Political donations gurus, will Obama's ties to Fannie, Freddie be made an issue?
I read an AP story today (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080910/ma_kerry_mortgage_giants.html?.v=1) that said Obama had the third highest campaign contribution totals from the two mortgage buyers. Chris Dodd was #1, John Kerry #2 (the story is actually about Kerry).

Will this have any impact? If the Republicans try to use it, will it even resonate?

6. Thanks for considering the content of the post...
and realizing that there actually are some Democrats working in the financial services industry that have to deal with these kinds of questions from their Pub co-workers. Sheesh.

You know, < 1000 posts does not always equal Freeper.

27. Seriously, you're wrong on this.
I know that's hard to believe, but you are.

Nice use of Fail posters, though. Are you going to come with some lolcats next?

2. Fannie and Freddie aren't "evil", just poorly managed. I don't think it matters.

these two mortgage backers. Many were dupped into loans they couldn't afford anyway. I don't know if they really understand what is happening.. Its actually going to make things better for the housing crisis.. the rate is really low and backed by the govt... Its to McCain's advantage that Bush did this (as a financial specialist I was listening to explained).

Apparently, the credit crunch is now over.. Spend, spend, spend on the backs of our children's children.

5. If they try and use it as an issue, all Obama has to do is point out
that Rick Davis, who runs McShame's campaign, is a lobbyist for Freddie and Fannie. So no, it most likely will NOT be made into an issue.

7. How much did McCain get?
That would probably determine if they want to bring this to light or not.

12. God, I hope so.
But this is a serious question because of the article I linked. NOTE: The article said that Kerry's opponent was already using this against him in his election.

Since we've seen that McCain will stoop to any level, and ride whatever "hot" topic is out there, I am wondering if there are any people with contribution expertise that can help with some talking points, because this is definitely going to get thrown into my face.

16. You know the business and yet you can't research the issue yourself? What company are you with?
I want to make certain I never use their services.

20. OK, I'm sorry,
I thought I'd get a little help. I didn't know I had stepped into kiddie time.

Any adult boards to recommend?

FACT: Kerry's opponent is using this information against him.
FACT: (at least according to the article) Obama received the third most money from Fannie/Freddie in some unspecified time, just behind Kerry.
FACT: I am a Democrat working in an industry dominated by Republicans. I posted this thread for selfish reasons (ie, responding to constant harassment from co-workers...I'm not "on the fence" or whatever)

26. If you are in the biz, why don't you research it yourself and report back?
I'm a littlce concerned myself--about who you may work for; I don't think I care to use their services (and a FICO would want my family, oh, yes indeed).

28. I'm in the finacial services business, not the political contributions business.
I can tell you exactly what Fannie and Freddie do, but not who they have to and when, much less why (I've already been to opensecrets.org, btw).

Your concern is noted...way to get out in front of it.

19. I don't know where they got their numbers, but when I saw Obama's
name with so much money and he has only been there since 2006 it made me wonder...then I went to Open Secrets.org and there was nothing like the numbers listed..and fannie mae did not even appear on their donar lists...here is the link to opensecrets.org: http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/index.php

and here is the link that shows how much Obama has received: http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/recips.php?id=D000000163&party=D&chamber=S&type=P&cycle=2008

Seems Obama received $18,000+ in the 2008 cycle and nothing in 2006

23. THANK YOU
I did the exact same thing and also noticed a large discrepancy. It also seems very odd that his total is so high when the other two are such senior Senators. I wonder if they are including Illinois Senate?

I wonder if it was actually an error?
