if the dem wins the Electoral College, but loses the popular vote

It could happen in a close election. They said it would happen to Gore in 2000, but it ended up happening to Bush.

The way it would work is our candidate wins the big midwest states in squeakers (Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, etc.), while Bush cleans house in the south.

I wouldn't like this scenario because it would be nice to have a mandate, though it would be funny to see the republicans try and say our president wasn't elected, etc.

IMHO, if a candidate wins the electoral college, he/she has won. But Bush* didn't. Florida was stolen.

They get more representation. Candidates would never visit the small states if the EC was abolished. They would just maximize turnout in the big states.

can you imagine the gloating? The bumperstickers on each side? The protests? The whining? The threats and violence coming from the Right? (I can certainly imagine that.)

I'd enjoy it. And the thing is, I am a very very vindictive bastard. I'd love to see Dean win the Gore states and Ohio - not a single southern state. And then, we bail-out the blue states in debt. See how the South likes the results of its continual stupid voting (and yes, I say this as a lifelong Southerner). Hehe!

Then the GOP does what it said it would do in 2000. Sic the Mighty Wurletzer on how the Dems are stealing the election and going against the will of the people. They will flip some electors and Bush 'wins' again. If that fails just shoot the new winners and that's that.
There is no way in the world Bush doesn't stay. None. There is no alternative. It's a one party state now. It's over.

what happens if 2000 repeats and the Democratic nominee wins the popular vote, but not the electoral college? Remember, the red states have gained votes in the EC. suppose their is another disputed state? Suppose, this time, the Dem wins the first count, but the state SC orders a recount, and this time, the USSC declines to intervene?

I'm saving my gloating till after the election, myself.

If that doesn't work, the traitors in the U.S. Supreme
Court declare that the Electoral College was not correct
and they need to do it again until they "get it right".

Seniors, military families, draft age adults, union members, the parents of children that are approaching draft age, Blacks, Latinos, and Women are going to turn out in order to slap that smirk off of that face.
