The recent polls are showing McCain closing in. It's unsettling. I've seen the worry here at DU recently. It is unsettling, but only until you ask one question: Why?
The answer is that McCain has been spending money at an unprecedented rate trying to grab back control of former GOP states. He is throwing tons of money on ads while Obama is getting massive free press due to an increadibly well-run campaign. McCain is being forced to spend money to recover lost ground. What lost ground you might ask?
We still have the following states as PICK-UPS from 2004: CO IN IA MT NV NM
McCain has to win *all* of them back.
Also, the following states are complete TIES: ND, MO, VA, and FL!
Those are some serious red states gone neutral. Again, McCain can not lose FL or he is done. He also must win the other ties.
Meanwhile, Obama has been holding back, saving his money, waiting for the right timing. They have yet to begin their ad-blitz, which, in my humble opinion is better saved for after labor day.
Do not become overly worried. But do not get comfortable either. Stay vigilant. Stay active. Keep spreading the good news about Obama's presidency. And keep exposing the truth about McCain. It won't be easy to get Obama elected. But we can certainly feel good about the current progress and the way the campaign has been run.
