Breaking: Madonna Urges Others to Support Clark
ELIZABETH WOLFE
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Material Girl hopes people pay attention to her latest offstage act: endorsing Wesley Clark for president.

Madonna, who announced her support for the retired general before Christmas, posted a letter Wednesday on her eponymous Web site urging others to follow her.

1. What will she do for ME?
And why the hell should I listen to Madonna in the first place? She's hot, I'll grant her that, but all she is is a celebrity. You can't even call her a musician unless you stretch the definition so far that you include milli vanilli.

63. tell the celebs to shut it
I have to say most people couldn't give a rats ass what celebrity endorses whom. In fact the candidates should ask them to keep it to themselves. In the end the endorsement can work both ways, John Q public hates the endorser and thus trends negatively towards the candidate, or vice versa.

and see the smoking gun thread.

She'll be wanting to ask for her $$ back and finding another candidate to endorse.

46. OOOHHH the smoking gun thread
Is that the one you so powerfully used in your own new thread on the same subject and then provided as your source the first smoking gun thread posted here at DU. Thorough research on your part ;).

I'll state this for you, so as to help you better understand what it is you have read. THERE IS NO SMOKING GUN, ONLY SMOKE.

Now with that, can you please explain the brochure Dean has passed along in NH stating he is the ONLY candidate that was against the war? This brochure took much mind work and dollars to produce. Why would a candidate and his campaign stoop to such all in out LIES? Please address.

14. Madonna has been an AIDS activist for years
also, that bump and grind she did with Sandra Bernhard years back was supposedly in aid of the rainforest.

I think her politics are okay. She, like Michael Moore, is also from Michigan, so maybe she knows him somehow (for that matter, Sandra Bernhard is from Flint, though her family later moved).

11. What's wrong with Madonna making an intelligent choice among candidates?
I'll take any celebrity endorsement...hey, Joan Jett helped to deliver Dr. Dean's filing papers for the N.Y. Primary the other day...don't notice any of our Deaniac DUers ragging on HER!:eyes:

Why is everybody so afraid now that a rational, even-tempered, brilliant man with broad voter appeal might somehow be able to win our Party's nomination? I seem to recall that just about every Democratic presidential candidate who actually WON the election (including in 2000, BTW) was successful in such an appeal. The base isn't enough, folks; not even OUR base!

Also, what a nice thing for Sen. Bradley to do, before his endorsement of Dr. Dean--come out and heap praise upon Gen. Clark's tax plan.:eyes:

B-)

16. Madonna's letter
FWIW, and with grains of salt and what-not. Interesting, though...

I've never done this before. But life is about taking risks is it not?

I know that people seem to pay attention to everything I do. Big or Small. Ridiculous or Sublime. So I am hoping they pay attention to this:

I am supporting General Wesley Clark for President.

Not only as a "celebrity" but as an American citizen and as a mother. I want my children to grow up with the same opportunities that I had – to know and understand what's going on in the world and to travel that world safely and with pride.

Now I'm asking you to join me.

I am writing to you because the future I wish for my children is at risk.

Our greatest risk is not terrorism and it's not Iraq or the "Axis of Evil." Our greatest risk is a lack of leadership, a lack of honesty and a complete lack of consciousness. Unfortunately our current government cannot see the big picture. They think too small. They suffer from the "what's in it for me?" syndrome. The simple truth is that the current administration has squandered incredible opportunities to bring the world together, to promote peace in regions that have only known war, to encourage health in places that are ravaged with disease, to make us more secure by living up to our principles at home and abroad. The simple truth is that the policies of our current administration do not reflect what is great about America.

27. No she's not...
She's a smart, savvy businessperson and I don't think I suggested otherwise. I am, in general though, concerned about celebrity endorsements, because I think we as a culture are unduly impressed with/influenced by celebrity.

Madonna can, of course, support whom she wants and talk about it all she wants. And thank God for that. But I'd rather potential voters do their own research on Clark or any other candidate, instead of deciding that Madonna, or some other star, has done it for them. Am I too cynical? Yeah, maybe. But I wish we were a more informed, concerned and questioning republic than we seem to be at the moment.

>Wes Clark. He will make an exceptional American President.

What makes you so confident? Have you ever had the experience of electing a Democrat and wishing you chose someone else because they dissapoint you? I'm certainly encouraged that he's thrown of his Republican past but his instincts on matters of foreign policy and national security are fairly similar to the Republicans. If you hear him talk on this subject, he sounds like he went through the same school, same bureaucracy, same ideological training. That doesn't wear off in a day.

It is Like a Prayer answered. And it's not only because Clark is in Vogue: she saw the good General, said "I'm Crazy For You."

Like a political virgin, she expressed herself for the very first time with idealism, a sense of the moment, and hope for our great nation. (Common feelings for Clark supporters!)

I hope only to Live to Tell my great-grandchildren about Clark's victory over the GOP in 2004, and how Madonna helped.

Oh, yeah, and "Erotica."

Madonna is capable of deep, intelligent thought.

She also encouraged the public to vote for Bill Clinton back in '92, but didn't approach her endorsement with this much maturity.

66. Madonna
I'm sure Clark will win big among female bisexuals who have had 10+ abortions.

71. The fundraiser she'll be holding should be interesting
If I'm not mistaken, this will be the first time she'll be holding a fundraiser for a political campaign. Regardless of how you might view her, she is one smart cookie and has enough clout to bring attention and money to a Dem Candidate. It's a net positive for Clark, and I hope she continues to be an active Dem fundraiser.

72. Madonna....
Has a website visited by 500,000 per day. She has a link to Clark's website and his contribution screen. Oprah is one of her good friends. I respect Madonna...because I am not a small minded Republican who tends to bash and act like they are superior.
IMO, Madonna's endorsement is ALL GOOD!

Madonna is who turned Bono on to the AIDS fight.

Almost feel like I'm in a RW site....must be the jealousy!

Madonna is a very adept business woman....and associates with winners....unlike some people I know!

Would I rather have Clinton and Madonna in my corner...
or Gore and Bradley???

mmm....mmm....mmm......

76. Nice letter.
Thank You Madonna! She has MILLIONS of fans. This can only be a good thing for Clark. In case you didn't know it, Madonna has changed her image now that she is a mother and wife. She is now an author of a children's book and she has, shall we say, matured. THIS can only be seen as a good thing.

Go, Wes! Thank You Madonna!

That's one endorsement I'd not tout.
