TNR article on Dean House Parties

Thought people would be interested. To be honest, 30-40 people is a good showing for a house party and I think the author misses on the point that exposure is everything and these events increase the chances of "hits" for new hard core supporters.

1. TNR has their long knives sharpened for Dean

Dean is not my #1 guy, but TNR has made it quite obvious that they have something against him. While some may be able to complain with some merit that The Nation has become a Dean booster, TNR has gone out of their way to marginalize him. Hell, one of their staffers is so obsessed that he started an "anti-Dean" blog!

Then again, this is the magazine whose editor, Peter Beinhart, went so far as to say that they would never cease in their championing of democracy -- even if it were "at the point of a gun".

How one can "impose" democracy at the point of a gun is completely beyond me. :eyes:

2. Being popular and beloved by the people

can be challenging. So many jealous competitors.

7. I Get the Feeling

They don't like the curtain being lifted. The passage about the House Party instructions was interesting. Heavy handed? Yeah, maybe. Does traditional fund-raising not have its own set of rules and expectations? Most people who are new to campaigning and/or fundraising would be oblivious to those rules.

3. I have mixed feelings about this magazine.

I don't necessarily see it as being as bad as, say, National Review, but I often feel that there is ideological kinship going on here. The differences with neo-conservatism on certain issues is pretty nuanced, in my opinion. Take these two journals, and you have a sort of bipartisan ideological establishment for "globalism" and Iraq-type adventures.

4. TNR likes DLC

My impression is that the TNR is a magazine for and by centrist Democrats. They've been consistent about that for at least the last 12 years, as far as I can tell. In '92, they trumpeted Bill Clinton early on. The turning point for them was Clinton's speech at Notre Dame, where he talked about the importance of religion in his life (sincerely). Bill Clinton and Tony Blair are their models of good politicians. Current issue - "Howard Dean's Religion Problem".

I have always been impressed that TNR seems to be about 1 week ahead of the news media. I don't think it is a coincidence. I think a lot of very influential people read it weekly.

Now, if you aren't a 'third way' Democrat ('tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime', you probably won't like TNR. And yes, they don't like HD. They are going to write anti-HD articles until the primaries are over. But don't they have that right?
