OK, we're not going to get an impeachment. We're not even going to see Rove hauled up on contempt charges. We know, we know, Nancy. These actions would only distract public attention from the really bad job the Republicans are doing with the economy and the war and stuff like that. That's the only way to guarantee a win in the Presidential race and to pick up supermajorities in Congress. Ya, sure, as they say in my neck of the woods.
So we rank and file "purists," we unwashed heathens who are really too simple to "get it" about Realpolitik are pretty much powerless. We can't force you to start impeachment proceedings. We can't force you to hold a full-house vote to give KKKarl a hotfoot. We can yell, we can scream, we can demonstrate, we can camp on your lawn, but we can't redirect your supposedly pragmatic focus onto our issues.
Let me tell you this. First, I will once more vote Democratic this fall. Yeah. Once more for the full ticket. But two things had Goddam well better happen after I do that. First, you better get your supermajority after casting away your principles to buy it.
And second, once you get a controlling grip on the Executive and Legislative branches, you had better start using that power fast. Get us out of the war. Institute a sane and progressive energy and environmental policy. Give us a good, cost-efficient and effective universal healthcare system. Start putting our misappropriated rights and powers back where they belong. Reclaim for Congress that which belongs rightly to them, and even more importantly, take action to return our stolen individual rights to us. End unwarranted (literally and figuratively) invasions of privacy. End the insane drug war. Heal our military and prune it back to a rational size--a size appropriate for a democracy with legitimate interests of self-defense, not a grotesque size designed for global imperialism.
If you can deliver on these things, then I will admit you were right. Indeed, given a choice between revenge on our tormentors of the last eight years on the one hand, or a progressive and humane America on the other, I will forego--perhaps not gladly, but forego nevertheless--the fulfillment of any desire to see these criminals brought to justice and instead content myself with spending my declining years in a land that has at last grown up to be all that its founders had hoped for it.
It's your game, Nancy. You claim you're playing it this way for us. Prove it.
