It is not an either-or thing, there are plenty of other alternatives. You can absolutely maintain the tax cuts on the middle-class and the poor while restoring services, you just need to be able to tax the rich even more, or cut non-service areas of the budget (e.g. defense), or trim the deficit at a less breakneck pace.

Why should we subsidize your son's house? Or the number of children he has? Why should he subsidize my house or my children?

Amazing how many people who are quick to oppose welfare payments to the poor fail to see their own middle class welfare, such as mortgage deduction. Who do you think picks up the difference?

The real issue is that the entire tax code should be scrapped. Its complexities are due to the fact that the politicians use it to bestow benefits to their corporate contributors.

The Raaaaaagun administration passed this deduction, along with 3 year income averaging which helped young people getting into their careers, but repealed it within 4 years because of the cost to Government revenues.

Lieberman said he is a man of values. One of the Jewish values discussed in this book is "Don't speak unless you have something to say."

Joe clearly does not.

I am Jewish and think Lieberman is basically a mensch (good person) but he is not presidential material. Never has been, never will be.

Lieberman has zero credibility as a good solid Dem. All he does is give Dean a boost and divide the party. If Dean's our candidate we must not have given * the ammunition he needs to shoot Dean down. This goes for all the other candidates also. When Dean people bash Clark they run the same risk.

24. I think I have Joe's problem figured out....

After all, he IS the elected Vice President of the United States. He probably assumed that would buy him at least a decent share of the primary pie. I think he, and to a slightly lesser extent Kerry and Gephardt, actually believe they have paid their dues and are "owed" the nomination by the party, and this is why the three of them resent Dean rising to the top of the pack. Well, as the Doc says, you don't beat Bush by being Bush Lite, and nobody does Bush Lite better than Joe.
