Kerry: I'll back Dean if he gets Dem nod

WASHINGTON - Sen. John F. Kerry has pledged to back rival Howard Dean if he is the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, but his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, last night said she isn't so sure.

``I don't know Governor Dean,'' Heinz Kerry said in a joint interview with her husband on CNN. ``I'd have to have a big talk with him about a lot of subjects.''

However, Heinz Kerry said she hoped to meet with Dean's wife, Judith Steinberg Dean, a doctor who shuns the public spotlight, adding, ``I do a lot of work in health, and I'm jealous of her for doing the work she does.''

Heinz Kerry, whose blunt comments and candor have exasperated the Kerry camp at times, said no one has sought to silence her on the campaign trail.

``No, I've never been muzzled,'' she said. ``It's the one thing no one could ever do is take my freedom of expression. People in the world die for that freedom, and I rejoice in it. Women with opinions get called opinionated. Men with opinions get called smart or well-informed. If I didn't have opinions about the things I know, I would be a dimwit.''

The Bay State senator - who hopes to vault back into contention against Dean - is showing some signs of life in Iowa, according to some pundits and strategists aligned with rival campaigns.

3. Good for Kerry! But it's sad that this is news. :-(
If ever there were a time to put egos aside for an election, this would be that time.

4. Kerry just risen up a notch in my book
for being brave on this statement, if he does, indeed, back Dean if he gets the nod.

My question for the Kerry supporters - will they follow Kerry's endorsement if it does, indeed, happen?

7. Are they transferable?
Good question.

Considering the vitriol from many Kerry supporters I know, I think this is a valid question.

8. perhaps. But Dean forced them all to raise their hand
last Sunday, by asking that question of who would support whomever the Dem nominee is. They were caught by surprise, they had to raise their hand, or explain why they would not support certain candidates and look small. Hard to back down now...

6. I just love her!
She would liven up this country in ways we can't even imagine. What a dynamic team they would be in the White House! It is like she is the Bill and he is the Hillary. Both intelligent and international in their own ways.

9. I get the feeling Kerry has to fight for Teresa's vote
as hard as anyone else's. She is definately no 'yes woman'. I bet there are some pretty substantive discussions over the breakfast table some mornings...

10. good analogy
i always loved clinton and kerry and both are similar in some ways such as being intelligent , informed etc. but they are still different in ways where you can't really say one reminds you of the other. but i think the teresa compared to bill clinton and john to hillary is a far better one. i think the teresa to bill clinton is especially good as they ARE very international and loved around the world. they could do a lot of good worlwide together.
