January 5, 2003--The latest Rasmussen Reports' survey on the Democratic Presidential nominating contest shows that former Vermont Governor Howard Dean still leads the pack. However, his lead is not as solid as it was a month ago.
Among Democrats nationally, 22% prefer Dean while 13% say their choice is Wesley Clark. Joe Lieberman (12%), Dick Gephardt (11%), and John Kerry (10%) were the only other candidates to reach double digits.
In our December survey, Dean was favored by 26% of Democrats. Since that time, he has come under intense criticism from many of his challengers.
While Howard Dean has lost ground since December, the biggest gains belong to John Kerry. In our latest survey, Kerry receives 10% of the Democratic vote. That's up four points from 6% in December.
As Kerry gained four points and Dean lost four points in this survey, all of the other candidates stayed within a point or two of their December totals.
The national telephone survey of 570 Democrats was conducted by Rasmussen Reports January 2-4, 2003. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points, with a 95% level of confidence.
Among self-identified liberal Democrats, Dean attracts 28% of the vote (down from 35% a month ago). Among these liberal Democrats, Gephardt is second at 12%, Kerry and Lieberman each attract 11% and Clark has earned the support of 10%
Among moderate Democrats, Dean attracts 21% while Clark, Lieberman, Gephardt, and Kerry are all in the low double digits
