Seems to me that we are simply shifting our attentions, money and soldiers to the area around the Caspian Sea (where we have major pipeline/oil and gas interests among other concerns). As you'll recall, Unocal, was originally slated for a pipeline through Afghanistan region, but it turned out to be too volatile to go forward with it.
