DAYTON, Ohio (AFP) - Democrat Barack Obama Tuesday dismissed a stunning surge in the polls by his Republican White House rivals as his aides savaged "lies" by John McCain and Sarah Palin on the campaign trail.
Battling to refocus attention on the war in Iraq, failing schools and the faltering US economy, Obama said the Republicans offered nothing new from the past eight years under the unpopular President George W. Bush.

"I just think that the notion that people are swinging back and forth in the span of a few weeks, or a few days, this wildly, generally isn't borne out," Obama told reporters here.

Gallup's latest tracking survey had McCain on 49 percent and Obama on 44, with pollsters noting a major shift by white women and independent voters to the Republican ticket since the socially conservative Palin signed on.
