Tonight I attended a function for the woman running for state representative for my area. (Katy Hubener, Place 106, Texas House of Representatives) She's running against a particularly vile, nasty Republican who has been in office, NOT representing us, for TWELVE years. Last time he even ran unopposed.
As a reminder, I live in a Dallas suburb with about 140,000 people. Well. The superintendant of schools showed up, two assistant supers showed up, FIVE of the seven school board members, two city council members (which says a lot since I presumed the city council was a bunch of good ol' boys), the entire local carpenter's union AND electrical worker's union, tons of teachers, the whole city Democrats group, the county tax assessor, and loads of other people.
Wow. I saw some of my neighbors there, parents of my child's classmates. I was quite honestly a bit shocked at the turnout. This is for STATE rep, in Austin, not DC. She raised a buttload of money tonight and all indicators (ears to the ground) are that she is going to win.
We'll have Democratic representation in Austin for the first time in 12 years (it was a Dem before). My burb is very blue-collar and working class, and it just warmed my heart to see so many good Democrats out there that there wasn't even enough room for everyone. And almost to a person busting out their checkbooks!
Shows you how much Texas wants some Dems back in office, eh? I heard so many people telling her, "Here's my number, just call me, anything I can do, I will."
On a side note, Martin Frost, running in Dallas, is looking good against Pete Sessions, but this is still the race of his life.
