New GOP narrative: Sarah Palin "Winged" Her Speech Because of "Broken" Teleprompter

http://www.redstate.com/diaries/redstate/2008/sep/04/breaking-sarah-palin-winged-her-speech-bec/

Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.

According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory , to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/09/04/palins-teleprompter-troubles/

When her moment on the national stage arrived last night, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had more to contend with than just nerves. The TelePrompTer that fed her the speech malfunctioned, scrolling too quickly through applause, two senior Republican officials said today.

The result was that the first two lines of each paragraph had already scrolled up by the time she was to deliver them, they said. She had a paper copy of the speech before her, but that version was not the final text.

At one point, crowd signs blocked the TelePrompTer altogether, one official said, prompting her to ad lib one of her best lines of the night: “You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”

It called to mind President Bill Clinton’s 1993 health care address before Congress. When he began speaking, the TelePrompTer was loaded with a previous speech. It took several minutes to get the right speech up, and Clinton spoke from memory.

The teleprompter did not break

Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not "wing it."

This claim has been picked up on Drudge and could quickly enter into the insta-mythmaking about a speech that need not be embroidered.

Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention-planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.

20. I saw it, too. And the video is probablty already up on C-SPAN.
I guess they figure it doesn't matter if there is evidence to the contrary; if they repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.

6. When she was talking about foreign policy and energy independence.
Y'know, the more complicated issues...

It was obvious to me that she was just reading the speech, and had no idea what she was saying.

8. Well, you know how it is for MAJOR PARTY CONVENTIONS...
...they just use any old equipment; no one bothers to ensure it's in perfect working order, and no one makes any contingency plans in case something does go wrong. Because, hey, it's no big deal to the GOP if someone wanders off-message during a major speech at a major event.

Give 'em a break, huh?

credulously,
Bright

(to read the teleprompter) and I couldn't catch it ...

And then, on the wide shots, I went looking for where a teleprompter was ... and I couldn't see it.

Did anybody else see one?

I think its apparent she may have ad-libbed a line or two but she certainly didn't have it memorized. It was clear she was reading on anything tough.

17. They're trying to out-Clinton Bill Clinton
I remember hearing once about a Bill Clinton speech...he was speaking off his teleprompter when it died. Crashed or something...but anyway, it went to black screen. Clinton spoke off the cuff, intelligently, for 45 minutes.

22. If this were true, it would have been a major embarrassment
The GOP can't even find somebody competent to run a teleprompter.
