1. I think Obama has written off Appalachia for the most part.
Luckily, McCain doesn't really have any appeal there either.

in "Appalachia," he'd get criticized for "ignoring his base" or something else.

41. What the fuck does Tennessee have to do with your rant.
We came within 3 percentage points of electing a black man to the Senate.

We weren't on TV saying, "I don't trust him because he's black."

And, to be honest, there has been ONE lousy poll taken in this state since April and it shows McCain at 41 percent and Obama at 36 percent. Hardly a blow-out on McCain's part.

I am betting that seeing the future president of the United States being embraced by the world is going to make all of us feel better. The only ones that have "concerns" are the MSM yappers who are jealous and scared shitless of the end of media consolidation.

6. I hate to say it but that worries me too.
There is a large segment of this country that is very xenophobic and defensive. Back in 2004, there was an effort on the part of Europeans to write letters to Americans to encourage them to vote for John Kerry. It backfired. People who got the letters were pissed. How DARE those furriners tell ME how to vote!

47. Of course it did!
Look, Southerners don't like it when Northerners move down here and tell us what to do. Why would we want someone from another country doing it?

I know it seems irrational on our part, but it's not. Southerners feel like the red-headed step-child even though we've done more to improve race relations in the past 30 years than any other region in the country, yet we're vilified, ridiculed and mocked (look at this board).

This is how the Republicans got a strong-hold in the South over the past 12 years - it wasn't "racism" or "God, gays and guns." It was the fact that Republicans gave the South some lip-service and came out to "protect" us.

Now, you and I both know the Republicans haven't done a damned thing to protect or help the South, but they've made a big SHOW of it and convinced people that they have.

That's why Democrats make few in-roads in the South. They are constantly accusing us of bigotry, backwardism and prudism. Even the most liberal amongst here take offense when we're all stereotyped as that by our party.

The Democrats need to come down here and FDR us and, guess what, more Southern states will turn blue than you could shake a stick at.

71. The "Southern Strategy" was all about racism
You are correct that the South has by no means cornered the market on racism, that's why calling it a Southern Strategy was a bit of a misnomer. The effort was directed at white voters all over the country. And it worked.

I guess they're just doing whatever they can to make this a tight race for the sake of election night ratings, but this is getting absurd.

- Will Obama be too well liked in Europe?
- Is Obama raising too much money?
- Not enough money?
- Why can't Obama take a joke?
- Will Appalachia resent him? -- REALLY? This is what you bring to the conversation Andrea? Really?

68. So, do you
really think Appalachia would embrace Obama, ever? I don't think anyone ever assumed he would pull the racist Appalachian vote --- Yes, I said racist... so shoot me. I don't think anyone else takes it as a negative to have Europeans actually like him. I also don't remember the Appalachian voters ever deciding a presidential race.

73. No, but she said "that are more 'isolationist' and care more about our economy and OUR issues..."
She was the first person who mentioned "Appalachia" while many others have said similar things about it being a possible negative for Americans who are more concerned about our economy than our relations with other countries. I agree that there are racists there (as demonstrated by the number of people in certain states who said they'd never vote for Barack HUSSEIN Obama (among other ignorant things.) He's leading in the polls despite that minority.

75. Not this year, maybe in 2012.
If things get better for these people, who knows. After all, WVA has a Dem governor, 2 Dem senators and went for Clinton in 1996, these people aren't monsters, we shouldn't characterize them as such.

70. Ah, Andrea Mitchell -- so in touch with the heart of Appalachia & the concerns of the common man.
Can't we please just exile these pundits to their own desert island somewhere?

Gaaaaah! :puke:

And the Europe card has to be played carefully-he can look TOO cozy." (Paraphrased, but part of a package that's been running throughout the whole day).

85. Ludicrous

Those in Appalachia are thinking about electing someone who will get us out of Iraq, lower gas prices and solve most of our problems. Traveling to Europe will certainly not make them change their minds.

88. Don't Appalachians (who love Bill Clinton) mind he was loved in Europe?
I'm sure the same people were upset when JFK was greeted by Europeans with cheers... It sounds like Andrea is pissed she couldn't get to go.
