CNN: McCain Says He Can Support Timetable and that Saddam Was "Bent on Getting WMDs"

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain could support a 16-month timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, he told CNN's Larry King Monday night.

But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said he would only do that if military chiefs deemed the "conditions on the ground" safe enough.

Speaking from Bakersfield, California, the Arizona senator said he would not stick to a "hard and firm date" suggested by Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

"Now whether that fits into 16 months or not, or one month, or whatever, the point is it's got to be conditions-based," he added, saying that's the point Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, "is trying to get over as we go into this political season."

Asked whether he would support an invasion of Iraq again, McCain responded: "The fact that Saddam Hussein was bent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction. ... I think we did the right thing."

So now he supports a timetable. And he is still on this whole Saddam with WMDs thing. He is a joke.

1. I'm embarrased that he's even considered
a viable candidate after 8 years of Bush. We can't afford another idiot in office. It's just unbelievable.

3. Exactly.
McCain fails to understand that Petraus is just the commander of a particular theater, and the president is the Commander in CHIEF, meaning, the TOP DOG, the biggest Commander, the commander over all the other commanders in the field.

This is what Obama was getting at during his press conference last week. Although he understands where Petraus is coming from, he has OTHER considerations that he must take into account since he is the CHIEF commander. He commands not only Iraq, but Afghanistan and other areas in the world.

McCain is acting like Private Gump. How is the Commander in Chief taking orders from a lesser commander? He dumb.

5. I am confused. 1) He said timetable is good on CNN, 2) denied saying that on ABC, 3) now he
supports it with conditions (on CNN)! He can't makeup his minds!

The truth is he does not want to leave Iraq for some reasons that is not clear to me.

10. That's the real problem.
If you know your opponent doesn't mind when you flip flop, then it's smart to flip flop whenever doing so is convenient.

11. I've Seen Plenty of Obama Press Releases On The Flip Flops
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 11:52 AM by Median Democrat
However, if no media outlet publishes this, it does not matter. In contrast, every story about Obama has an obligatory quote from a McCain press release.

Look at all the stories reporting the latest press releases from the McCain camp. However, despite the issuance of press releases by the Obama camp, the MSM simply ignores them.
