Notice to Nancy Pelosi
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 10:22 PM by Jackpine Radical
OK, we're not going to get an impeachment. We're not even going to see Rove hauled up on contempt charges. We know, we know, Nancy. These actions would only distract public attention from the really bad job the Republicans are doing with the economy and the war and stuff like that. That's the only way to guarantee a win in the Presidential race and to pick up supermajorities in Congress. Ya, sure, as they say in my neck of the woods.

So we rank and file "purists," we unwashed heathens who are really too simple to "get it" about Realpolitik are pretty much powerless. We can't force you to start impeachment proceedings. We can't force you to hold a full-house vote to give KKKarl a hotfoot. We can yell, we can scream, we can demonstrate, we can camp on your lawn, but we can't redirect your supposedly pragmatic focus onto our issues.

Let me tell you this. First, I will once more vote Democratic this fall. Yeah. Once more for the full ticket. But two things had Goddam well better happen after I do that. First, you better get your supermajority after casting away your principles to buy it.

And second, once you get a controlling grip on the Executive and Legislative branches, you had better start using that power fast. Get us out of the war. Institute a sane and progressive energy and environmental policy. Give us a good, cost-efficient and effective universal healthcare system. Start putting our misappropriated rights and powers back where they belong. Reclaim for Congress that which belongs rightly to them, and even more importantly, take action to return our stolen individual rights to us. End unwarranted (literally and figuratively) invasions of privacy. End the insane drug war. Heal our military and prune it back to a rational size--a size appropriate for a democracy with legitimate interests of self-defense, not a grotesque size designed for global imperialism.

If you can deliver on these things, then I will admit you were right. Indeed, given a choice between revenge on our tormentors of the last eight years on the one hand, or a progressive and humane America on the other, I will forego--perhaps not gladly, but forego nevertheless--the fulfillment of any desire to see these criminals brought to justice and instead content myself with spending my declining years in a land that has at last grown up to be all that its founders had hoped for it.

It's your game, Nancy. You claim you're playing it this way for us. Prove it.

4. You have no other place to go. In her eyes, you're a chump.
Not that I'm calling you a chump. I agree with you generally.

However, I disagree about letting these criminals off in favor of a retaking of power.

They MUST be brought to justice. The non-prosecution of Watergate and Iran-Contra allowed this moment to happen...if left unpunished/unchecked, I fear for the next round of fascist republican rule.

5. There comes a point when I'll vote selectively. I'll always vote for Feingold, but
the rest of my ballot might take on a distinctly green tinge. If the DLC is gonna keep laying to right field, I don't see the point in playing with them.

17. I think Pelosi's refusal to impeach
borders on aiding and abetting. I'm sick of her. She acts and sounds like a complete idiot.

11. I can't for the life of me wrap my head around her "What crimes?" line.
If the everyday actions of the Bush Regime don't constitute high crimes and misdemeanors, God knows what would!

12. Do the Democrats need a supermajority if Obama wins?
I thought that the only advantage of 67 over 51 votes was that it could override a veto, and if the Democrats control the White House surely that won't be relevant.

13. she can't do all those things
the Speaker is a powerful position, but your list of demands will take decades of progress, and tons of work, including by us. Educating people and changing their minds.

15. I was granting myself a bit of rhetorical license.
I'm really talking about a Democratic government, as personified by her. My real condern is a sense that the Democratic Party has largely been taken over by a corporatist cabal. a group in league with the same unholy forces that finance and drive the machinery of the Republican Party. (I don't include the the Religious Wrong in that group, by the way. The fundamentalist flocks are essentially delusional "useful fools" for the right, whose votes are routinely delivered to the Republicans by their psychopathic leadership.)

holding the bush criminals AND their collaborators completely and thoroughly accountable is issue #1 for me. failure to pursue the criminals is a deal-breaker on all levels.
