NYTimes buying $1.5 million in gifts for Republicans during NYC convention

When 5,000 Republican delegates arrive in New York for the Aug. 30-Sept. 2 convention, they'll be given free tickets to shows like "42nd Street," "Wonderful Town," "The Lion King""The Lion King" and "Bombay Dreams."

Salute to Broadway, a group spearheaded by League of American Theaters & Producers, arranged for tickets to special Sunday night performances, all paid for by the New York Times.

The N.Y. Times is coughing up approximately $1.5 million in various amenities to make Gotham fun for the delegates. Reps of the paper wouldn't give specifics about the outlay for Broadway, but the cost would be at least $600,000.

In a written statement, Times chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. explained, "The New York Times believes in New York, in Broadway and in democracy. We're delighted to be playing a role in bringing all three together for a night of entertainment and enlightenment."
