Today we're trying to put together a unified theory of John McCain's speech-making crappiness.

My initial theory was that if you look at the most outstanding instances of McCain's awkward, cringe-inducing delivery they're chiefly about domestic issues -- economy and culture war stuff -- that McCain doesn't really care about. When he's talking about the thing he's jazzed up about -- being right about the surge -- his delivery is much more straightforward. A lot of this stuff is also packaged as attacks on Obama, as Ben pointed out.

But then David pointed out that the thing that really comes through to him about McCain's delivery is a sense of entitlement. 'I'm a Senator and I'm John McCain so just get on with it and make me president."

Sort of like he's not disciplined enough to learn to deliver his prefab lines or convincingly pretend he believes or cares about them. I hadn't thought about it quite like this before. But this has the ring of truth to me. And perhaps the two meld together. McCain is big on Iraq and wants to talk about that. But the other stuff is mainly stuff he's changed positions on anyway and doesn't particularly care about. So he just goes through the motions.

Part of the reason may be that, despite a few of his claims to the contrary of late, I don't think McCain has had many contested races in his political career. I don't know exactly how his first election to the House went. But since he's been in, it's been pretty much smooth sailing. So a lot of this is just new to him.

This brings us back to the question of why McCain seems to suck so much this cycle whereas many people -- even political opponents -- thought he was solid as a candidate in 2000. And when I say 'solid', I mean a candidate whose public presentation was a big part of his attraction.

8. yesterday there was an article in the NY Times......

...that said he spoke to an hispanic group in DC where he said he was committed to getting the illegal immigration bill passed that he tried last year. You know, the one where so many republicans are mad about? The one they usually refer to as amnesty....

Now why on earth would he do something so stupid which would keep republicans angry at him now?

It's almost like he doesn't want to be President! Yes, it would encourage hispanic votes (at least among the legal ones) but it angers many more republicans who won't be voting for him!!!

Moving against amnesty now would be the Mother of All Flip-Flops. I mean his name was on the damn bill.

But if you pay attention he only talks about it with Hispanic groups, never in full public site or the national stage anymore.

His problem is now neither the Hispanics or the Republicans believe him anymore.

He appears so tired and old. On occasions we would look at older candidates as the ones with maturity and experience, even a "father figure." And I think that many were counting on contrasting him with Obama's lack of national experience.

Perhaps he was interesting in 2000, did not notice either way. But now one can almost feel sorry for him. Who is dragging this old, tired man around the country? Let him retire and live quietly.

21. You're very right, at least in my experience...

My father -- I actually feel bad for him -- is a solid Hannity watcher, etc., and went on a fifteen minute long rant to me on the phone last week about the Republican Party, McSame and Bush and all the usual suspects saying how he thinks they're TRYING to lose and that Bush is a fucking idiot and McSame isn't even trying to fight. He was LIVID and I thought I'd never see the day he'd call Bush such a thing. :rofl:

Seriously, I was shocked! When I put down the phone I had to make sure I'd hung up properly and just laaaughed, very loudly. :rofl:

P.S. - He's totally resigned himself to Obama being President and he's NOT happy about it. Poor dad. :rofl:
