How Kerry can beat bush.
Kerry needs to come out and absolutely nail him in the debate with one big knockout punch. No tap-dancing, no deference to the office, no nuance. Call him out and force him to respond. Kerry needs to get an opening and aggressively challenge bush in an almost personal way. Kerry could say something like this:

"Mr. Bush, you have ridiculed me for having said that I first voted for the $87 Billion bill for the war before I voted against it. Well, you did the same thing, except the opposite: you opposed the bill before you supported it. The difference is, the bill I supported would have rolled back your tax cuts for the rich to help pay for the war. But you don't believe the rich should make sacrifices during wartime so you opposed that bill. You decided that supporting the troops was not worth asking the rich to help pay for it.

"You and I both grew up with wealth, but where we differ is that I believe that during wartime all Americans should be asked to sacrifice. You, however, have consistently shown you believe that only the poor and middle class should make sacrifices for their country, sometimes with their lives. You used your position of privilege to avoid serving in Viet Nam while others were sent off to fight and die, and now in Iraq you did not support the bill that would have required the privileged to help sacrifice for the Iraq war.

"You have ridiculed me for asking that the wealthy also make sacrifices during wartime. I have one question for you, Mr. Bush: Why was supporting the troops that you had sent off to war not as important to you as maintaining your tax cuts for the wealthy?"

The dim son cannot think on his feet. If Kerry hits him hard and in such a way that he cannot just spout one of his scripted talking points, bush will have the same glassy-eyed daze he had in the classroom on 9/11 and in a debate when John McCain called him out on the smear campaign he had been running. bush has no idea what to do when he is all on his own and somebody actually stands up to him in a personal way. He will be clearly exposed to the American people as the fraud that he is.

1. I think looking for one big knock out punch is a mistake.
Better to have a number of questions ready for Kerry to ask the coward, similar to the one you wrote. Carefully craft the questions so that they are difficult for shrub to see the traps, yet clear to the majority of undecided viewers.

If Kerry can hit the coward a few of these questions, shrub will surely muff most of them.

3. He did the same thing with Homeland Security in '02
It was more important for him to take away the union protection of 170,000 government employees than to protect his people. What's worse, is he used this to attack his opposition, while being perfectly willing to keep vulnerable unless he could subjugate the very people who protect us.

If you care about our safety, you'll drop everything to make it right, not use our fear to settle a score for your failed Daddy in an unrelated country and further other personal plans.

I like your opening very much. Some specifics might help, too: Junior's personally avoided paying over a quarter million from his tax cuts alone, and he's slashed school lunch programs in the process. He sent troops off without body armor and cut their combat pay on the eve of war.

4. nope, you have to dumb it down for the people, he has to say it in 5
words. simple words, you know like see spot run. the question you have is toooooo long, I mean people will have to think with a question like that. that will automatically turn them off and they will side with bush. why you ask, because the american public doesn't like to feel stupid.
