I honestly don't think its that big of a deal, but I do think that Obama could've responded to the New Yorker cover in a different, and I think better, way. What I would've liked to see him say is something like this:
"The New Yorker's cover was a well-intentioned effort to lampoon the ridiculous attacks that have been levelled at me and at Michelle. However, as has become apparent from the reaction it has drawn, its attempt to make a point may have been obscured by imagery that many understandably find upsetting and offensive and subject to misinterpretation. While I wish that the New Yorker had found a different way to rightfully skewer those who falsely attack my beliefs and patriotism, I defend their right, under the First Amendment, to publish what they choose to publish."
