Edwards, Nunn on Obama's Veep List (AP)
Not to say there aren't other names that are also on "the list", obviously.

Edwards, Nunn on Obama's Veep List
Thursday, Jun. 19, 2008 By AP / KEN THOMAS

(WASHINGTON) — Former presidential candidate John Edwards and former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, according to a Michigan Congresswoman.

Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who leads the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), said on Thursday that members of her caucus suggested the two at a meeting with the officials who are vetting candidates. The vetting team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated that the two were on the list.

Cheeks Kilpatrick said, "Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has come up among our CBC members. I reported that to them and they had both of those names on their list."

Kennedy and Holder have been meeting with members of Congress for their input.

49. I could list reasons that could be valid - that's not one
The story was stupid and had absolutely no facts behind it before and still doesn't. This reason would rule out ANY VP because the National Enquirer could write anything about anyone.

We post something like this. Obama will pick who ever he picks.

4. months ago I was saying Nunn or Tom Kaine
I was shot down as being a completely stupid idea.

Nunn had recently been trying to make up for the disaster that was his "dont ask dont tell" policy. I predicted that this was him cleaning out his closet and getting ready for the public light. He has been sen around Obama a lot recently, feeding the speculation.

34. I think the words homosexual, gay, fag, queer have all been given a bad meaning by homophobes.
Teenagers call something stupid by saying "that's gay"

People call each other faggot or queer as a demeaning term.

Homosexual is used as a weapon by the Christian Right to attack us.

I'm a gay, a faggot, a queer, and a homosexual. And boy, I'm damn proud.

I cringe when I see someone taking these words and turning them into hateful words.

But to the original point, Nunn would be a HORRIBLE pick for Obama.

46. I agree on both issues
good description of what people do to 'words' to manipulate and make them sound bad.

And Nunn would be a horrible pick... To think he'd not pick Clark, if he didn't want to take a Senator, or even Richardson, and instead pick Nunn would leave a lot of us shaking our head - so I don't see it.

take care!

Exactly how can he please everybody? Especially Liberals, who somehow take a perverse delight in always being pissed off about something or at someone.

24. No matter what, somebody is going to be pissed.
For instance, if Obama were to pick a senator who just voted for FISA--people here would go nuts. I still contend there are many here who are not happy unless they are unhappy about something.

14. It will be a governor now
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 05:35 PM by ram2008
His foreign trip is all he needed for his foreign policy credentials. He looked very presidential, was well received by the troops, and has shown that he can communicate well with other leaders.

Now I think he goes with a governor to reinforce his message of change, and to add to the executive experience angle. The governor won't overshadow Obama but will be consistent with his message of post-partisanship.

My guess:

1) Tim Kaine - Catholic, Fluent Spanish speaker, swing state governor

2)Schweitzer- Honestly I never thought he would be a contender but I can see it now. He's got the populist appeal look to him and his background is similar. Pro gun rights, Big fighter against REAL ID both stances which will help with independents and the working class. One of the highest if not the highest approval ratings of all governors.

3)Sebelius- Very calm, good supplement to Obama, they look great together on stage. He knows her well and they seem to be very close. Strong on economics. Red-State Governor.I know some say that we want to reach out to Hillary supporters that haven't come on-board and that picking Sebelius would offend them, but if they haven't come yet they never will.

If he goes with a Senator it will be Bayh or Biden.

Wild Card: Bloomberg

Edit: Woops I replied to the wrong part, meant to reply to thread not you. Gah I always make that mistake. Oh well.

16. I voted for Kaine when I still lived in VA, but no way should he be picked imo
He's anti choice and anti-GLBT rights, although he is definitely not a hypocrite, as he's also anti DP. However, I don't think someone decently conservative on certain civil rights issues should be chosen as VP.

29. Is Kaine really anti-choice?
From what I've read he says he personally does not like abortion (which is a great way to score points with pro-lifers and not make any actual policy changes). He also supported a ban on late term abortions (unfortunately he used the term "partial-birth") with an exception for life and health of the mother which last I checked is the same position is Clinton and Obama.

Basically, I think Tim Kaine is about the same on abortion as most Democrats but talks like he's Governor of Virginia and not Governor of Massachusetts. Politically that's a good thing.

26. I agree - it's gonna be a governor, and...
even Edwards has a decent shot - he certainly was an incredible and furious-for-the-worker speaker this election cycle! I know all about why he won't be, but he's still a possibility, I still think anyone not a senator has a shot - Clark, Edwards, Nunn, Richardson, Sebelius - and if he doesn't pick a senator (like BIDEN or WEBB), then he can say "we need Hillary in the senate to preserve the Democratic majority", while selecting a governor like Sebelius - although I believe a more tenacious fighter for Barack would be Richardson, Clark, or Edwards.

37. Sam Nunn was loved by all in Georgia, including me.
If Sam Nunn is "Mr. don't Dsk Don't Tell then that puts him on the same level as Bill Clinton, and that I could deal with. Odds are that he has changed some in the 16 years since Clinton was elected, so I wouldn't get his current position before judging him so harshly. Plus it would guarantee a GA win.

Sam Nunn - too old. And by "old" I don't mean just his chronological age, but also the bigotry that was "acceptable" in the "old South" but is not tolerated now. If he's got some relevant advice about how to campaign in Georgia or whatever, fine. But VP? I think not.

40. I have a great deal of respect and enthusiasm for John Edwards and
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 09:33 PM by Old Crusoe
could be extremely pleased with a pro-Labor vice president, but am personally and politically quite cool to Sam Nunn.

I don't want to slam Nunn for sport. He's a smart guy and perhaps I am not a good prognosticator of political futures anyway, but I've long felt that Bill Clinton was wise to pass Nunn up for Sec. of Defense.

Nunn wanted that job real, real badly, and it went to Les Aspin of Wisconsin, later to Bill Cohen. I prefered either to Nunn.

Nunn to me is a man who knows how to work the levers of power and knows who to help him do that. He's a linear android with no sense of poetry to him at all. Ironically, Bill Cohen did write poetry. I don't think it was the best poetry ever, but hell, it wasn't bad.

Nunn represents to me the hyper-suburban country-club deal-brokering golf-buddy strain of power in the post-Nixon South. I consider him more a Nixon Republican who has taken the time to bathe and shave and look dapper for the press but in many other significant ways he is not an evolved Democrat.

Like him or not, Bill Clinton is at least as smart as Nunn and did evolve. His detractors, myself among them, felt he betrayed his own evolution for political expediency more than he needed to, but in any case, as Southern post-Nixon Democrats go, I'd take Clinton's model on power over Nunn's any day.

Certainly I'd take Jimmy Carter's post-Carter international profile any day over the Nunn model of "public" service.

And absolutely John Edwards' model, who along with Elizabeth, sang the anthem of Labor and health care in the South long before he reached the national stage.

There is also the Wes Clark model -- quite an evolved choice over someone like Nunn, IMO.

Even the Don Siegelman model -- not exactly a firebrand liberal but a great deal more dutiful in public service than Nunn -- plus, how bad could you be if your enemies include Karl Rove?

Bill Moyers is from Texas and is a Baptist minister to boot. Nunn never got anywhere close to Moyers, Clinton, Carter, Edwards, Clark, or even Siegelman, and countless others. He's old school and he's spirit-crushingly linear.

I don't question this news source that Nunn is on the list of vetted possible nominees, but just as a personal take, I'd prefer that Obama choose almost any other Democrat alive.
