3% to affect the outcome of some states. In 2000 Bush won Florida by 0.01% and Gore won Oregon by 0.4%.

7. I'm glad they were blunt, but I am sure that Nader has convinced

himself that if he doesn't stay in, then the Democrats will refuse to listen to what he considers the more progressive voices in the party. He may be partially correct. However, the natural consequences of his behavior in 2000 and perhaps in 2004 are that progressives will have no power whatsoever, as they will not hold the WH or either house.

He already has convinced himself that the following mathematical reality does not exist and can't recur in 2004 (in FL or elsewhere):

# of votes that would have beaten Bush in Florida =

# of votes Gore received and were counted

plus

(# of votes Gore received and weren't counted

OR

# of votes of people disenfranchised illegally by Kathleen Harris, most of whom would have voted for Gore

OR

# of votes that went to Nader that would have otherwise gone to the Democrat if Nader were not on the ticket).

He recognizes only the first two of the "plusses" and refuses to acknowledge that the third would have put Gore over the top--all the while making fun of Democrats for "not understanding math". I can't believe he is so stupid that he is unable to understand basic addition, so I have to chalk it up to blind ego.

It is really a shame that so many contributions that he has made on behalf of consumers and others will always be overshadowed by his childish unwillingness to accept compromises to get some of what he wants acomplished, when the alternatives are far, far worse.
