and if true, this would be a sad commentary on the state of the press. Is it possible that the Enquirer and such rags are the only refuge available to those who, in their souls, desire to be investigative reporters? Has the spirit of Murrow and Mencken, the spirit that quided Bernstein and Woodward, taken them there? They got the Edwards story right ... a bizarre twist of fate. If they are right about this ...

We may be seeing the transformation of the Enquirer into the last bastion of investigative reporting. How pathetic is that?

John McCain's presidential campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the National Enquirer over a print edition story the tabloid ran today alleging that Gov. Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.
