Gore and Others Fan Out to Back Dean in Force

LTOONA, Iowa, Jan. 6 — Former Vice President Al Gore is scheduled to spend Friday and Saturday campaigning for Howard Dean in the eastern Iowa cities that gave Mr. Gore an overwhelming victory in the 2000 Democratic caucuses. Then he heads to South Carolina on Dr. Dean's behalf later this month.
Mr. Gore's wife, Tipper, is likely to be the headliner at several events for Dr. Dean next week, Dean campaign aides said. And Mr. Gore's rival in the 2000 primary fight, former Senator Bill Bradley, who made his endorsement official on Tuesday with twin appearances in Des Moines and in Manchester, N.H., has agreed to sign an e-mail solicitation for contributions.
At the same time, Representative Jesse L. Jackson Jr. of Illinois, who is featured in an advertisement for Dr. Dean now running on black radio stations in South Carolina, plans to make several visits to stump for him in that state before its Feb. 3 primary. Representative Robert Menendez of New Jersey will do the same in the heavily Hispanic states of Arizona and New Mexico, which vote the same day.

1. I like endorsements.
This is going to help alot with the electability attacks. It's starting to filter down to the general public.

6. Clark
I don't want to be negative, but I do have to be realistic. I think most of the candidates underestimated Dean and when he gained momentum, they were silent. Dean bolted ahead and most of them- Kerry, Lieberman, Edwards- can't do much about it now. Wesley Clark is gaining ground, often by implying Dean cannot be trusted with national security and other attacks (ie: nasty remark about Dean skiing during Vietnam). He is capitalizing on all of the anti-Dean rhetoric. Basically- if we wait too long, he may make some gains that will be harder to reverse later. In a recent Time CNN poll, Clark is down only 20-24 to Dean nationally. That is a margin of four points. Campaigns are about contrasts. We've been very patient but I think it's important for people to know that a) Clark is making promises that he can't fulfill and b) Clark is the GOP-lite figure that we can't go back to. We tried that in 2002, and the voters told us they didn't want an echo, but a real choice. If we don't stand up to Clark, the lead could slip away before we know it.

But as he gains in the polls, if he has, he will have to under go the same scrutiny that Dean has. It's trail by fire now.

However, I'm very please how well Dean is doing under the media firestorm. He gets better and better under pressure.

1992 Ominous Polls:
A look at the Gallup polls over the past few moths show why Democrats are becoming increasingly nervous about putting Clinton at the head of their ticket.
In a head-to-head match up on March 20, Bush led by only 52-43 percent and Clinton was indeed within striking range. But as the weekly disclosures took their toll during the ensuing primaries, Clinton's margin fell to 54-38 percent on March 29 and then fell further to 54-34 by the beginning of April.
Edit ...
"The negatives are forming on Bill Clinton like a political stalactite, drop by drop," said veteran Democratic consultant David Sawyer. "Each drip leaves a residue that builds on his negative image."

8. I've noticed the same thing too with the attacks.
Clark would almost be better staying a mid-distance second, being the campaign neophyte.

We're great under fire. Must be the civil unions expierence.

9. I am troubled by Bradley's endorsement of Dean
I was a volunteer for Bradley in 2000 because Gore seemed like a loser to Bush in the Election, yet Bradley was a sure loser against Gore due to his own crappy campaign.

I look at Bradley now (as a has-been hiding out in N ew Jersey) and think what a tragic, semi-meaningless shadow of himself he has become.

For the Dean Camp to brag about a candidate who coud not sell himself enough and drop out wimpishly (Bradley fans know this) after New Hampshire and suck the Gore Sphinktor. is a tad predictable.

So Bradley endorses Dean. It's too bad Tsongas is not alive.

It could be a Who's Who of Democrats who lost backing someone who will lose bigtim in the GE.

how sad that you feel compelled to engage in character assassination of a good democrat and good public servant like Bradley. any other campaign would be jumping for joy if they got either one of these endorsements. to me it's stunning that Dean not only got Gore, but one of Gore's bitterest rivals from last time.

yeah, Dean can't possibly win - he's got too many endorsements. he's raising too much money. he's doing too well in the polls.

12. You'd be "troubled" if Jesus endorsed Dean.
I'm sorry you always back losers, but why do you feel compelled to drag down the whole Democratic party with you?

20. The "Washington Insiders" who have been backing Dean
are really big guys in Washington. Let's see, Al Gore,....OOPS, nope, he's not in Washington any more.

Well that damn insider Bradley....ooops, forgot, he's not in Washingotn any more.

Those elected officials who are backing Dean know damn well and good, they will have no power should those who control the DNC win out here. They have not much of anything under the DNC. Why? Because the =Vichy Democrats that run the DNC sold out in 2002 and had their asses handed to them.

We're done losing. We're for a Dean revolution in the party.

21. The power doesn't disappear
Al Gore's family is completely Washington insider and has been for generations. They all retain their connections. Just like Jesse Jr has connections because of his father. There is NO revolution. Every now and again people get their panty's in a bunch at Washington, just like they did when they elected Bill Clinton. He ran as a Washington outsider too you know.

I'll continue to support the candidate who has been fighting for ME for the last 20 years and didn't need to suddenly see the light in an election year.
