I'm so sick of hearing talking heads repeat that idiocy that I could vomit blood.

McCain and his heinous minions pushed as far as they thought they could on that front and in as many different subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The ONLY reason they backed off is that it backfired again and again and again. Why? Because they got called on it every damn time they tried. Had they tried to "play the race card" more than they did, they'd be polling even worse, the GOP would be even more permanently doomed (i.e., Whig-ville) than it already is, and even more people would not merely disagree with them but actively and intensely HATE them (a station at which I arrived 40 or so years ago).

"Credit," my ass. The only credit any of those Republican bastards should ever receive is credit for being model prisoners (with no possibility of parole).

On the other hand, I clearly recall McCain referring to Obama as "that one", and I do seem to recall a certain tendency to dog whistle all around the (pssst! he's a negro) the fact that Obama is not as white as he could be.

Palin has been quite clear: he's not one of us. Of course she has also declared the 55-60% of the citizens voting for the african american in the race to also be 'not one of us'.

There is not getting around the fact that McCain and Palin have run a vile sneering hateful campaign. In the final two weeks, in a theme that hearkens back to Joe McCarthy, the campaign's message has been 'he's a socialist'. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people?

The same yakkers on the bullshit media system would have been happy to catapult the propaganda had McCain decided to go explicitly in that direction.

He deserves no credit whatsoever, only condemnation for the way he has based his campaign on Obama's scary differentness.

What I do know is what kind of ads and speeches I saw and heard, and I know for certain that lots and lots of them -- of McCain's -- were deeply -- if sometimes subtly -- racially tinged. I really don't give a damn what motivated them.

But I suspect you're right: McCain's very possibly not a racist per se. And, I'm guessing that he's not matricidal per se, either. But if his becoming president hinged on whether or not he pushed his mom off a cliff (if he knew he could get away with it), just how much money would you be willing to bet that he wouldn't give Mom the heave-ho in a New Yawk minute?

Obama has run a positive campaign-even his negative ads are on McCain's record, not personal attacks.

I still don't think Rev. Wright is anything to be ashamed of. At our best moments in a generational shift, Rev. Wright demonstrates how our community has moved beyond a lot of the back and forth dialect during the 1960s. At our worst moments, Rev. Wright reminds me of why there are so many Rev. Als, Rev. Jacksons, and Farrakahns inhabiting the black community.

McCain's desire not to play himself by bringing up Wright's views and hoist them upon Obama like they have done with Ayers, does not mean that race ways not used frequently as a short hand for racist sentiment.

We don't know him.
He's never done anything.
What will he do to this country.
He doesn't love America like one of us would.
He's exotic and doesn't know real Americans.

So on and so forth.
