McCain rips Obama over Streisand fundraiser

Posted: 04:48 PM ET

From CNN's Chris Welch and Rebecca Sinderbrand

(CNN) – As he heads off to a high-dollar fundraiser featuring Barbara Streisand, Barack Obama is hoping the politically-active singer can help him capture the White House.

So is John McCain.

Speaking at a campaign event in the working-class Democratic stronghold of Youngstown, Ohio, the Republican presidential nominee said Obama “talks a tough game on the financial crisis, but the facts tell a different story.

“…He put Fannie Mae’s CEO, who helped create this problem in charge, of finding his vice president. That’s not change — that’s what’s broken in Washington,” said McCain.

“Talk about siding with the people, siding with the people just before he flew off to Hollywood for a fundraiser with Barbra Streisand and his celebrity friends,” he said. “Let me tell you my friends, theres no place I’d rather be than here with the working men and women of Ohio.”

Streisand, a staunch Democrat, is scheduled to perform at a $28,500 a head Obama fundraiser Tuesday night in Beverly Hills, California.

Palin Fundraises With Ohio CEO Of Company Behind Job Losses

September 16,2008 01:05 PM

This is not, generally, the message you want to send as the financial markets collapse and the country's economic concerns are at the forefront of the political dialogue.

On Monday, Sarah Palin hosted a major fundraiser on behalf of John McCain in Canton, Ohio. The event, which raised $1 million, was organized by W.J. "Tim" Timken Jr., a major Republican figure in the state.

Timken's company, additionally, is a toxic figure within Ohio's working class community. Only four years ago, Timken Co -- one of the largest manufacturers of tapered roller and needle bearings in the country -- was responsible for job losses in one of the hardest economically hit areas in the United States: Stark County, Ohio.

"He is the stereotypical Republican," said Johnnie Maier, chairman of the Stark County Democrats. "In John McCain's book, Tim Timken makes more than $5 million so he is not middle class... They made $1 million in a in a county where the private sector and the public sector are laying off people everywhere because people are broke."

In the 2004 campaign, Timken Co. found itself at the center of a provincial but significant political battle. A year and a half before that election, President Bush visited a Timkin plant to tout the trickle down effects of his tax cut policies. "The future of this company is bright, and therefore, the future of employment is bright for the families that work here," he declared.

3. Damn, the problem is that...
Barbara Streisand = "Hollywood liberal elitist"
and W.J. "Tim" Timken Jr. =

And they know it. So they know they can get away with it.

13. Not in Ohio, they can't get away with it
At least they shouldn't be able to. This is ammo for ads targeted at Ohio.

26. Ah, I see. I didn't know he was well known there.
I live only a few miles from Babs so my perspective is skewed by the sun, the lattes, and the mandatory Streisand/Geffen communist indoctrination meetings. :P

4. If some high profile celebrity of Streisand's caliber were
to offer to help McCain with a fundraiser, he or she wouldn't have to ask twice. Unfortunately for McCain, few celebs want anything to do with him or his politics. Sour grapes much?

7. Lying AGAIN...
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 07:33 PM by silverweb
"He put Fannie Mae’s CEO, who helped create this problem in charge, of finding his vice president. That’s not change — that’s what’s broken in Washington," said McCain.

Eric Holder Jim Johnson, one of three members of Obama's VP committee. He the former CEO of Fannie Mae and served during the Clinton Administration -- when Fannie Mae was solvent, before the mortgage industry started pushing high-risk loans, and we ended up with a budget surplus.

McSame = LIAR.

On Edit: Name mixup... wrong committee member named in my original post, now corrected. But McSame is still lying.

14. I think you mean Jim Johnson
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 06:53 PM by blogslut
Eric Holder was the temporary Attorney General who filled in the position until Ashcroft was confirmed.

Jim Johnson was once CEO of Fannie Mae - 1991 to 1998. He stepped down from Obama's VP vetting committee in June of this year.

But yes, McSame is playing the lie/conflation game again.

15. Didn't McCain do a rally with a Puerto Rican rap star?
So, yeah.

McCain’s Yankee Doodle Daddy

Elizabeth Holmes reports from Phoenix on the presidential race.

John McCain made it clear who his daddy was Monday morning.

Daddy Yankee, the hip-hop star from Puerto Rico, endorsed the Republican candidate Monday morning. Wearing black aviator shades in the library of Central High School here, Daddy Yankee said, “I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation…He’s been a fighter for the Hispanic community.”

The students gathered for the event clearly were not told ahead of time that Daddy Yankee was part of the deal. As the Latin-Grammy-winning recording artist walked into the room, the girls shrieked and screamed, grabbed each other by the hands and gasped at the sight of him. One girl fanned the tears from her eyes.

“I just wanna say thank you, Daddy Yankee,” McCain said.

22. mccain is soooo jealous up past his blinking eyeballs.
mccain goes waaaaaaaaaay back bitchin' about Barbra. When he was on SNL back in the day he said something like she should just sing and leave the politics to them.

Who would take mccain's advice? Certainly not Barbra Streisand.
