Still, the polls conducted last week hardly offer the final verdict on the conventions. Typically, the postconvention bounce fades over the next two weeks, and aides to Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry said they expected the lead to drop over the next few days.
While even Democrats said Mr. Kerry's challenge was clear in the remaining two months of the race, Mr. Bush's standing is hardly prohibitive. At least four times over the past 50 years - in 1948, 1968, 1976 and 1980 - a candidate who enjoyed a strong lead on Labor Day lost or watched his lead collapse in the final days of the campaign before hanging on to win.The polls were taken before the latest round of news reports casting new light on Mr. Bush's National Guard service in the Vietnam era, suggesting he received preferential treatment and failed to obey an order to get a physical. Mr. Bush's advisers said Thursday that voters would reject these reports as election-year attacks, while Democrats argued that they would provide a damaging contrast between a decorated veteran and a president who, they say, avoided duty in Vietnam.
