We'll need all the help we can get. Today I attempted canvassing, and started off by myself for a couple hours until the hail and rain came down. I went back to the Dem HQ to dry out my data sheets, which were soaked, and ended up getting a partner. She was a really nice lady, but she did not know how canvassing for Obama worked, and wanted to just put the doorknob flyer on every house on the street, rather than knocking on doors, asking if the person was supporting Obama on Tuesday, and then circling the appropriate code. I finally had to give up .
She was a great lady, and had come to America from Viet Nam. She told me her village was bombed and only 3 families survived. They moved to the city and that was bomed, too. She was 'drafted' into the army in Viet Nam at 18, but refused to shoot anyone, so they sent her to a prison camp, and she was set for a firing squad in two days. Her dad had buried some gold, and he dug it up, bribed the prison guards and flew her to San Francisco with no contacts or anything. This was 1973. She says she hid for years because she didn't have a visa (just got her citizenship in 2002) and thought Americans were out to kill her since she was Vietnamese. I believe her story. Can you imagine? I had to cut her a break for all that, however, we ended up going back to headquarters without finishing off our packet.
I'm going back tomorrow. Gov. Gregoire and Sen. Patty Murray will be at the Dem Headquarters. I can't miss that, or an opportunity to knock on as many doors as I possibly can until Tuesday night.
