Clinton: Obama needs 'filibuster-proof Senate'

Clinton, emerging from relative silence, sends out an email to the list of Chuck Schumer's DSCC:

Under the heading, "Our commitment to Barack," she writes:

The commitment you and I and thousands of others have made to helping Barack Obama win on November 4th means more than making sure he defeats John McCain.

In these last 100 days before the election, let's pour ourselves - each and every one of us, heart and soul - into electing Barack Obama and giving him a filibuster-proof Senate, ready, willing and able to create the authentic change America is yearning for.

Click here to make a contribution of $10, or more. Your gift today will be matched dollar-for-dollar, making an even bigger difference in our campaign to give Barack Obama a filibuster-proof Senate.

Full email after the jump.

Subject: Our commitment to Barack

Dear John,

The commitment you and I and thousands of others have made to helping Barack Obama win on November 4th means more than making sure he defeats John McCain.

A genuine 2008 victory also has to include putting an end to Republican obstructionism in the Senate.

The current GOP Senate minority has set an all-time record: using the filibuster more often than at any time in history. On more than 80 different occasions, they have blocked progress on ending the war, stymied efforts to rebuild our economy, impeded forward movement on health care, or stood in our way on a whole host of other issues.

In these last 100 days before the election, let's pour ourselves - each and every one of us, heart and soul - into electing Barack Obama and giving him a filibuster-proof Senate, ready, willing and able to create the authentic change America is yearning for.

To bring that sweeping change to our country, we have to help the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raise $1,133,768 before July 31st. It will take the combined action of thousands of committed Democrats, and I'm asking you to be a part of this campaign.

There is only 1 day left before the deadline, and every gift - no matter how small - brings us ever closer to our objective. Act now, and your personal donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Even as little $10 makes a big difference when it has double the impact.

Here is our most immediate task: the step we have to take right now to keep our hopes for a filibuster-proof Senate is within reach.

The DSCC is deeply involved in 11 competitive Senate races in states across the country. That's twice as many pick-up opportunities as in 2006, and there are another 5 states on the horizon. That means that over the final 100 days of our drive to victory, we'll need to respond to twice as many attack ads, mobilize twice as many campaign volunteers, and make face-to-face contact with twice as many undecided voters. To succeed, we'll need help from a massive wave of Democratic activists. Even a small contribution - $10 or more - makes you part of our growing strength.

What you do now could set the stage for an enormous era of progress for our nation - progress that Barack Obama can lead us towards - and that a shrinking Republican minority in the Senate will be powerless to stop.

We may never have an opportunity like the one we have right in front of us over these next 100 days. Please, join the thousands of Democrats acting now to support the DSCC's final 100 days of effort in the closest Senate races in the nation.

Thanks for standing with us,

Hillary

4. Well, if that is what we need,
Then Schumer is not the man to do it. He recruits DLC types with DSCC money, so when they get in office, they vote with Republicans on big issues.

A filibuster proof majority actually means real Democrats have to fill those seats. Chuck's choices will only hand their votes to the Republicans so they don;t look too "liberal".

5. Well, hate to break it to ya, but "DLC types" can win where more liberal-leaning candidates cannot
Look at the `06 Senate pickups in Virginia, Missouri, etc... As much as I love and admire the guy, we're not gonna win those kinds of seats by running Ted Kennedy-like candidates.

I find it interesting that everyone assumes that there are only two types of Democrats, liberals and blue dogs. There are not. You are arguing through the lens of a false dichotomy.

DLC types have entrenched themselves in liberal districts as well as conservative. Conservative districts have elected non-DLC Democrats many times. There is nothing about the DLC part that makes a candidate more palatable to the people...often the people have no idea they are voting in a traitor. All they see is "Democrat". It's OUR job to make sure they are real Democrats.

I would imagine populists could clean the clocks of Republicans in red districts, but since Schumer doesn't even consider populists, either, we are stuck with the DLC types and their pro-corporate, pro-Repubican ways.

But still, if we have the magical 60 Democrats, we do NOT have the magical 60 votes. For every DLCer, we need one more traditional Democrat becuase I promise you that the DLCers will jump ship so as to not be perceived as being "too liberal". In reality, they jump ship because they have the same paymasters as the Republicans.

6. Ms. Clinton, you're absolutely right.
And I'd like you to be the Majority Leader of that Senate. Up for it?
