If not a mutt from the pound, then the Obama family should go for a dog from an animal rescue. If they adopt an adult dog that has been trained well they will have a much easier time adjusting to having a pet.

20. I'd favor a sporting breed over a terrier ... for their first dog.

The sporting breeds are easier for a first-timer to train, easier to socialize, and less territorial.

If it were just a matter of SIZE (and allergies weren't an issue) I'd go with a Newfie (absolutely marvelous with kids) and stay away from smaller breeds ... if only because both Malia and Sasha are in their 'energetic' years and should be able to rough-house without much fear of injuring the dog. Newfies handle that SUPERBLY.

fyi, VERY easy to socialize and train.

GREAT family dogs, several size types.

But for the 'appearance,' I'd also recommend poodle; VERY intelligent, and other good traits. Me, I'd like a Bedlington AND a Standard Poodle at the same time! Too late, tho!

I still miss my Teddy. He was a MaltPoo - and wife who has allergies made me give him away - he was very hyper dog, but very fiercely loyal to me.

He's one of the few hypoallergenic dogs you can have.

My Lab ("Bo" 1977-1989) was smarter than some humans - conversational. He'd open the cupboard and get his own Milk Bone - only ONE and only with permission. He was trained to 'stay' damned near forever, heeled, retrieved like a champ, responded to hand signals, and was my best friend ever. We loved to swim together,

My friends would invite Bo to visit ... and say I could come too. He was welcome in their homes. (That says a lot.)

Spot is actually one of Millie's puppies.

But as far as the "purity" thing goes... We've had 6 dogs, and the one known purebred was this high-strung Cocker Spaniel that was WAY more of a dog than we were prepared to handle. One of them was supposed to be a maltese poodle, but she might have had something else in her.

The rest of them have been mutts, and real sweeties. The Cocker was the worst $250 we ever spent, Pippi (Cattle dog mixed with who knows what) cost 80 dollars to adopt from the pound, Polly (Lab/cattle dog) was 50 bucks, Bonnie (the poodle) was a gift, Cinder was Bonnie's puppy with the Pekingese (sp?) down the street, and Bailey (Springer/Golden retriever) was free.

The "purebred" thing is SUCH a scam. It's bad for the dogs, and frustrating for the owners when the dog is SO inbred that it's either a behavioral nightmare or has genetic problems requiring thousands of dollars to fix.

"Buying" a dog is rather different at the very beginning than saving a dog. Think People.

And the dog that taught me a lot more about what the best qualities in being human are was a street rescued pit bull. Very dog, run and chase and all that, but also very caring with humans. Worked as a therapy dog and transformed a few lives. Better than a lot of us can do. Never aggressive, would not even defend herself when attacked, but, as a rather odd situation revealed, would defend her human without hesitation.

Believe it or not, Rotties are very good dogs. We had a Rotty but she passed away. However, the neighborhood children, who were very afraid of dogs, would come by our house and take our dog for walks. Our daughter would climb all over our dog and not one time did the dog even acted like she wanted to become aggressive toward her. Our dog would lay outside our daughters bedroom, and when she started crying would come running into me and my wife's bedroom and nudge us with her nose until one of us would wake up an check on our daughter. Our dog died when our daughter was two years old.
