Why are Republicans so confident they'll win?

It's unnerving how confident they are. They seem so sure of it. Don't they look at the polls? Are they that out of touch with reality?

Some asshole posted a political cartoon on the union board at my work, as well as the bulletin board in the break room - basically about the "share the wealth" talking point. What a bunch of BS, you'd think in a union outfit we'd all be on the same page but apparently not. I tore them both down and ripped one to shreds and left it there. Then on the white board I said, "DO NOT POST political propaganda here. Your co-workers do NOT appreciate it. P.S. Whoever posted the last one - better get used to saying 'President Obama.'"

Also, they can't appear as if they've given up or it will hurt them in future election. It will make the party look weak and unwilling to stick it out when things get too rough, they have to pretend everything is great and they "have us where they want us", so they can preserve their parties image.

First anyone involved with the campaign including the paid spokespersons on TV have to keep up a brave front. That goes without saying. The same goes for the right wing media hacks like Joe Scarborough. They are pointing with great enthusiasm at any and all indications that there could be an upset.

Remember 2006 with Karl Rove confidently talking about how Republicans would win because he had THE MATH? He was of course bullshitting. Well what the hell was he going to say. Oh shit! We're doomed! That would have pretty much insured that discouraged Republicans would have spend election day raking leaves and going to the bowling alley--or the shooting range.

Then there are the true believers who listen to this claptrap and swallow it hook line and sinker. They are confident that the great silent majority would never allow someone who they believe to be a socialist and a closet Muslim to become president of the United States.

Hell, who knows, they may be right. Highly unlikely, but you never know until all the votes have been counted.

I mean, seriously. McCain sounds like he has a cold. He and his campaign people have been going for such a long time and they are out of steam. The only way they can keep going is to believe it was not for naught. They have to believe they are going to win. Sure I have been weary of their confidence myself, but I realize there is a certain amount of cognitive dissonance is required to keep going just one more day. And, they could still win. and we all have to remember that. it may be hard, but it is not impossible.
