SNIP..."Sen. Matthews endorses Dean, says candidate is 'connecting'

By LAURA STOEHR KAMMERER, T&D City Editor

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean chalked up a key endorsement in the Palmetto State Tuesday in his bid for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

Citing Dean's energy and no-nonsense approach, John W. Matthews Jr. of Bowman, an influential black state senator, announced in a conference call that he is supporting the former governor, a switch from his earlier nod to U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

Matthews' endorsement came on the same day Dean was endorsed by former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, a candidate in the 2000 Democratic primary, and less than one month before South Carolina's primary election on Feb. 3.

"I think Howard Dean has the passion and commitment (to be president)," said Matthews, whose Senate district includes portions of Orangeburg, Bamberg, Colleton, Dorchester and Hampton counties...."

2. I know.
And Hollings wasn't an endorsement, but his kind words will make an impression there.

3. Damn media whores!
Didn't they get the memo to the Senator? Dean cannot win in the South. I mean, after all, who knows the Southern political spectrum better -- Senator Matthews, or the K-street crowd? Sheesh. ;)

6. Don't they know
Dean is too conservative, liberal and moderate

Dean is a hothead

Dean is ......

Dean can't win.

Boy if only Bradley and Gore were as smart as the posters on this board and realized Dean is the titanic.

13. Hollings was complimentary as well, though did not endorse.
He said good things about Dean, and said he regretted his own vote for the war.

SNIP..."Howard Dean is right," declared the silver-haired Hollings, launching into a spirited defense of Dean's assertion that Americans are no safer now that Saddam Hussein has been captured. "Saddam wasn't causing anybody any problem. You have some little smart-aleck announcer on television asking, 'Do you think we're better off with Saddam gone?' What else is gone? We have 456 dead; 11,000 maimed for life, and I don't think it was worth it. I had intended to vote against that resolution , but Rummy and Condi Rice and Cheney said you can't wait until the smoking gun is a mushroom cloud. I thought they had some intelligence, that they knew something......"

Two good thoughts from SC.
