I honestly didn't know if he would be able to live up to the hype. They built the convention to such a crescendo that I didn't know if it was possible for Obama to deliver the goods. But boy oh boy did he deliver. This wasn't just a homerun or a grand slam, this was the grand slam from the natural. This will now be known as THE speech. I've never seen anything like it before and it will be hard to top. On MSNBC Pat Buchanan was GUSHING. They couldn't shut him up, literally. They had to cut him off. Chris Matthews looked positively post coital. If you say anything bad about this speech you look foolish, and childish and petty.
Everything was perfect, from the whole convention building up to it, to the wise move to have it at Mile High, to it being on the anniversary of MLK's historic speech. And then, the speech itself was, quite simply, a masterpiece delivered by a master. It hit all the right notes, it tugged all the right strings and made all the right attacks and did it in a way that was so smooth and precise and understandable that it's hard to comprehend how Obama did it so masterfully.
Frankly, McCain is cornered. Because of the timing, people will go into Labor day weekend talking about this speech at their BBQ's all weekend. The attacks from Obama will now come hard, fast furious and non-stop.
Oh, and the "temperament" issue is OUT there and I can't tell you how BRILLIANT it was of Obama to frame it the way he did. Because of McCain's attacks on Obama, Obama was able to use an amazing piece of political and rhetorical jujitsu and turn the question of judgment into a question not JUST of judgment but also of TEMPERAMENT.
So, McCain, the prickly candidate will now be forced to answer questions about his temperament and boy will THAT piss him off.
I really think there's no turning back for Obama now. It's up and away from this point forward. The tsunami is coming for Republicans and the will be lucky if they don't get washed away into the dustbin of history.
